I got an email a couple of days ago about Gameday Audio autorenewing, but I haven't checked my transactions at the cc site.

there is a rumor out there that "for the first time ever MLB.tv is included with your Extra Innings purchase." it more than a rumor but not confirmed as of yet for DirecTV, is confirmed for FIOS.

so i just got off the phone with DirecTV and they are going to give it to me for $10 off per month, making it $137.94 for this year.

they also gave me an additional $10 off per month for 12 months and turned on HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Encore, Showtime, the Movie Channel and Sports Pack for free for two months with automatic drop off.

i'm a very happy customer right now.

According to an Associated Press interview with MLBAM chief executive Bob Bowman, (the MLB.tv blackout policy) may soon change:

"Everyone's trying to solve it," Bowman said. "If our hands were 4 feet apart three or four years ago, they are now 6 inches apart," Bowman said. "We're moving in the right way. We continue to talk. The dialogue is professional."

You are all set to enjoy another exciting year of MLB EXTRA INNINGS. We will be renewing you at 6 payments of $32.99/month.

same price as last year.

and again same price.

just got off the phone with DirecTV, they gave me $180 in credits, so it cost me $17.94 for 2015. i usually only get $60 off.

With ESPN acknowledging that at some point in the future, but not for at least five years, that they might need to offer their programming a la carte, there is an understanding that the current bundling system will not last forever. While only a portion of cable subscribers are sports fans, cable companies continue to negotiate deals that put networks like ESPN on the standard cable tier with high per-subscriber fees, perhaps worried about erosion from its overall base of customers who might not get cable without sports. MLB has the ability to provide it’s product directly to consumers with MLB.tv, it is aware of a potential shift, and it is open to in-market streaming of games, a potential godsend to those currently blacked out of watching many of the games they wish to see.

Given the rate viewers are debundling, I've got to imagine MLB drops the local blackouts pretty soon

Back around Feb/March, I would have given it better than even odds of happening this year.

rack of lamb of god (WilliamC), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 14:50 (four years ago) link

Yeah seems like the rhetoric has been foreshadowing it for a while. Also if MLB is worried about attracting/retaining young viewers, this is the way to do it

mlb is taking over the nhl's streaming service as well

Teams w/ locally held Fox rights may break the streaming impasse

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 August 2015 15:07 (four years ago) link

Arg, if I'm reading this right, this only secures the rights for Fox to stream local games through it's own service. So ppl without a cable subscription are still out of luck; these games wouldn't stream through MLB

Evan R, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 15:26 (four years ago) link

yes, name change to Fox League Baseball is imminent

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 August 2015 15:28 (four years ago) link

I mean, if Fox sells this as a stand-alone service I will be thrilled; I would pay for a separate streaming service. But otherwise I don't see how this increases baseball's audience much

DirecTV cost for Extra Innings 2017 = $172.74

i got $10 off for 12 months or $120. if i signed up for auto pay (pick the date on your credit card on file) they would give me an extra $5 off for 12 months or $60. $120 + $60 = 180 in total discounts. MLB Extra Innings nis basically free again this year.

oh, they also threw in HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and Sportspack for free with auto drop off for six months. i win.

i just called for my annual discount on DirecTV. i was seriously thinking about going with the MLB single team option this year. they couldn't offer me anything off MLB but they instead gave me $50 off per month for 12 months with a 12 month contract. i'm here for six months because of baseball so an extra six months for $50 off works for me. i then asked for the sports pack for per and post game shows in addition to that new Grant Brisbee added SF Giants show called Giants Insider. they gave it to me for free for six months. win-win, so happy right now.

I spoke too soon -- the email says "A refund request has been submitted on your behalf. If approved, please be advised it normally takes banks 5-7 business days to release these funds." So it's a maybe, not a certainty.

it'd be nice if they let us stream last year's games for free.
