i'll give it a chance if it makes it to series. it won't be the same without the excessive swearing though

Nhex, Sunday, 9 February 2014 18:11 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I'll definitely watch it. Preacher's a good yarn for all its faults.

If they stick to the comics, "Mom?" will be the scene I'll anticipate.

This thread isn't about the movie called Preacher that I thought it was about.

This seems like a weird idea... I mean, no way can they use the whole God subplot (especially its conclusion) on American TV, right? And if they don't use it, the whole premise of the story is changed.

Tuomas, Monday, 10 February 2014 12:06 (ten years ago) link

And even though The Da Vinci Code did popularize the whole "Jesus had kids and his bloodline is still around" theory, I can imagine some viewers getting a bit upset if the series uses Ennis's particular version of Jesus's descendants.

Tuomas, Monday, 10 February 2014 12:12 (ten years ago) link

Atheism is hot and sexy these days -- I could see them using everything from the book. Maybe even the "fuck"s, with bleeps, which would kinda be hilarious.

Dr. Strongo's Peppermint Paté (WilliamC), Monday, 10 February 2014 14:05 (ten years ago) link

SPOILERS!!

But the series isn't really about atheism, it's about the Christian god being a manipulative jerk, and his followers being idiots and/or dangerous and violent fanatics, and it ends with said god and his angels being shot to death, which is seen as a justified act of revenge and generally a good thing. So even if "atheism is hot and sexy", I'd assume those plot points would be quite controversial.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 February 2014 13:32 (ten years ago) link

Executive producers tend to be fairly hands-off, don't they? I expect Rogan & Goldberg's involvement helped get this commissioned, but they probably won't be hugely involved beyond that.

So glad it wasn't the Daredevil guy who ended up doing it. Can only imagine what a trainwreck that would've been.

Pheeel, Thursday, 13 February 2014 10:04 (ten years ago) link

Daredevil guy = Ben Affleck?

Tuomas, Thursday, 13 February 2014 15:39 (ten years ago) link

Haha, no. Mark Steven Johnson, writer-director of Daredevil(and GHOST RIDER!), was apparently lined-up for show-running duties when this was still at HBO.

Pheeel, Thursday, 13 February 2014 20:29 (ten years ago) link

apparently = wrote a pilot and plotted multiple new stories with Ennis for a year or three

(D1CK$) (sic), Thursday, 13 February 2014 20:50 (ten years ago) link

Okay, I thought you were talking about Affleck, because years ago it was rumoured he'd be playing Jesse Custer in a Preacher movie.

weird how they completely avoided admitting any supernatural element, though i'm pretty sure it's still in there
if it's not like the comic book in any way, what's the point?

Nhex, Monday, 2 November 2015 16:27 (eight years ago) link

It's pretty weird, the official copy accompanying the Youtube video says "a supernatural Preacher, a gun-toting ex, and an Irish vampire are coming to AMC mid-2016", but the video shows absolutely none of those elements, not even Tulip's guns. Cassidy has a few lines, but the vampire thing isn't alluded to, you'd think that would a selling point with all the succesful vampire series of recent years? Though based on the trailer it seems more like they're trying to market this as a Breaking Bad -style hard-boiled crime series, so maybe they thought vampirism would attract the wrong kind of crowd?

Tuomas, Monday, 2 November 2015 16:47 (eight years ago) link

and yet they advertised this during the Walking Dead 90-min special last night...

Nhex, Monday, 2 November 2015 16:48 (eight years ago) link

test a bunch of promotional approaches, gauge which ones work best, stress those in the leadup, air the series you were going to air all along (maybe with a little tweaking in post)

I don't know how many times I've asked this question over the years. What's the point in everything hinging on a particular property if you're going to tweak said property to the point where it's unrecognizable to its existing fanbase and it isn't well-known enough to lure newcomers via brand recognition? Take a peek at the upcoming Lucifer show for similar shenanigans. Why make an original procedural about the devil helping the police solve crimes when you can take a shit all over something that already exists?

