This show is so abstractly pretty I had no problem eating a roast chicken dinner during the "Ooh he's making angels!" bits (ages ago for you guys prob, I live in NZ)

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Saturday, 15 March 2014 00:16 (ten years ago) link

Was Cynthia Nixon's character aware of the judge's murder beforehand? It looked like she was surprised for a split second that the judge was hung with his heart and brain out on display and then right after went right into chastising Jack for defending Will. She must be used to that sort of display!

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:03 (ten years ago) link

So has anyone noticed the sheer glee they're having in putting Hannibal Lecter's dialogue from the movies in Will's mouth this season? "You want to know how he's choosing them" (from Manhunter), "[Dr. Lecter] doesn't want me dwelling on anything morbid" (from Silence), and I noticed a third one but it's slipped my mind at the moment.

CAROUSEL! CAROUSEL! (Telephone thing), Saturday, 15 March 2014 05:06 (ten years ago) link

Favorite moment: Hannibal entering the courtroom to testify, shot from angles where his face is obscured by the backlight. He really looked like a demon in those shots.

Also, I have no idea who is actually comitting the gun-murders. I mean, I have a theory, as every time I've had doubts on who has killed whom, it's always been Hannibal. But I constantly think 'well, maybe there's something else going on, he seemed so sad when he discussed the case with Will...'

Frederik B, Sunday, 16 March 2014 16:08 (ten years ago) link

it's Hannibal.

man when is someone gonna kill dr. chilton already

j., Monday, 17 March 2014 01:32 (ten years ago) link

I like how they've expanded and shuffled the backstory of the books around but I doubt they're gonna stray from the broad strokes and kill a character like Chilton early.

What an unwieldy sentence

I keep thinking how great it'd be if he died, as well.

No, please don't kill Raul Esparza. Mmm.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Monday, 17 March 2014 03:27 (ten years ago) link

It's difficult, as I really like the character on the show. He's just such an obnoxious presence that you want _something_ bad to happen to him.

have a nice blood (mh), Monday, 17 March 2014 14:04 (ten years ago) link

hee hee, he's already had a serial killer pull his own organs out of him while he consciously, helplessly looks on, and yet i agree it WASN'T ENOUGH.

reddening, Monday, 17 March 2014 17:30 (ten years ago) link

he bounced back from that pretty fast, indicates questionable personality

j., Monday, 17 March 2014 17:34 (ten years ago) link

He's a ridiculous character, he was like a Bond villain sitting in the dock!

The use of the "Della sua pace" aria from Don Giovanni was seriously badass, and one of the only uses of opera in pop culture I've seen that actually pays attention to the libretto. Respect.

Well, that ending was unbearably tense. I'll be needing next week's episode now. Also, that acupuncture scene, oof.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 22 March 2014 03:06 (ten years ago) link

I really, really, really hope Beverly isn't dead.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 22 March 2014 03:10 (ten years ago) link

She's dead and digested.

carl agatha, Saturday, 22 March 2014 03:14 (ten years ago) link

That was super intense, very Silence of the Lambs-esque when Beverly was downstairs with the gun. Poor Will. Poor Bella. Poor Beverly.

carl agatha, Saturday, 22 March 2014 03:17 (ten years ago) link

I can't think of a realistic scenario in which she'd get out alive.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 22 March 2014 03:19 (ten years ago) link

it's Hannibal.

Maybe not.

MV, Saturday, 22 March 2014 03:39 (ten years ago) link

Raul Esparza did excellent work yet again as Chilton in tonight's episode. He brings just the perfect amount of "camp" to the character. I continue to get not people's qualms about him. That said, I do find him to be incredibly hot so maybe that's blinding me to any weaknesses.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 22 March 2014 04:08 (ten years ago) link

personal weird theory: chilton is like the non-comedic realization of Jim Rash's Dean character in Community

anyhoo, back from crazytown:

this Chilton is better than the movie version, maybe even better than the book ever suggested, all those subtle layers of cowardice greed ambition curiosity, he's SO good, i love watching him

Beverlyyyyyy :( :( :(

the scenes with Will recovering his memories, with the strobe lights and Hannibal-melty face, were some deeply unsettling shit. Also, when Hannibal turned his head to address Will. Mads Mikkelsen can be really terrifying just making eye contact.

Roz, Sunday, 23 March 2014 06:20 (ten years ago) link

should we poll how he will cook beverly y/n

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 23 March 2014 06:37 (ten years ago) link

when that Fuller interview was linked above and "spoilers" were mentioned I was all "oh come on the gun doesn't shoot up through the dining room floor if she survived it's obvious no spoilers here lol" but then yeah there are proper fucking spoilers which would make that poll unfair.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Sunday, 23 March 2014 12:30 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, the gun shooting up through the floor really answered what happened. But in a subtle way. This show is in some ways pretty subtle, I've been trying to get some people into it, and they complain about Hannibal not doing anything in the first episodes, and I'm like 'wait, he killed dozens of people in the background?' but they don't really catch it.

Frederik B, Sunday, 23 March 2014 17:27 (ten years ago) link

Abigail a possibility. Also maybe storage for that FBI person who disappeared years earlier?

have a nice blood (mh), Monday, 24 March 2014 14:00 (ten years ago) link

Abigail is ok, she agreed to let Hannibal cut of her ear to help with some complicated plan which will in the end help Will Graham understand himself better. Hannibal knew that Beverly would misunderstand, so he had to attack her to get rid of her gun. After the episode ended he explained everything and they all laughed and had pancakes. In next weeks episode all will be revealed, and they'll all live happily ever after. Including Jack's wife. It's a miracle!

Hettienne Park, who plays Beverly, wrote this incredibly thoughtful blog post about her character and the accusations of racism/sexism that Bryan Fuller is getting for killing off Bev: http://yellowbird66.wordpress.com/2014/03/25/racism-sexism-and-hannibal-eat-the-rude/

well THIS just doesn't sound like it has anything to do with THIS show

Don’t forget this is network television, not cable. In order to sell those advertising dollars and survive, they want to appeal to the masses of Middle America.

finally caught up with this season. i think maybe hannibal was planning a surprise welcome home party for will if he was released, and that's what beverly found?

They followed up an episode which featured the death of a regular with their most darkly funny episode yet (mostly due to Eddie Izzard, probably).

Seeing Beverly like that was xtremely distressing (>_<) I was a bit annoyed with the last act because we know from the first ep that he is not in genuine peril.
