1) The Avalanches - El Producto, BT - This Binary Universe, Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero

2) What is rockism?
Rockism is the very definition of rock - the distilled essence, including the blood sweat and tears - made up by some nerdy guy trying to explain an artistic movement. Modern authentic rockism can be found but are quite rare these days, perhaps it was once easier to be inspired, original and raw.

4) Unfortunately I have no idea - however I am willing to find out given time. (dont feel like ripping some txt i have no idea about).

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you in the past week

Bleach - Nirvana;
From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah - Nirvana;
Nirvana (2002) - Nirvana (I just got their discography last weekend)

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
Rockism, much like literature's archetypal (or 'new' as it is also known) is the analysis and judgement of a piece of music by its parts. Rockism's states, mainly, that there was, at some point in time, a golden age of music. Music's golden age, the ideals of rockism state, was the era in which all songs were written by performers, where all bands had the same make-up (namely a guitar player, a bass-ist and a drummer), and where a song's appeal to the masses made no difference to a record company; music was best, a rockist would argue, when performers focused on producing albums with meaning, and not on hitting #1 with a great single. One who has lived through (or at least listened to) the music of the 50's and 60's might readily point out that the rockist 'paradise' never truly existed; in this sense rockism strives for an unseen and unachievable ideal. The critics of rockism state that a rockist listener loses sight of a song, as a whole, by focusing on its production, and the motives behind the music. (Funnily, rockism doesn't have too many proponents, as its original use and its current connotations were and still are derogatory.) Rockism is not without merit: when computers and teams of recording company 'technicians' can create chart-toppers, the honest garage band has no hope of becoming mainstream. In conclusion, though, rockism is nothing but an idea of a past time. Rock no longer makes the world turn, and 'rockists' are the music lovers who fail to see the new world order. Rockism and its practitioners are audiophiles who cannot let go of the past. Rockists would do better to cherish their heritage than to look down on the current generation of musicians.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
Sufjan Stevens.
I'd yet to hear a decent sounding popular song in 5/4 (but that might have been due to my musical immaturity) until 'Come on Feel the Illinoise'. I like the musicality of their music (which points to another shortcoming of rockism: musicians come in all sorts of packages and flavors). I'm not quite sure what instrumentation they use, but it seems as if there's brass in some of their songs, a fact that I find quite cool - I'm in my school's drumline. To better respond to this question I listened to a few Stevens songs, and, after having finished listening to them, I think that the variety in their music is remarkable: I can't think of another band with such a wide range of sounds (maybe ozomatli ? ). Deerhoof reminded me of Ladytron, a bit. I think they doesn't appeal to my tastes, the vocals Deerhoof uses; the music that they play is soothing (when it ought to be) and their use of contrast keeps their music interesting.

5) How many invites do you require?

Tobb3, this is not a prank, it's just that we paid these programmers in the UK to recode our invite request system. We're out a little over $1,000 for the project and now functionality is worse than it was before. Don't worry, we're still fighting it out with them. Please be patient for your acceptance e-mail.

In other news, some of my print writing for Wired just went up onto their online archive.

1) Bright Eyes - Cassadaga
The Chemical Brothers - Live At The Social Volume 1
Hot Chip - The Warning

2) Rockism is an ideology used to classify and authenticate musical artists on a scale of how rockerish they are. With the evolution of music and blending of styles, there is no longer a need to classify artists as belonging to one genre. Therefore such artists as K-Os, Black Eyed Peas, Postal Service & The Klaxons cross multiple genres and therefore the idea that these artists could be held to one genre is insane. There should be a new term called Awesomism, there by fans and critics can just decide whether a band or artist is Awesome or not. There no longer is a need to classify musical artists in categories, because the musical community has evolved since '70s or early '80s, which was when the term was created. We are supposed to listen and judge by our own criteria, not other's. How silly would it be to have an R&Bism or Drum'n'Bassism? I will never be a judge of someone's level of rockism.

3) http://static.last.fm/proposedimages/original/6/1006427/27489.jpg

4) Depends on my mood... If I'm lounging around my house on a Sunday, I'm all for Surfjan Stevens 8/10 times, but if I'm ready to roll out on a Friday night it's usually Deerhoof... I don't see why I'd have to choose which is better... which would I rather listen to? which would I rather see perform right now? which would win in a fight? (Deerhoof haha) or which would I stalk? haha those would seem to be better questions to ask...

5) I'd only require 1 invite for myself, because I'm quite certain I would share enough to be granted invites...

