i've been playing with votive/tealight candleholders in the shape of heads, monsters, tiki types. Ceramic JackoLanterns of sorts. the first is still in the carving stage, the second is fired and hanging out.

one month passes...

Anyway, it's been awhile. I've fallen out of assiduously documenting this stuff but took a few photos last evening.

My first handbuilt joined piece. I gave this to a lady who lives down the hall who lives in an amazing sugarplum palace and I hope she loves it. I got a hug.

One of three little brothers who guard the front door and hold down votive candles. This guy's based loosely on the Kodama from Princess Mononoke, hence the cockeyed stare.

BRRRROOOTHERS
/otter jugband xmas

Continued experimentation with small bowls to give away as gifts. I'm enjoying leaving the base raw so that the clay is tactile and pleasant to touch but smooth.

The current batch of small bowls (these average about two to three inches tall, 5 inches at the rim and 2 inches at the base) from my current practice; I have another ten of these due out of the kiln in the next two weeks and am aiming to make about twenty or twenty-five of them to give to friends and folks I'm getting to know. Next up should be practicing making handles for coffee cups, which I'm no good at. That'll be a good excuse to make more doofus-y cartoon cups and hopefully do a powerpuff gal for you as well EZ.

it's a little old octogenarian who lives on my floor and decorates the door of her apartment with an array of holiday and season-related flair. it's in regular rotation and always makes me smile. I was taking out my garbage when she poked her head out to add water to the plants that were part of that creche and i told her how much i liked her style. She's an ex nursery school teacher, still heavily made up with coiffed frost white hair even in a housecoat. Her door was open and the inside of her house was like a cake topping, everything was pink and spotless white. Super shag carpet and doilies and hummels and curio cabinets. She was like the kind witch from Hansel and Gretel only harmless. Love that lady.

aw, she sounds awesome

I'm gonna paint in the eyes and blouse green, put a clear glaze over the rest of the figure and then do the rest in a light blue. Whattayathink?

i've been putting in an average of about ten hours a week for the past month on this stuff and did a six hour session today. feels good man

I'm really glad (even if no one else is) that I've been posting work in this thread for so long. It's helpful to see work I've done from two years ago to compare growth and recognize my improvement... working in a studio alongside professional art and production potters can be pretty intimidating so i need occasional reminders that I've been getting better at this. Also I've given away about ninety percent of the work in this thread and it's nice to have some reference record.

two weeks pass...

Finished product EZS, whattayathink? It's about 4 inches tall and wide with another two inches for the handle.

Awesome! Drop me a line and let me know what I owe you.

You rock, forks.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 30 June 2014 19:00 (nine years ago) link

just hitcha

three weeks pass...

Two Adventure Time cups, sides A and B there.

The aardvark cup is part of a much more involved piece of work that will likely keep me busy to the end of 2015 so I'll comment a bit more about what that's on later.

two weeks pass...

okay, giving up

six months pass...

churned out about fifteen pieces in the past two months, including this sizable incised bowl. Kinda proud of it.

Are the vases made by dipping them in slip and then scraping the patterns in when it's dry?

nickn, Monday, 9 February 2015 02:33 (nine years ago) link

nice work!

Nhex, Monday, 9 February 2015 03:44 (nine years ago) link

thanks!
yeah, with all those I take raw clay, dip it in porcelain slip and then sgrafitto with loop tools and needles
the vase is in quarters: crosses, grey matter, chain links and keith haring homage
