Feeling for you guys right now.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 09:38 (ten years ago) link

very conflicted about the whole thing. will probably have more definite thoughts on this at the end of the season. the following post from our messageboard is probably the summary I prefer for now, with the caveat that I'm unsure whether it's, on principle, a good or bad thing that CAFC is now a subordinate part of a European network - I'm probably quite excited to see how it works, in fact, because any pretence that a professional football club can't be run as a business in 2014 is ludicrous, and this business model is one of many, none of which are particularly 'soulful' - a club obtains its 'soul' from its supporters, its development players, its community participation & its brand of football, rather than its business model, which is the corruptible flesh, the demon eluded through sheer faith

obviously losing Powell was very sad and it genuinely does feel like something special has been sacrificed

anyway, here's the post:

So KentRed tell us what club you want and then tell me how you are going to pay for it.

The Samuels piece is a very well written article. The problem is it complete and utter b******s.

It is the sort of jingoistic clap trap you can normally expect from the Mail but selective in the extreme. Heaven forbid he address the fundamental financial distortion the many overseas investors have brought to the UK game, which has so many medium sized clubs teetering on the brink of financial ruin just trying to compete.

Can't jeopardise his seat at the top table can he?

Rather than attack the UK authorities for allowing such foreign interference in our game, he blames UEFA and picks on us to attack an innovative international model (not uncommon in France & Belgium) and which has the opportunity to bring some financial stability. So don't understand it, so don't like it, lets just stick the knife into this "jonny foreigner". (nothing to do with mate of a mate getting the sack)

All based on BBC editing. I am not sure how familiar you are with the media but the interview was edited in such a way as to produce a good sound bite or headline. It is what they do. I once had the pleasure of watching my father (Regional Director of a Utilities company) being interviewed by the BBC. The broadcast interview was a complete distortion of the facts.

I am just wondering if I have missed something - who did we transfer to Standard Liege? I was under the impression we signed 1 player from SL and had two more on loan, and of course we have a lad on a youth loan. Not quite the 8 or 9 Watford brought in.

Now I am getting on in years and my judgment of players is not what it once was but could someone please enlighten me which of our current squad are of Champions League Standard. Perhaps Mr Samuels could use his crystal ball and put a few names in the frame as to who of our future prospects may be heading to mainland Europe.

Still believe it if you must. For me I will put it alongside our playing in a UEFA competition any time soon.

Does RD have a vision and an outline of the future? Yes but the truth is very simply RD at this point does not yet know how it will all hang together because he needs to assess exactly what he has bought and how it will all fit together.

His focus at this point is trying to understand how he gets the club to be viable financially. I really tire of people trundling out they are not interested in the business. At what point do you not realise if the business fails then the club does not exist? It is akin to buying a house and not worrying whether it has any foundations. At some point the whole thing falls over.

The dismissal of Powell is controversial and yesterday was a very sad day. A good man has lost his job. Ultimately it turned out he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. A good manager, in the right circumstances, I had 3 challenges with CP.

1. His coaching ability - Powell appears a very decent coach but the performances of several individual players left a great deal to be desired - 30% have to all intents and purposes been discarded making absolutely no contribution to the club.

2. His inability to structure a balanced front six to provide any pattern of sustainable attacking play. It is simply not enough to produce a platform to restrict the other side and rely on an individual piece of flair to nick a goal for a win.

It worked very well in L1 and with the purple patch at the end of the first championship season we reached 9th largely due to Obika snatching very late goals. Such results are to be applauded but we were always going to face 2nd season syndrome where other sides just suss you out. He needed to change the game plan.

I recognize the recruitment challenges. In many ways this season was always an accident waiting to happen but you cannot keep rejecting players as not good enough - because after a while you run out of options. Too many players were simply not performing and that is a primary responsibility/ function of a head coach.

Hence we have Cousins on Sunday looking like he had never played before. A midfield of Cousins, Poyet and Jackson with Harriott tucked in on the left offers little balance, very modest passing range, little pace and bugger all open play attacking threat.

3. Would he fit with the Head Coach job description - With loss of the final say in terms of player recruitment - the answer was always likely to be - No.

I respect his view but the head coach model is common and works well in Europe.

It is a sad day and I understand the emotion but any friction between a manager and his board will transfer to the pitch. RD & CP sought to find a compromise but regrettably failed to do so. In many ways our club will be poorer for his departure but we have to move forward.

It is a time for reflection and but also a time for renewal. We face a significant challenge in the coming weeks and can understand some may no longer have the stomach for the fight but
I for one have every intention of giving my full support to those seeking to meet the challenge.

For all those rambling about their Charlton identity, for me it is what I have done for over 50yrs and what I will continue to do.

