i think its just called 'bronies'! its on netflix, and very boring tbh because there is nothing notable about these kids unless youre aghast that a boy would be into a 'girl thing'

i quite enjoyed the andrew wk appearance at a brony convention, he def 'got it'

i haven't seen the doc but it's probably reasonable to draw a line between the goofy kids who like the show and the creepy ones who've sexualized it?

having had to deal with Bronies on occasion (I decided to organize a MLP CCG tournament at one of my shops, etc.), they're pretty much all nice and polite, no more awkward than the D&D or Magic nerds. Maybe they all secretly go home and jerk off to Derpy but they just seem like kids who needed something to unite around and picked MLP.

iirc this was made with the explicit aim to give bronies a better name... like if you ever watch one of them prison guard TV shows on basic cable they never show you the roided out dudes who want to crack some black people skulls. they show you captain america and hard working mom

There's someone who is into everything. I saw a show recently where a guy was in a sexual (he made a big point of emphasizing the sex part) relationship with 20 inflatable pool toys.

I never got a "male kids into female-targeted cartoon" vibe, although that is a good basis for a film showing these are just kids who like a well-scripted animated show. I tend to get a "people who are socially awkward and older than the target audience who are engaging with the source material in deviant ways because they are neurotypical but very socially underdeveloped and have sexual attachments to cartoon horses" thing.
