is "givin' it up" about an abortion?!

lex pretend, Thursday, 20 February 2014 21:39 (ten years ago) link

i think "nirvana" is the good sam smith solo song but i could be mistaken

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 20 February 2014 21:55 (ten years ago) link

after watching the brit awards tho i don't see how he's materially different than john newman or tom odell aside from having an early disclosure cosign which gives him the veneer of being more cool than those dudes

but aesthetically it's the same shit

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 20 February 2014 21:57 (ten years ago) link

another one for the 'electro/fidget dudes gone deep house & bass' file - Friend Within is Lee Mortimer!

have enjoyed most of FW stuff so far but all of it pales next to the "Jubel" remix, just way gorgeous

Mind Taker, Thursday, 20 February 2014 23:52 (ten years ago) link

"i got u" is more tensnake than talabot to me, despite the steel pan sound

it's amazing tho. for some reason i only expected duke dumont to make one special track but he's backing "need u" up really well

lex pretend, Friday, 21 February 2014 10:41 (ten years ago) link

you know there's a tensnake mix right?

He had at least one special track before Need U, because 'The Giver' is and has always been great.

John Newman has had that veneer as well, it's pretty much how the industry breaks its fast-tracked MOR singers these days. I'm not expecting much from Ella Eyre's solo career either.

The idea of Tom Odell on one of these is pretty lol though, although Black Butter have someone lurking within their stable who is almost as insipid, I forget the name.

Matt DC, Friday, 21 February 2014 11:18 (ten years ago) link

yeah cosigns from dance types don't mean much, sandé was the template and it's used for everyone now. sadly the featured singers who stick with house when they go solo, like sinead harnett, haven't made anything like the impression of your newmans, smiths etc

lex pretend, Friday, 21 February 2014 11:22 (ten years ago) link

I csn't think of a Sam Smith-fronted track that I like at all actually, even the Discloure track he features on is limp.

Matt DC, Friday, 21 February 2014 13:45 (ten years ago) link

strongly disagree w/that, latch is all-time imo

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 21 February 2014 19:00 (ten years ago) link

also sam smith's got pipes that newman wd kill for, ditto the loathesome tom odell, if tom odell even knew what good singing was, which i haven't seen the evidence of

i dunno, it's hard for me to hate on newman or smith, they're so young, and they're just singers trying to break big, they've got plenty of time to become a bit more thoughtful about what they want to accomplish

odell on the other hand

Naughty Boy ft. Sam Star - La La La (Deckstar Bass Mix) is the one.

also ft. Sam Smith.

Tim F, Friday, 21 February 2014 21:19 (ten years ago) link

that's how he should be billed on everything

digging "i got u" but it's totally calling for an 8 minute edit

this should be the 2014 gui boratto "beautiful"

^ chuffed his proper debut single is this good, is it getting much radio play?

Benny B, Thursday, 27 February 2014 09:43 (ten years ago) link

getting quite excited about how strong black butters albums game could be this year. MNEK, clean Bandit and quite possibly Kidnap Kid, Lulu James and Scrufizzer (and maybe Gorgon City?). they must be raking it in at the moment so it would be great to see all of thewse get a proper push.

Benny B, Thursday, 27 February 2014 09:50 (ten years ago) link

wow @ the shift k3y tune

Tim F, Thursday, 27 February 2014 12:26 (ten years ago) link

i didn't know shift k3y sang or could sing!

lex pretend, Thursday, 27 February 2014 13:04 (ten years ago) link

his debut tunes upthread were him singing

kinda understood the shift in k3y to falsetto with this and 'make it good' as a little jt/thicke kinda play (although the delight of 'touch' imo is how it's more like a jordan knight vibe) (cf what i mentioned on the katy b thread actually)

v curious/baffled as to why his marketing so far is p much that of faceless dance producer with logo when even the mutest dweebs get fullblown photo ops now

r|t|c, Thursday, 27 February 2014 15:27 (ten years ago) link

shoutout to that shift k3y song, yes

noting your mnek shade though

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:46 (ten years ago) link

heh no i am reasonably up for the mnek to be clear

r|t|c, Friday, 28 February 2014 00:59 (ten years ago) link

(should also have mentioned for the bubblers btw - how magnificent is chris lorenzo's sorrowing vampireballad rework now that we know what the original 'touch' sounds like)

r|t|c, Friday, 28 February 2014 01:04 (ten years ago) link

"touch" has a video now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KtYYHKEGDc

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 6 March 2014 17:34 (ten years ago) link

i'm calling this the post-disclosure blue eyed garage revival's "nice & slow"

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 6 March 2014 17:34 (ten years ago) link

hah this is why i specifically singled u out for that tune (might personally qualify it with the 'nice & slow' bass mix or really anything from the fin de siecle florida boy bands but yeah)

(had been kinda dying to ask the ilx homo thug crew what they made of him now he's finally been revealed (and renovated) actually... he seems imo unexpectedly sorta inherently scowly like an fred perry-jocking arctic monkey type bro, crossed with uh erm idk... rick astley)

he's got jams aplenty and - to a near absurd degree - every possible string to a bow going, but still i'm uncertain if they can really truly make a star out of him

r|t|c, Thursday, 6 March 2014 19:22 (ten years ago) link

yeah he's cute in a specifically british grungey way

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 6 March 2014 19:28 (ten years ago) link

it's funny you mention rick astley tho cuz i realized you can pretty much sing the chorus of "never gonna give you up" to the tune of "touch" and it fits in the meter

silently rebuking myself for posting this here and not the r&b thread (where i would likely have posted a stream only and falsely and wildly claimed it was lloyd produced by los or something) but whatever, the boogie matrix itt is probs more valid and valuable anyway. most agreeable jam, dude seems to have an x-factor the other pmr'nb hope javeon mccarthy doesnt (despite the latter's talent)

heh yeah thought this might be the case

feel i deserve some sort of special medal for taking my mind off the girl in that vid long enough to make any judgement on him tbh

r|t|c, Thursday, 6 March 2014 19:37 (ten years ago) link

i went looking for a bass remix of "nice & slow" and i found this random thing on youtube that's surprisingly dope

in truth shift k3y is to me like the meiotic pop cell division of what i wanted royal-t to be, if that makes any sense (don't answer that)

xp i was referring to the b-rock remix ft twista! aka one of the best things ever made!

r|t|c, Thursday, 6 March 2014 19:46 (ten years ago) link

idk, dude looks like a teenage brother to me.

wow at Route 94's "My Love' going to number one in the UK. Such an awesome tune, and (relatively) tracky for a big crossover hit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS46C2z5lVE&feature=share

So nice when tunes I think of as "DJ Q set tunes" successfully make the jump to massive anthem.

Tim F, Monday, 10 March 2014 05:24 (ten years ago) link

jess glynne sounds completely different on "my love" than she does on "rather be"

lex pretend, Monday, 10 March 2014 10:10 (ten years ago) link

had a hands-in-the-air moment at XOYO saturday to "my love", felt very house-is-a-feeling amid the punishing clatter of the rest of the set

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 10 March 2014 11:24 (ten years ago) link

just listened to the new redlight ep, on first blush nothing's as great as "36" but the raekwon collab and their take on moody r&b with syron are worth hearing i guess

This is new on Black Butter and is absolutely booming, like Au Seve with a tornado of chipmunk voices flying around it.

That lot all releasing albums to their potential would tip this whole thing over from alarmingly consistent cottage industry to full blown British pop golden age.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 March 2014 12:11 (ten years ago) link

the flip side of Kidnap Kid's new single, "Like You Used To", is great too - and more radio friendly than "Stronger".
