yeah i'd never played one but the concept was clear and hilarious

I remember VCR trivia games, like it'd show you a scene from a movie and you'd have to guess the movie or something ("Scene It" I think it was called?). But our VCR was too crappy to take full advantage of something like Pile Of Bullets; the lag time between hitting FFW on the remote and the VCR actually fast-forwarding would've killed all the fun.

Which also serves as a reminder that every single robocop thing except for the original Verhoeven flick has been garbage

my vcr board game story: we used to have atmosfear - http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1881/atmosfear-the-harbingers - when i was growing up. we tried playing it once or twice and then it got tucked into a random vcr box until a few years later when my then ~2yo sister turned it on thinking it was a baby genius movie. she was so frightened that from then on if you asked her if she wanted to watch baby genius she'd say, "no, too scary."

I used to have this one basketball VCR game but it was shitty because unless you picked a random point to start the VHS tape (thus delaying the start of the game), every game always started the same! DVDs kinda brought back this type of thing since it's easier to jump around (ie, SceneIt etc).

and then our friends growing up had us playing a horse race betting game, thus exposing me to gambling at a nice right age.

also did anybody ever play the interactive CAptain Power game shit?

Neanderthal, Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:17 (ten years ago) link

not quite sure what the exemplars were of the genre that the textbook plot was based on, but the musical cues were perfect.

I don't know that it was meant to be anything more than 'hey it's organized crime/drug cartel shit only with textbooks instead'.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:23 (ten years ago) link

was thinking googling "heist gone wrong" would yield some good results but didn't bother.

eric banana (s.clover), Monday, 17 March 2014 00:32 (ten years ago) link

nah i'm struggling to think of other examples than a simple plan but basically the plot involves small group of friends find some loot that's possibly ill gotten, decide to split it up amongst themselves instead of report it or whatever and then eventually greed and paranoia lead them to betray and destroy each other until whatever larger powerful evil force the loot originally belonged to arrives to deliver the final blow. no country for old men has elements of this, treasure of sierra madre as well but there are some that fit it more specifically. basically a variation on monkey's paw.

Not sure if mentioned here but VCR star was the dude who created breaking bad hence drug deal subplot

I'm not really sure why I felt that (probably just the sci-fi association from last week) but something definitely sent a Chris Barrie -shaped shiver down my back. Something about the lameness and intransigence of the characters and being in a confined situation. But it passed pretty quickly.

Like you mentioned, Treasure of the Sierra Madre is probably the best example of this trope. I'm really fond of Shallow Grave with Christopher Eccleston and Ewan McGregor

Don't know why it never occurred to me that Community is basically a sub-par spinoff/reimagination of this,

tsrobodo, Monday, 17 March 2014 17:41 (ten years ago) link

no.

Nhex, Monday, 17 March 2014 17:48 (ten years ago) link

yes.

You've got your inspirational speech making de-facto leader white guy,
Your (budding) firebrand anarchist,
your black sporty guy that hides a nerdy side,
Your rotund, impossibly kind person with a not so hidden dark side,
Your diabolical snitch that wants to be a part of the gang,
Your supporting cast of people defined by singular weird traits,
Your infinitely moldable school environment

I can't be the only one that sees it.

tsrobodo, Monday, 17 March 2014 18:07 (ten years ago) link

So what you're saying is Community is a situation comedy

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Monday, 17 March 2014 19:29 (ten years ago) link

If all situational comedies share the aforementioned tropes, then yes.

tsrobodo, Monday, 17 March 2014 19:58 (ten years ago) link

Or in other words, no.

tsrobodo, Monday, 17 March 2014 19:58 (ten years ago) link

"supporting cast of people defined by singular weird traits"

Jeez why are some people so unnecessarily defensive of this show? I'm not knocking it at all, I was (I thought) clearly trolling when I compared it unfavourably with a Sunday morning Disney cartoon (albeit a very good one). Regardless, the similarities are more than incidental.

Had no idea that The Cosby Show was set in a school.

tsrobodo, Monday, 17 March 2014 20:52 (ten years ago) link

Oh man if you think this thread is bad for being defensive about this show, you better stay away from The A/V Club.

Had no idea that The Cosby Show was set in a school.

A character learned something in every episode. Sounds like a school to me.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 17 March 2014 21:00 (ten years ago) link

wtf? I mean I maintain a pretty loose definition of what trolling is "Being facetious/tongue in cheek" would probably have illustrated that better, but I missed the part where trolling was defined as some kind of internet lifestyle choice that demands dedication and commitment.

A character learned something in every episode. Sounds like a school to me.

good for you.

tsrobodo, Monday, 17 March 2014 21:06 (ten years ago) link

The problem wasn't that you were trolling, it's that you were trolling really, really poorly

and trolling is one of the most pointless things in the world, so you failed at one of the most pointless things in the world. we aren't angry at your trolling. we're angry that we have to pity you.

you are clinically deaf and should sell you iPod (stevie), Tuesday, 18 March 2014 08:00 (ten years ago) link

Oh please, could you be more precious? If trolling is something that requires any amount of effort then the chances are I probably wasn't. It was a quaint observation that occurred to me because Recess had an episode called "The Ratings Game" that played out in a very similar fashion to "App Development and Condiments".

and it's not like I'm the first person to notice this.
http://0.media.collegehumor.cvcdn.com/55/40/917016309d819712fdde60ae88317d96.jpg

Surely failing at one of the most pointless things in the world would be immaterial, yet you feel compelled to pity somebody and on top of that feel angry about it? I ain't the one with a problem here.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 10:38 (ten years ago) link

It is peculiar that two big dude showrunners have cameo'd recently but considering their bits were great and unrelated to their day jobs I can't see holding it against the show.

da croupier, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 14:07 (ten years ago) link

tsrobodo, the only person who seems to be angry here is you. you have a weirdly pass/agg approach to ilxing, maybe its not for you?

As long as its only distracting for the nerdiest of TV nerds I'm fine if next week has David milch as a custodian in a rainbow wig.

da croupier, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 14:11 (ten years ago) link

Funny that the only person that's even intimated at anger here is you. Oh and I'm doing fine, thanks for your concern though.

Harmon's appearance in Arrested Development was obviously symbolising his being cast out from the NBC and Sony families, as he was in the desert. And further, representing the Harmontown documentary, as it showed him having found an ersatz support group/cult that would pay to be abused, and give him a place to do pointless "work".

Charles, hatless (sic), Tuesday, 18 March 2014 14:30 (ten years ago) link

i don't actually think anyone here is really angry or really pitying you, we just don't seem to be responding to your thing about the cartoon show the way you wanted us to? but i mean that's cool - i mean, i'm not american so i have no idea what that cartoon show is. i'm just confused about whether you are trolling or not, and how we should be responding to your trolling? but its really no big deal, and apologies if i seemed like a dick above.
