Arthur is back tonight!

Murgatroid, Monday, 10 March 2014 21:20 (ten years ago) link

Could be wrong on this, but I do believe that if Arthur wins tonight he will move into sole 3rd place all time for longest Jeopardy streaks, after Ken Jennings at 75 games and Dave Madden at 20. Nobody else is higher than the 10 games Arthur is at now.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 10 March 2014 21:30 (ten years ago) link

too close!

do a lot of people really go for the +$1 bet?

Nhex, Monday, 10 March 2014 23:56 (ten years ago) link

Today's clues seemed harder than usual, but then they ended with one of the easiest Final Jeopardy clues I've seen in ages (I'm assuming that at least most of us on ILX would have gotten it).

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 00:00 (ten years ago) link

Definitely note one of the easiest FJ clues in ages. Earlier in Arthur's run, I remember "Dating from 1973, this 4-letter suffix indicates a person or thing that has become associated with public scandal". Now that's an easy FJ. I can't imagine anybody who is able to qualify for Jeopardy missing that.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Tuesday, 11 March 2014 00:19 (ten years ago) link

erg, definitely NOT

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Tuesday, 11 March 2014 00:19 (ten years ago) link

Fine, second easiest. Or maybe I'm just overestimating the answer's popularity (come on, people who qualify to get on this show must know who he is, at least).

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 01:00 (ten years ago) link

Chu never does well on the music questions. One clue was "J.D. _____ co-wrote 'Best of My Love,' 'Victim of Love,' and 'Heartache Tonight.'" Chu guessed Salinger.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 11 March 2014 14:29 (ten years ago) link

And last night he guessed Franny and Zooey for a question about Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury (I think it was).

Not knowing anything about the Eagles is an admirable plus in my book.

Just found out another Clevelander, this one someone I know, is going to be on the Mar. 24 episode.

lol I couldn't ID those titles as Eagles songs much less name an Eagle aside from Don Henley

But would you assume "Heartache Tonight" was a Salinger short story?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 11 March 2014 21:03 (ten years ago) link

should've guessed "(The Other) J.D."

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 21:43 (ten years ago) link

Terrified of missing the episode when someone beats Arthur.

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 23:24 (ten years ago) link

he mentioned something about "flying back out" i think on twitter yesterday which leads me to believe he's safe for this week of shows, but maybe i read into that incorrectly

If he'd guessed "J. D. Other" Alex may have given it to him!

He analyzes his strategies or offers truisms that can sound like Zen koans: “Jeopardy isn’t really a good demonstration of anything but how good you are at playing Jeopardy.”

zen koans, new yorker? really?

j., Wednesday, 12 March 2014 00:14 (ten years ago) link

Guy born in Albany, New York surely knows a thing or two about Zen Buddhism

Tbh that sounds like something iatee would say

, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 00:25 (ten years ago) link

it sounds more like something college quizbowl players say, because they do say it, about playing quizbowl.

of course everyone knows the best teams are wicked smaht but it's still what is said.

j., Wednesday, 12 March 2014 00:30 (ten years ago) link

Yeah - people also say the same thing about standardized testing

, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 00:33 (ten years ago) link

that Frances "McDarmand" thing was a bit nitpicky

still, pretty intense comeback today - he did terribly in the first round, then more or less ran the board and destroyed everyone in Double Jeopardy. looked a little rattled by the end, as he didn't bet to tie, but safely way above

Nhex, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 01:55 (ten years ago) link

I dunno; I think because it's difficult to talk about(or measure) intelligence, we just go by proxy. For example, having taking some training in test prep, I can fairly assure anybody that standardized testing has jackshit to do with measuring ability or intelligence and entirely everything to do with how you take standardized test.

Nicholas Lemann wrote a book about it, called _The Big Test: The Secret History of the American Meritocracy_, that I really need to read.

Also, mistaking trivia for knowledge or intelligence, for that matter.

i am doing dances in the house when he nails the daily double
seriously seriously want this guy to win forever

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 02:24 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I agree with that - I meant that "the only thing that doing well on a standardized test measures is how well you do on standardized tests" is a pretty common thing to hear about standardized tests xp

Totally. I got the sense that Alex felt the need to re-assert his authority over the proceedings. "This is still my show, motherfucker."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 03:15 (ten years ago) link

The McDormand thing didn't bother me; Chu definitely said "McDarmand." But not allowing "Gerry" with a soft "g," that was total bullshit; if someone had only seen the name in print, how would they know otherwise?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 03:19 (ten years ago) link

They let that one contestant say "Ham" instead of "Haim" and gave her the points, this is bullshit

TBF she said "Hay-m"

Isn't Trebek supposed to defer to the judges on these things anyway? Why the fuck is he being all "Well, that's not what I heard you say"?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 03:25 (ten years ago) link

cos he's a punk

Andrew Rose Gregory ‏@arosegregory 49m

@arthur_affect so how long did it take judges to rule on mcdormond/mcdormand? Now that months have passed, do you agree with their ruling?

Arthur Chu ‏@arthur_affect 34m

@arosegregory It took like ten nerve racking minutes. Now that months have passed, I still want the ten grand

Nhex, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 03:34 (ten years ago) link

OK, good to know. I thought Trebek was going rogue.

i was hella tickled when he straight up gave the wrong answer on the macbeth clue but cloaked it in such a way that it seemed as if alex really was gonna look like a massive dick if he wouldn't accept "what is 'the scottish play'/'macbeth'; it's bad luck to say it"