Mind you, I think straying from Preacher's roots can only be an improvement.

Trimming The Hegyes: The Life & Times Of A Sweathog's Barber (Old Lunch), Monday, 2 November 2015 17:21 (eight years ago) link

I think the main story and main characters in Preacher are pretty good and might make for a decent TV series. It's all the extra stuff, the macho posturing, the homophobic minor characters, Ennis' anti-PC rants, etc, which makes it less than perfect.

Tuomas, Monday, 2 November 2015 18:47 (eight years ago) link

And by 'extra stuff', you of course mean the bulk of the series.

Trimming The Hegyes: The Life & Times Of A Sweathog's Barber (Old Lunch), Monday, 2 November 2015 18:50 (eight years ago) link

i guess i'm "lucky" i read the series without caring too much about the politics at the time

Nhex, Monday, 2 November 2015 19:19 (eight years ago) link

I wasn't exactly a paragon of maturity when I read the series (or now, to be fair) but I still remember thinking it was often over the top juvenile.

Trimming The Hegyes: The Life & Times Of A Sweathog's Barber (Old Lunch), Monday, 2 November 2015 19:23 (eight years ago) link

I couldn't finish the first trade paper collection. It's a tossup between Transmetropolitan and Preacher for worst series I've tried to get into.

Transmet is at least 60x worse than Preacher though

let no-one live rent free in your butt (sic), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 05:07 (eight years ago) link

Yes - Preacher also much better drawn than Transmet (not that ILC ever seems to give much of a shit about the pictures side of the word/image equation)

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 10:04 (eight years ago) link

Agreed. For all his faults, Ennis at least knows how to writer interesting, well fleshed-out characters. In fact, I'd say characterization is probably his greatest strength, the problems only arise when he decides to make them a mouthpiece for whatever rant he has on his mind this month. This is why I though Boys as a whole was better than Preacher... In that comic he usually toned down the rants (though The Legends still gets a few lengthy ones), and it also felt like he was genuinely trying to tackle with chauvinism/sexism present in his earlier work with the character arcs of Wee Hughie and Starlight.

Preacher had some good plotting, entertaining dialogue and exciting twists and turns for all its faults. Literally no idea how the series will turn out.

C+F - no matches found for Steve Dillon

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 12:14 (eight years ago) link

This thread is for the movie/TV adaptation of Preacher though... Seems much more likely that they'll adapt Ennis' stories than Dillon's art, so the pictures aren't really a big part of the discussion.

It's an interesting question though: are there many comic book movies/shows that have tried to adapt the visual style of the source material, and not just the story? Off the top of my head, the only examples I can think of are Sin City. Persepolis, and the Corto Maltese movie. And I guess some anime movies too, like Akira. But obviously this is easier to do with animation than with live action, is Sin City the only movie that tried the latter?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 12:24 (eight years ago) link

I think in live-action comic book movies/shows, most of the times they only add a few shots that homage specific panels/pages, like the recent episode of the Flash series that did homage to the famous "Flash of Two Worlds" cover image.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 12:28 (eight years ago) link

advance publicity for Beatty's Dick Tracy made a huge deal about how comics-like the block-colours production design was, apparently all written by PRs and reporters who had never looked at a panel of Gould.

oh yeah, definitely. Scott Pilgrim the film also continued the visual motifs that the comic used in aping video games as well

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 19:31 (eight years ago) link

Tintin?

a) rotoscoping is not live-action, and b) one takes it you have never read a Tintin book

Scott Pilgrim fantastic at capturing the mixture of intimacy and vivacity of the comic, but not that visually similar on a style basis. especially for being in rich, saturated colour

Walking Dead number one is selling for thousands; there's a sudden surge on preacher insofar as if it becomes popular it's a CULTURAL TOUCHSTONE
seems silly but happy to have it happen. Now what do I do with the other 5000 odd floppies? Do people want full runs of Howard the Duck anymore?