Thanks

90 degrees is a bummer, crabcigar. Heat makes me sweat and feel icky, which is no fun at all. So what else is going on in your life? Me, I'm just trying to keep things fresh and interesting, you know?

fresh and interesting? like bread? a fresh loaf of bread. with condiments and lettuce and meats and such, and occasionally a squid tentacle to make things interesting. the sandwich itself wouldn't be so fresh after a few days. so, i think i will fix myself a sandwich after i post this. thank you for the indirect suggestion!

as for what's going on in my life, i have spring vacation for a week. whoo!

I don't know, how to explain. Everyone can read it in Wikipedia, but my english knowledge would not satisfy you guys...

3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power
Well i don't like Cat Power at all... so no fav. picture!

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
Well i'd prefer Sufjan Stevens of course. His music clearly comes with more harmony and the vocal and instrumental parts are better composed together. Another thing i really enjoyed was the funny 5cd Christmas Collection by Sufjan Stevens. Oh dudes my English is to bad, i hope one can at least understand some of my sentences and how they where ment.

Admin, I'm not sure what I enjoyed better: a tentacle suggestively placed inside a young woman's mouth or a burly Chad Kroeger with a microphone placed suggestively by his mouth.

As for Spring Break plans, my parents decided to take me fishing and boating in beautiful Lake Tahoe. :)

2) Rockism is a method for pasty white old unadventurous disinterested pathetic men to raise their crap pop music over everyone else's. These people are also known as the bastard children of Lester Bangs. Anyone concerned with authenticity over the actual music should check their ego and pick up a Justin Timberlake album immediately (don't lie - everyone is already out of the closet about "My Love." It's okay to admit it). As much as the "authentic" rock music has it's place, so does experimentation and collaboration. If you took that aspect out of music you'd have nothing except the Arctic Monkeys, and I think we can all agree that it is time for them to go away. Seriously.

For more information see also Rolling Stone magazine and/or Greil Marcus.

4) Deerhoof is much better than Sufjan. I mean, Sufjan may have Casimir Pulaski Day, but how can you beat the bass groove on Believe E.S.P. You just can't. And Songs for Christmas?? Okay, the sensitive cutesy Christian thing was cool and different at first but once you record a Christmas Album you might as well be Wings. And besides, if Satomi Matsuzaki were a man and Sufjan were a dog... Well I think we'd all know what would happen then. So Deerhoof clearly comes out on top.

1) Clouds - Legendary Demo [320 kbps], MGR - Nova Lux [192kbps], Mare - Mare [256kbps]

2) Rockism, to my understanding, is basically when one's opinion clashes with another's concerning a form of popular music. What I mean by this is one not understanding what exactly it is that makes it appeal to the listeners. One disagreeing with the way that a specific music sounds completely because of a certain element, such as synthesizers or the style of vocals, that is present in the music is another way of looking at it. An example would be myself disliking the majority of the popular music that is played on the radio today for it's lack of talent, and mainly - originality!
What rockism is really about is making good music. Popular artists who used to be highly creative and original are becoming more and more the same not only in sound, but in appearance. It's as if what really made an artist original is being thrown away (or sold..) just to fit in and be able to compete with the gimmick bands that are everywhere today. If we could just get back to the music and what it is that makes music GOOD rather than what their image is, what record label they're signed to, or who's in the band, then perhaps music could go back to being genuinely good.

3) http://panther1.last.fm/proposedimages/original/6/1006427/438848.jpg

4) I would definitely have to say Sufjan Stevens. Mainly because I really haven't heard much Deerhoof. But regardless, Sufjan Stevens is a great artist and one of my favorites. Sufjan Stevens is one of those artists that's just so refreshing because of the fact that there's no other music that is quite like it. Not only is Sufjan Stevens an amazing song writer, but also a great musician. I love the fact that he actually plays a variety of instruments that are heard on his albums. Lastly, I really enjoy the blending of all the different styles in his music. Drawing influence from jazz, folk, and indie, he does an amazing job of creating his own unique sound that is unlike any other.

2) Rockism is a the idea that not all popular rock music is Authentic to it's genre. Some people believe that after the discovery of rock and roll many have veered away from rock's roots. Rockism direct criticism towards any band that uses synthesized instruments. Rockism looks down upon any use of non-authentic sounds used in rock sounds. Most people who believe in Rockism like only the original band set up of a rhythm guitar/vocalist a lead guitarist a bass player and a drummer. They also think that at one time rock was perfected, and that one should stay on their course and not verge from it at all. Rockism thinks that instead of there being many definitions of rock that there is only one true elite sound. Kind of like how the Nazi's believed in an Aryan Race.

They are both different styles though and it's kinda hard to compare, but eventhough Milk-man was really good, I'm gonna have to go with Sufjan.
