American Horror is their best song yet.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 17 February 2014 16:56 (ten years ago) link

man, both times i've seen them in the last six months have been pretty disappointing. i can't really fault a band in their position - on the up, touring/travelling constantly, presumably under a ton of pressure - to be 100% into it at every show, but never before have I seen a band just like ooooooze "we really dont want to be here." they played like 6 songs both times. the songs are really good though so I'll see them again when they're in town. haven't heard the ep

Anyone seeing them (hopefully play more than six songs) in London tomorrow?

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Monday, 17 February 2014 18:32 (ten years ago) link

first time i saw them, last august, full set (9 songs, but the show in january was def half as long). judge for yourself:

They were great! Played for the best part of an hour, did most of Major Arcana and a bunch of newer / older stuff. Seemed really pleased to be here - lots of pogoing and jokes about multiplayer Pokemon.

Definitely worth seeing at their other show tomorrow if anyone has the chance.

my pal matt r. is doing cool stuff since he left speedy. here he is with my pals jen and jeremy. he's been playing with the lentils too. and he's gonna go on tour with the group he has started with my pal olivia and my pal ted of feeding tube records/zebu/egg eggs. so, if you are in europe, go see them. he also has a rad tape label: http://www.hiddentempletapes.com/

She talks about Stephen Malkmus and more...

excerpts--

For its last album, Speedy Ortiz jammed the recording of 14 songs into four days. This time, Ms. Dupuis and her bandmates — Devin McKnight on guitar, Darl Ferm on bass, Mike Falcone on drums — worked for a relatively lavish three weeks...

What do you listen to on tour?

We tour really cheap, in a minivan, and the driver decides. Clipse is probably the biggest overlap. We get so burned out on hearing rock every night that we gravitate a lot toward pop and rap...

What other singers and lyricists have influenced your writing?

Fiona Apple does things with sentences over the course of a verse that I can’t even believe. So I’ll keep that in mind: “What would Fiona Apple do?” I also sang in a children’s choir until I was 16, and we would tour internationally. I was really into stuff that was harmony-heavy because that was what I was spending 10 hours a week doing in rehearsal. I’ve always thought Beyoncé’s vocal harmonies were really weird. A lot of the stuff in the choir was really dissonant, and she’ll do that — the harmony will be in a totally different key. Another one that is obvious to me but maybe doesn’t come across is Aaliyah. There were certain things on this record where I was like: “Oh, Aaliyah wouldn’t push this. She would do it calm.” And the reverse reverb that Timbaland would apply to her vocals, we used that on a couple songs.

third or fourth song the low-key intertwining verse segments remind me of Slint a bit, or Slint style interplay applied to a pop song structure

(the one that says don't ever touch my ring you fool you'll be curse for a lifetime in the chorus)

there's definitely the hint of math in here, and it's way heavier than other records of its type

is this where I mention the Mitski album from last year too? check it out, srsly

PORC EPIC SAVVAGE (imago), Monday, 13 April 2015 20:11 (nine years ago) link

not familiar w/Mitski

yeah i like this because it's definitely got great hooks and pop instincts but i hear elements the aforementioned bands, Polvo, etc that type of stuff without getting too in the capital-M math like Don Cab or A Minor Forest or whatever

guys

i love the 90s

Van Horn Street, Monday, 13 April 2015 23:58 (nine years ago) link

"mainlander" = college rock bands situated in a local area

(my word for it)

i went on Urban Dictionary and apparently that term has offensive connotations. didn't mean that. doh

yes

Thanks for the Mitski tip. I'm a sucker for this kind of style and the songs/lyrics/persona are more distinct/memorable than most. This is what I'm hoping the new Waxahatchee album will be like (when I get around to hearing it).