You cannot interrupt his tea stirring because it is his holy trick (imago), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 14:38 (ten years ago) link

is poyet's kid any good

nakhchivan, Monday, 17 March 2014 00:46 (ten years ago) link

he's potentially the best player we've had since I started watching football and an England starter, but he won't be here next season. no new contract. he'll go to a Premiership team.

remember when you said that DM was the hardest position to play well? poyet jr has nailed it aged 18. always in the right position, splits the CBs in possession, beautiful passing range, crunching tackles that are almost never even close to being fouls, reads the game like a book

he's been MOTM almost every time he's played. seriously incredible. if we stay up it will be mostly his doing.

he makes most championship players look like the artless hacks they are

imago, Monday, 17 March 2014 00:54 (ten years ago) link

that's pretty damn impressive
he got good notices for england juniors but plenty of england under 17 captains end up in league two
england don't produce proper defensive midfielders at all, carrick is the only one they have and dm prospects tend to be athletic and/or combative but tactically inept rodwell is useless positionally and lacks awareness
although i hope he chooses uruguay, perez and arevalo will be finished after the world cup and they need young blood

imago, Monday, 17 March 2014 01:23 (ten years ago) link

we also have jordan cousins, who's much, much more the combative, athletic DM type & a manifestly lesser reader of the game, but he is by no means thuggish & has a fairly good passing range as well

has something of the vieira about him, in fact

imago, Monday, 17 March 2014 01:27 (ten years ago) link

ive not seen liam bridcutt but he gets described as a proper positional dmid and poyets father is introducing him into the sunderland team ahead of the more orthodox, moronic cattermole

nakhchivan, Monday, 17 March 2014 01:35 (ten years ago) link

thought bridcutt was more a playmaker, not that they're mutually exclusive. probably a mark in his favour tbh

imago, Monday, 17 March 2014 01:58 (ten years ago) link

huddersfield have a classy dm in oliver norwood who doesn't rly get in their first team much now with the far more dynamic adam clayton preferred (alongside hogg, once of watford). one for damo suzuki's parrot to unpick

imago, Monday, 17 March 2014 02:00 (ten years ago) link

oh and they also pick lumpen shinhacker keith southern ahead of norwood, which is a sin against football

imago, Monday, 17 March 2014 02:02 (ten years ago) link

Norwood to the bench at the Valley was a one off, he has been a constant starter this season, Hogg is our designated dm. I suspect Norwood will be off to Celtic in the summer, the consensus is that he + Clayton are too similar, him being the more dispensable/inconsistent one. I would keep both but we are in the selling business.

Inmates at Belmarsh are offered access to education, workshops, and 2 gyms (one focusing on Physical Education courses and one for recreational gym), with use of a sports hall and a fitness room. The gym staff also have a partnership with Charlton Athletic F.C. to deliver F.A. accredited coaching courses for prisoners.

Poyet (Diego) is the name on your work-mates’ lips as you discuss transfer rumours at lunch, a player to make your Premier League-obsessed colleagues think of Charlton for a reason other than another Carl Jenkinson mishap. “Hey, what’s that Poyet kid like?”, they’ll ask, “I’ve heard he’s mustard.” He most certainly is.

After every crunching tackle, cross-field ball or composed shimmy under pressure, you have to double take and remind yourself that this kid is just 18.

He’s only just notched 11 professional games yet already he is the most important cog in the Charlton machine. He glows with class, his alice band a halo of footballing nous, holding together the shaggy hair that hides a wise head beneath.

Poyet’s 83 per cent passing accuracy is higher than any other Charlton player to have played in more than five games.

Yet it’s not just with the ball at his feet where the youngster is showing seasoned pros how it’s done. Poyet is averaging a higher number of tackles, headers and interceptions per game than any other midfielder in the Charlton squad.

it'll be sad when Diego Poyet is more famous than Charlton Athletic

Charlton are investigating footage that appears to show a couple having sex on the club's pitch.
The video, that has been shared widely online, shows footage of a man and a woman on the centre spot of a football pitch.
The description on the video claims the incident took place at The Valley, with the pair having broken into the ground at night.
A Charlton spokesperson said the club knew nothing of the incident, adding: "There will be a club investigation."

his spell coincided almost perfectly with my yearly disaffection with attending games

by all accounts he was truly excellent in his five games, but he only played in one win - it was at the nadir of peeters' drudgery and he was mooring a side which lacked direction

perhaps playing alongside jordan cousins revitalised his passion for holding midfieldship

certainly he is looking the part now

ive probably watched six or seven games all season but i have become a devotee of arsenalfantv and the arsenal blokes and m8s are all ere coqlaahn was amaaaaaazin

flamini was like that for a season or two, i think that sort of energetic defensive midfielder is prone to spells of greatness when they can summon the effort, without having the talent to go from season to season like redondo mascherano etc
