Rendition Verite! damn i still remember

Nhex, Thursday, 27 February 2014 03:07 (ten years ago) link

I played a lot of the original Quake (and some awesome LAN parties for Q3 Arena) but never liked it as much as DooM. I think the color scheme and darkness of the whole thing turned me off. It's so muddy and brown it makes Doom II look like a Lisa Frank game.

But I was always glad I got it because it came on a CD that included Doom, Doom II, Wolfenstein 3D, etc. and that was one of the best gaming deals ever!

played a bunch of quake i because of this thread (using the "quakespasm" engine on ubuntu and data files legitimately obtained from a totally vintage and manual-accompanied quake cd i bought at everyday music in portland or for 95c and on which even the fred meyer sale sticker i dread removing looks 90s) and now i regret mentioning half-life upthread because i'd forgotten the speed of this game, there is nothing like it except stuff that is explicitly trying to be like it (like serious sam or UT or lol daikatana). iirc duke nukem 3d moves at something close to this pace but something makes just moving through it feel less visceral and hurtling--maybe the fact that it's sprites on a grid instead of a "real" 3d environment; maybe just because of the way quake SWINGS you from left to right when you strafe, like yr in a hydraulic chair at an arcade.

it is indeed pretty much the origin of Shooter Brown in all its shades, much less colorful than doom; and i didn't mod it with any new textures but i did turn the screen resolution all the way up to the present day, so it looks rly splotchy, but i still like the monster designs and the ominous skies. the chainsaw/grenade-launcher-wielding ogre is a stoner metal kid image for the ages. what's really hideous is the weapons: an assortment of malformed grey dongs. but i love them mechanically; there are so few of them but (pace the manual, which claimed that as soon as i picked up the double shotgun i'd stop using the only gun in the game that can snipe) none of them ever stop having a use. and the game's so stingy with the nails that just using a burst feels like some kind of treat.

fuck a shambler obviously but fuck even more those upgraded knights that start appearing in episode 2, the ones that shoot fireballs, because on nightmare difficulty they come at you in hordes.

Otm about the speed. Even on my 1998 hardware, quake 2 was one quick game.

ten months pass...

Playing E1M1 of Quake on a Hitachi V-422 oscilloscope.

The rendering is done a laptop and the scope shows the generated audio signal as two dimensional vector graphics.

been playing a lot of quake 3 in the middle of the night. was an unreal tournament partisan for years and poss still am but have come in my old age to appreciate simplicity. q3 is the platonic deathmatch experience even if that's all it does: carmack, alone at last, an obsessive ascetic. abstract fps physics; environments that could only exist as fps levels, are trying to be nothing else. real, evil cyberspace. (btw i tend to have a much lower ping to q3 servers than to ut or ut04 servers; gonna go ahead and attribute this to carmack too.) i don't know who the people are that i'm playing with--how old they are. i can't imagine there's a lot of 13-year-old boys playing quake 3 in 2015, and yet the conversation is just like i remember.

calstars sorry idk if yr still looking but here's a list of modern q1 engines (of variable faithfulness to the original) that just need a few (copyrighted) data files from the CD to run. hit me up if you want, or also they can be found in the uh usual places.

q3 was awesome.

Yeah Quake 3 probably my favorite multiplayer shooter. Fond memories of LAN parties w Q3.

on sale on steam this weekend btw, cuz of quakecon, but still a lil pricey (at $13) because of its reputation and because they make you buy team arena too, which prob isn't rly necessary. (like q1 my copy was a record store used bin buy, for something like fifty cents.)

i basically can't beat anyone online tho. i'd like to blame my ping (it runs a lil high here on the imperial fringe) but sometimes i see people with identical limitations doing a lot better (tho i never see them win). suspect the player base has boiled down to the elite.

it's the curse of all long-running competitive games

two years pass...

Playing a lot of the various old-school Doom games on PS3 lately, which are super great but also making me miss Quake so hard (I somehow missed out on the Dooms back in my Quake/Duke Nukem days). And now I'm listening to SAWII and recalling fondly that this was my go-to soundtrack for Quake sessions. So perfectly ethereal and creepy. I don't know that I ever even listened to the Reznor score, tbh.

I thought about that score not too long ago -- I am not sure if he's gotten to it yet, but it's set to be released on vinyl. Because it's 2018 and that's how we reissue stuff, I guess.

Obviously the best way is to put the CD in and immediately skip track one (data track)

level design in this game is totally wicked, especially when u r jumping through zero gravity tubes or some shit

it might be a challop but i like the water levels (THE GRISLY GROTTO etc.). adds, uh, depth

difficult listening hour, Saturday, 6 March 2021 02:15 (three years ago) link

I was watching some playthru videos a little while back and realized that I had never even heard Reznor's soundtrack before. SAWII was always the default disc I popped into the PC and it worked beautifully.
