If that other guy hadn't tried to bet "cleverly"..

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 1 March 2014 00:57 (ten years ago) link

By how much did Ken Jennings lose when he was defeated?

Murgatroid, Saturday, 1 March 2014 01:11 (ten years ago) link

I felt like the other dude was betting to make sure chu kept playing!
I am loving this run

Arthur Chu @arthur_affect

Fun fact: @semretlemma told me after tonight's game "You thought you were doing me a favor by betting to tie but you ruined my life"

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 1 March 2014 06:48 (ten years ago) link

What a villain

, Saturday, 1 March 2014 06:48 (ten years ago) link

without knowing what the taping schedule was like, semret's bet was perfectly defensible if he doesn't know that arthur bets to tie so frequently. arthur betting to tie against a contestant as good as semret, however, is kinda crazy

also one of the easiest FJs in awhile - it was extremely possible to predict the answer just based on category alone. how many other modern-day suffixes are there, even?

here semret confirms: he'd only seen the last four runaways, he had no idea about the bet to tie thing

the portentous pepper (govern yourself accordingly), Saturday, 1 March 2014 10:24 (ten years ago) link

kinda sucks as a viewer that he keeps getting interrupted by these stunt tournaments

johnny crunch, Saturday, 1 March 2014 16:44 (ten years ago) link

Do Jeopardy fans archive episodes or make comps of greatest moments or anything? I've been totally out of the habit of the show for a few years now and am kicking myself for not following Chu's streak. Based on the recent posts it sounds like it's made for great TV (despite the early commentators taking the opposite stance).

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 1 March 2014 20:17 (ten years ago) link

Agree xp.

Last night was actually kind of intense! Started the second round horribly.

Spottie, Saturday, 1 March 2014 20:47 (ten years ago) link

It'll be interesting to see how/if challengers in two weeks try to use his strategy against him.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 1 March 2014 20:58 (ten years ago) link

we should really get arthur chu to post on ILX. guy is pretty brilliant, and a talented cultural observer. i feel like he'd have a lot to add here.

espring (amateurist), Saturday, 1 March 2014 21:06 (ten years ago) link

yeah, seeing Arthur climb back both from his -$1000 answer in the first round and his poor performance in round 2 was pretty great

well, i hear he's pretty active on twitter, somebody point him in this direction lol

Nhex, Saturday, 1 March 2014 21:11 (ten years ago) link

maybe he's already here

Taking Devil's Tower (by mashed potatoes) (WilliamC), Saturday, 1 March 2014 21:18 (ten years ago) link

it's weird to me that there's this public figure who has made CNN reports who sounds like nabisco/nitsuh in interviews.

Oh awesome, I'm stuck in the airport for at least another hour. This should greatly help.

President Frankenstein (kingfish), Saturday, 1 March 2014 23:40 (ten years ago) link

Haven't watched this show in forever, but damn, you better have a strategy to dominate, because those questions weren't that bad.

For a professed AV Club nerd I'm surprised he didn't get Harry Dean Stanton.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 1 March 2014 23:43 (ten years ago) link

Wow, he really is playing against Alex and the show and not the other contestants, isn't he

President Frankenstein (kingfish), Sunday, 2 March 2014 00:27 (ten years ago) link

what a fuckin boss

j., Sunday, 2 March 2014 00:59 (ten years ago) link

Nhex, Sunday, 2 March 2014 01:08 (ten years ago) link

video clues are the worst tho

also i miss the beep beep boop boop bwoeoop

j., Sunday, 2 March 2014 01:10 (ten years ago) link

lol did i just see a jeopardy contestant answer a question about doms and subs, i did, it is truly a new world

j., Sunday, 2 March 2014 01:12 (ten years ago) link

instead of giving chu shit for his audible clicking why don't they just make their clickers less squeaky, can they not afford that

i was once on a public access movie trivia show where the reward was 3 DVDs i feel like i understand him on a deeper level

hes p funny on twitter too

Wow so a reporter from Cleveland Magazine is going to come to my house and watch me live-tweet @Jeopardy tonight #ThugLife

Arthur Chu ‏@arthur_affect Feb 26

Anyway Alex says that he 1) does not hate me and 2) thinks I'm a "very good player"

j., Sunday, 2 March 2014 02:11 (ten years ago) link

hahaha

balls, Sunday, 2 March 2014 02:19 (ten years ago) link

Wow wow wow, that was fun to watch. I do get that the category-jumping is slightly bewildering; it demands that you really watch the show, you can't tune in and out at all. But mannnnn I love seeing somebody just clobber a game. When he made and won the utterly casual $10,000 bet I went "holy fuck" out loud.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 2 March 2014 06:09 (ten years ago) link

amazed there aren't at least more people starting at the highest value, just to make sure the round doesn't end with 1000s and 800s left on the board

All the dude's appearances are on YT. Just search the show + yyyy + mmm + dd

President Frankenstein (kingfish), Sunday, 2 March 2014 10:04 (ten years ago) link

First appearance is interesting. He never dominates, and wins primarily because his opponents made huge bets in Final (and were wrong).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww0gQz8wXKE

wow the first five minutes are pretty brutal for him

k3vin k., Sunday, 2 March 2014 15:12 (ten years ago) link

maybe just the first 3 mins haha

k3vin k., Sunday, 2 March 2014 15:14 (ten years ago) link

Wow, totally forgot Ken Jennings won 75 games! The next in line after him won 19.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 2 March 2014 16:26 (ten years ago) link

I wonder how Alex Trebek would do as a contestant?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 2 March 2014 16:41 (ten years ago) link

THat girl cut off Alex mid-sentence. What a scumbag. What a VILLAIN

, Sunday, 2 March 2014 23:31 (ten years ago) link

ppl should cut alex trebek more often, with knives if they have em, what a dickhead

rhyme heals all goons (m bison), Sunday, 2 March 2014 23:32 (ten years ago) link

I want to give arthur a hipster makeover

Get him some moscot frames, skinny tie, dog print shirt :))))

, Sunday, 2 March 2014 23:36 (ten years ago) link

Wow Semret. Ease off on the buzzer there

Dawn you're jumping categories & not going in order. Making it Hard for Alex... and all the viewers playing along at home!!!!!!

, Sunday, 2 March 2014 23:40 (ten years ago) link

what are Alex Trebeck's favorite foods?

del griffith, Sunday, 2 March 2014 23:43 (ten years ago) link

I wonder how Alex Trebek would do as a contestant?

I think he'd get steamrolled.

Taking Devil's Tower (by mashed potatoes) (WilliamC), Sunday, 2 March 2014 23:48 (ten years ago) link

how much repetition has there been in Jeopardy questions over the years? zero? a bit? what % of questions in an episode would he have heard before as host? not that he'd necessarily know or remember, i just wonder.

MISTERSNRUB (some dude), Monday, 3 March 2014 00:00 (ten years ago) link

7% of all questions are about the Etruscans

del griffith, Monday, 3 March 2014 00:08 (ten years ago) link

I think Alex would do pretty well as a contestant
