I don't know, maybe it's very subjective. I work with people just a little younger than this age now and watching the show kinda makes me feel creepy like I'm eavesdropping on a part in a dorm or something. I'm sure I have old-guy stuff I should rather be doing. But the recent episodes I've seen have just been airless and bad. I feel life passing me by as I watch it.

I also no longer think Lena Dunham is smart or fun. Well, I definitely don't think she's fun and if she's smart, she's not being generous with that gift at present.

i would be happy to outsource some of the blame for what this show is like now to a kind of Apatowization, & a misread of its original value, but yeah it is frustrating to see it vaguely resemble & then operate totally differently from the impulses that made it so smart. that there's a season-three rearrangement of existing characters into a new couple just seems like the basest most clasically moorless move.

last episode i thought the sympathetic music when hannah had the "oh no i might stop writing" realization was jarring. like we were being asked to genuinely relate to that sort of anxiety, instead of looking askance at it.

i kinda stopped taking this show seriously until i get to the next ep that dunham wrote solo. is that happening?

Whoa, I really liked tonight's episode. I mean, it wasn't subtle at all in how it basically addressed the complaints people have about every character (interestingly, Jessa got the least of the crossfire) but I think the show's been building up to something like this for awhile now and it's something the show needs.

Also, is Danny Strong gay???

I kind of lost my steam on this show after the first few this season. I have also had the thoughts stated above that (1) the show might be drifting as it becomes "apatowized" or (2) all those times where I wasn't sure exactly how smart and self-aware dunham was really being might be resolved in favor of less smart and less self-aware

I don't know if tonight's episode indicated self-awareness or just an ability to read comment sections.

kind of a disconcerting "Friends"-like sitcommy vibe to this episode. not necessarily a bad thing but everyone drunkenly calling each other out feels a little rote at this point.

1. There was a whole Friends-related motif in this week's (excellent) episode of Looking.

2. DS is also playing a psychotic, abusive prison guard in a women's prison on the current season of Justified, if you're inclined to read into casting.

Okay, so a bit of wishful thinking on my part (he's kinda cute imo) but it's less of a stretch for him to actually be gay because of a role on Girls than for him to be psychotic and abusive in real life because of a role on Justified.

But yes, it's probably mostly wishful thinking.

xp, actually I take back what I said, I finally watched ep 4 thru 6 and mostly really enjoyed them. Although I agree that the Ray and Marnie thing was fucking stoopid.

I think I enjoy this show more when I stop expecting any kind of radical critique out of it. There's an Apatovian conservatism at the heart of the show.

episode felt very much like a precocious college assignment.

I don't know if it's because I had just woken up when I watched it & was still kinda groggy, but good god was the pacing of this ep relentless or what?! I'm not sure I would be as charitable as Dunham, who described it as "wall-to-wall fun scenes" in her weird post-credits behind-the-scenes interview...

OTOH, it definitely captured some of the stifling feeling of a stay at the beach, so kudos

Danny Strong wrote the screenplay for Mocking Jay, wtf. I didn't realize he'd been doing so much screenwriting.

He also wrote the Game Change movie.

And Recount. They are both kind of dire though.

The Adam/Caroline blow-up fight was kind of annoying, the way they staged it so he was on top of her at the end for like three minutes, hitting you over the head with the irony "HAHA SEE LOOK HE IS IN A SEXUAL POSITION WITH HER!" like "Oh I was in my college drama club's production of The House of Yes and I like 'taboos'"

or it was staged so they looked like pre-teen kids fighting

just watched episode 6, feels like this show has really come into its stride imo. the scene with shoshanna and the guy in the library was brilliant.

the getting-out-of-the-city eps have always been classic and this was another.

Charlie's business failed?? is that LD having a subtle pop at the actor who played him for leaving i wonder.. wouldn't blame her like.

this episode was wonderful and real and it feels like she's kinda leveling all of the ill-conceived flimsy critiques ppl have made of this show
