was listening to it again this morning and was struck by how thematically cohesive it is - internet age referendum / reflection on fame, pop music, social justice, stunna shades. maybe that's what makes it seem more aurally cohesive, the riffing on topic?

also wanna give a shoutout to "stand up comedy", the chewy off-center center of our tootsie roll pop clusterfuck

still have not heard actual U2 album lol

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 15:41 (fifteen years ago) link

lol, from The Ideal Copy newsletter sent out today:

The new U2 album is out today and we are bewildered that only one customer has ordered it from us. Many ordered the single which only results in more head-scratching about the album. (Speaking of the single, Get On Your Boots, we are attempting to track down the 3-Track CD single and will hopefully have that next week.)

It's tough to compete one price with the retail giants, but we're pretty sure we have the lowest price on the Vinyl release, plus we've finally activated and confirmed the Japanese Edition which does have one Bonus Track.

lol should we forward them our link, see if they do any better

oh good, when the album flops they can blame us

Universal Music Group today announced a Q1 earnings impairment due to a surreptitious copycat release of U2's latest album which caused mass consumer confusion. Said one befuddled music fan, "I listened to what I thought was an Internet stream of the new U2 album, and it sounded like Bono's idea of a sick joke. I was so paralyzed by fear and loathing, I couldn't bring myself to buy it at Wal-mart. Also, the economy."

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:00 (fifteen years ago) link

oh my god that is classic.

Guys, think about it for more than a second. Edward III made that up. (Funny but in no way true.)

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:28 (fifteen years ago) link

no I think that's an official press release from the future

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link

All press releases from the future will end "Also, the economy"...

snoball, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I'll just add to the chorus of this is totally awesome.

i put a post up on my blog about this, too

Beatrix Kiddo, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Two songs that directly parody U2 seems like just the right amount.

I like a lot of this! I think the Elvis Telecom track before it goes noizy is the high point (I like it after that as well, just not as much)

Luka ModReq (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:13 (fifteen years ago) link

all i can say is it was awesome to contribute a jam to this, and that i am glad i bothered recording the vocal because it had to be done in one take in a closet while my wife was asleep and sick

Now that's dedication!

Still More Goth Than Your Cat's Asshole (Bimble), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:13 (fifteen years ago) link

And to such great effect!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:13 (fifteen years ago) link

did your wife know you were in the closet?

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:25 (fifteen years ago) link

oops that sounds like a personal question

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:26 (fifteen years ago) link

honey, if you need me I'll just be over here in the closet, mocking bono

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:28 (fifteen years ago) link

to great effect

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:28 (fifteen years ago) link

i think now is as an appropriate use of this sentence closer as can ever be, but no she did not know i was in the closet, no homo.

Marrakesh and Ashley Olsen (m bison), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:40 (fifteen years ago) link

when it posted, she listened to the song and called me ridiculous (busting chops, not hateful btw!)

Marrakesh and Ashley Olsen (m bison), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:40 (fifteen years ago) link

hopefully she sang it to the tune of "magnificent"

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 04:04 (fifteen years ago) link

i am now creating that memory regardless if she did or not

Marrakesh and Ashley Olsen (m bison), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 04:06 (fifteen years ago) link

"Magnificent (Ridiculous Remix)"

Actually, there IS going to be a remix collection, surely.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 04:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Really can't pick my favorite on this. "Breathe" has maybe the best Bono goofing (and a really nice groove!), but I'm also a sucker for the Laurie Anderson flavor of "Stand Up Comedy"...

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 04:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Bison, did you masturbate in the closet?

Still More Goth Than Your Cat's Asshole (Bimble), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 06:55 (fifteen years ago) link

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 13:16 (fifteen years ago) link

bimble thats not where i handle my business, it is where i store things with a low priority for immediate retrieval

Marrakesh and Ashley Olsen (m bison), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 13:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I nominate "mocking bono" as the new euphemism for handling your business

your roommate's been forever in the bathroom, is he mocking bono in there?

you all do understand that ILX is pretty much mandated to subject the forthcoming Limp Bizkit joint to the same treatment, right?

Beatrix Kiddo, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 13:54 (fifteen years ago) link

the Fügügüffü track sounds like beta band!

xpost to wanking joke: "Hang on, I'm nearly at the Edge ... aargh, it's gone Numb."

Anyway. This is a masterpiece, and I've sent a link to various dudes (including a now-on-a-comeback eighties musician friend; really interested to see what he thinks) and had some incredibly positive responses so far. Me: I just love it to bits.

I saw a CD of the U2 album this morning and the equal sign is actually a sticker on the wrapping!

ZS should do a "peel slowly and see" version that reveals santorum.jpg

Yeah it does, actually! I never would have thought of that. I think it's to do with the vocals.

ah, good memories !
so there's no album worth doing it again in the pipe ?

Defintely the new Arcade Fire album, although preferrably the joke tracklisting that was floating around. In fact, I volunteer to be the midwife that brings Neighborhood #5 (Hockey) kicking and screaming into the world.
