the most painstaking, humorless people in the world (lukas), Tuesday, 6 January 2015 21:03 (nine years ago) link

that would be a shame as i still use it all the time but i am wondering what is keeping it open tbh

don't ask me why i posted this (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 January 2015 21:12 (nine years ago) link

I've heard about last.fm pulling the plug for a while but last time I checked they were gaining users at a high rate so I don't know about that happening soon

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 21:18 (nine years ago) link

I would be absolutely devastated if they shut down.

austinato (Austin), Wednesday, 7 January 2015 02:20 (nine years ago) link

How do you check to see the rate at which they're gaining users?

Position Position, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 03:24 (nine years ago) link

I remember seeing that some time ago:
http://www.skilledtests.com/wiki/Last.fm_statistics#user_accounts_at_last.fm

Could be bullshit obv and it was a bit better in my memory but still it seems to keep growing.

Dinsdale, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 06:44 (nine years ago) link

three months pass...

i'd be sad if this shut down but i assume someone else would pick up the torch for at least the personal stats component of it, which is all i care about anyway. it's really neat to have a record of my listening habits for the past 12 years, i don't need to have it social-media-ized though.

ciderpress, Friday, 1 May 2015 17:39 (eight years ago) link

Imagine if they shut this down without warning, I could easily see more than a few people having a meltdown because their stats have disappeared.

I'm the reverse, I don't care about the scrobbling only the social media aspects

xp

they ever gonna fix the iTunes plugin for this?

frogbs, Friday, 1 May 2015 18:50 (eight years ago) link

What's wrong with it?

austinato (Austin), Friday, 1 May 2015 19:14 (eight years ago) link

their "similar artists" algorithm is really really good.

brimstead, Friday, 1 May 2015 19:57 (eight years ago) link

i mean, the results of it is really really good. way deeper and more accurate than anything else on the net i've seen.

brimstead, Friday, 1 May 2015 20:00 (eight years ago) link

xxp - it doesn't work with newer versions of iTunes

frogbs, Friday, 1 May 2015 20:38 (eight years ago) link

seems to work fine for me (Mac/iTunes 12.1.something)

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Friday, 1 May 2015 20:53 (eight years ago) link

It also works fine for me (Vista w/latest iTunes).

austinato (Austin), Friday, 1 May 2015 22:43 (eight years ago) link

i don't care as much about last.fm now that less of my listening happens on platforms allowing (decent) scrobbling

dyl, Friday, 1 May 2015 22:55 (eight years ago) link

Is there something more concrete about them shutting down than Dudes In A Thread Talking About It?

subject's companion from prior surveillance (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 1 May 2015 23:11 (eight years ago) link

No, just speculation at this point.

austinato (Austin), Saturday, 2 May 2015 00:12 (eight years ago) link

I still hate the beta. Last.fm gonna lose a lot of users when they roll it out. I've had access to the beta for 2 or 3 months and its awful. You don't even get the pic of the album cover beside the tracks now.

every scrobbling mechanism I use seems to have decided to become a dick and not record anything I listen to

same, none of my ipod plays get scrobbled, plus the fact that a large portion of my listening is on youtube and this new design = seeya later

They finally updated their Android app and... now nothing scrobbles at all. Nice work guys.

that's hideous. stop making everything so desktop unfriendly.
what i want from last fm is to see someone's entire music taste in one vista

cerealbar, Friday, 19 June 2015 18:33 (eight years ago) link

i have no idea why they have changed it. as you say, it's hideous.

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 19 June 2015 20:36 (eight years ago) link

I'm pretty bummed out about the Android app not working. I use my phone as my portable music player and virtually all my digital listening is done this way, and I really liked having it log all my songs because I use the gig recommendations RSS feed to notify me when bands I like are playing live. That's pretty much the main reason I even have a last.fm account.

Apart from the official app (which has always been shit, but at least it used to scrobble tracks), I've tried Simple last.fm Scrobbler, Scrobb, Last.fm for Android and none of the bastards work.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 22 June 2015 09:38 (eight years ago) link

This app has been solid the entire time on OS X: http://meloapp.com

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 22 June 2015 19:38 (eight years ago) link

All I want from Last.FM is for it to log what I listen to over the weeks/months/years and to display this in list form. That's all. And the android app does not do this and never has.

boat of boats (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 09:57 (eight years ago) link

The old Android app used to scrobble for me, certainly worked a lot better than the Itunes scrobbler which never worked from my ipod properly, used to randomly scrobble about 5% of songs I listened to.

Apart from scrobbling the old app was total shit though. The events list had the wrong dates on it! The further in the future the gig was, the more inaccurate the date would be. I dunno how they managed that, probably takes some effort to code something that badly.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 10:04 (eight years ago) link

it always scrobbled, but you couldn't look at any top-tracks or artists lists, so pointless.

boat of boats (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 10:06 (eight years ago) link

also, my top artists list has never changed since 2011 when for about 6 months everything i listened to scrobbled approx 10 times per play.

one month passes...

So, I've just heard from a good friend of mine that uses this thing quite a lot that apparently they've just rolled out the new site today, but unfortunately it seems that last.fm have decided to not complete work on the site before rolling it out, so the general vibe is that last.fm have half-assed it. I'm hearing about disabled features all over the place, the site generally not working properly and things going missing, coupled with the fact that it doesn't seem like many folks are keen on the new layout to begin with.

I looked over to the last.fm website support forum out of curiosity, and as you'd expect there's plenty of whining.

It looks like some people have had duplicate scrobbles return that they got rid of ages ago, and private messages that they'd deleted returning to their inboxes etc.

uggh, my eyes

wow, it looks awful

PaulTMA, Monday, 17 August 2015 15:18 (eight years ago) link

From the sounds of it, they've wildly over-complicated the whole site. Personally, I thought it was at its best when it was the original Audioscrobbler.

told you it was shite

Music purists everywhere are cringing at the idea of song title - artist. Myself included. Petty, yes, but kind of a huge deal to someone who sees music as their life and thus Last.FM as a big part of that venture.

i've tried to compose a snarky put-down for this gentleman but really

A couple of months back, we launched a BETA version of the new Last.fm to registered users and now we're ready for it to go live to everyone.

The new, re-imagined Last.fm includes a host of innovative features that will help users better navigate, explore and enjoy an infinite universe of music.

Some of the features included are:
The new User Homepage - which includes tracks, albums, artists and events (with even more to come) - surfaces all the music you are sure to love in one handy place. Whether it's a brand new release or a forgotten favourite, click play to listen instantly via the new Last.fm Playbar
Last.fm Live lets you visualise in real-time the listening habits and trends of Last.fm's global community. It does this by using a series of interactive widgets that surface trending music, artists, most loved tracks and more. Essentially, what Last.fm users are listening to and where.
A new Library Explorer, which enables you to delve deep into your listening history to rekindle those distant memories. What were you listening to on that hazy day back in Summer 2009? Last.fm can tell you exactly that.
The new Last.fm Playbar, gives you access to a huge catalogue of music by pulling in music from multiple streaming sources and staying with you across the site wherever your Last.fm journey takes you.
Last.fm has also added Metacritic scores to album pages. Metacritic aggregates music reviews from leading critics around the world; meaning you can now see what scores albums are given by tastemakers alongside our listening data from fans.
By surfacing Last.fm's listening data and music in new and more relevant ways, we're able to offer users the strongest, most personalised music recommendations around. Last.fm does this by connecting the most popular places to listen, watch and share music - from Spotify to YouTube, iTunes to Tidal - while organising your listening history and introducing you to music based on your tastes.
Love,
Last.fm
