Very moving song. This would choke me up if I heard it late at night on the radio.

Evan R, Monday, 3 February 2014 20:45 (ten years ago) link

kind of minor but it's alright

k3vin k., Monday, 3 February 2014 20:45 (ten years ago) link

Yeah

Tim F, Monday, 3 February 2014 20:50 (ten years ago) link

sounds like one of the Art Dealer Chic tracks that didn't make my final cut.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 February 2014 20:51 (ten years ago) link

It repeats some of the same sounds as ADC/KD, so it's a bit redundant in that sense, but the sentiments are a lot more realized. The song definitely connects in a way the lesser ADC tracks didn't

Evan R, Monday, 3 February 2014 20:55 (ten years ago) link

as a tune it's like a 7.5 out of 10 but lyrically it aligns w/ my life to a scary degree so i'm kind of smitten

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 February 2014 20:55 (ten years ago) link

i just want someone to smoke with me, babe
and lay with me, babe
and laugh with me, babe
i just want the simple things

preach bruh

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 February 2014 20:57 (ten years ago) link

ick on the free spirit stuff though

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 February 2014 20:57 (ten years ago) link

well yeah but that idea is always lurking in his music

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 February 2014 20:58 (ten years ago) link

i hear this as a companion piece to "#beautiful" in a few ways

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 February 2014 20:59 (ten years ago) link

xxxp

I mean, who doesn't want that kind of companionship? It's a beautifully simple, universal sentiment.

Song would have been a better Kaleidoscope Dream closer than "Candles in the Sun," since the personal scope is way more in keeping with the rest of the album than the babies on crack/save the world goofiness of "Candles"

Evan R, Monday, 3 February 2014 20:59 (ten years ago) link

i hope the rock direction of these latest two freebies are some experimentation though and not a BOLD NEW DIRECTION

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 February 2014 21:05 (ten years ago) link

His greatest gift is to change these banalities he barely sketches into privileged moments, in every sense: the audience is almost playing voyeur.

i think this and the Adult Swim track are probably coming out between album cycles pointedly because they're inaccessible little things that don't pose a threat of popping off and becoming a radio hit before they've started gearing up the promotional machine. also they sound self-produced, maybe he's doing a lot of stuff on his own before he goes in the studio with outside producers to get something more polished. the guitar was always there, though, there's YouTubes of him playing covers on guitar from a year before the first album. maybe it'll be on the next album heavier, though, i could see it.

scott c-word (some dude), Monday, 3 February 2014 21:19 (ten years ago) link

yeah i mean it's a thin line cf his live shows but i hope he stays more r&b

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 February 2014 21:20 (ten years ago) link

"Arch & Point" worked as genre exercise AND song but yeah I wouldn't want a whole album of clones.

a whole album of "Use Me"s however

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 February 2014 21:23 (ten years ago) link

His live show is guitar heavy to an album obnoxious degree (it's cool at first but after a while it begins to feel like a Living Colour concert or something). He's got a good thing going on urban radio, though, so I'm sure he's not going to sacrifice that by going full Chili Peppers on his next major release

Evan R, Monday, 3 February 2014 21:23 (ten years ago) link

I like the guitar heavy stuff, so I don;'t really mind.

Greer, Monday, 3 February 2014 21:26 (ten years ago) link

This is def better than that adult swim track.

raggett neds of your summer dress (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 February 2014 05:09 (ten years ago) link

Heard the first line as "She said, 'I don't want a Midol.'"

Mi-mi-mi-mi-Miguel and the Jets

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 21 March 2014 17:23 (ten years ago) link

Less annoying than the original. But then again, most things are.

Inside Lewellyn Sinclair (cryptosicko), Friday, 21 March 2014 17:45 (ten years ago) link

The original used to bug me a lot but ultimately became one of my favorite Elton songs. Miggy's version is FIRE.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 March 2014 20:42 (ten years ago) link

that synth bass is killer. hope his next album has some stuff with that sound.

The Greta Gerwig In The Sky (some dude), Friday, 21 March 2014 20:51 (ten years ago) link

Pointless, but, man, I get so much pleasure from hearing him sing, partly because he does.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 21 March 2014 20:53 (ten years ago) link

can't listen right now but I'll have you know I KILLED THE FUCK OUT OF "Benny" at karaoke a month or two back, Kate78 can back me up on this

The Reverend, Friday, 21 March 2014 20:56 (ten years ago) link

did you then proceed to leap over the bar and kick some poor woman in the head?

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 March 2014 20:57 (ten years ago) link

love it, love it.

based on this and his A+ Zombies cover on 'don't look back', I'd love to hear him do a covers album at some point in the future

and Alfred otm

Not even Wale could ruin this. But Wale really should stop anyway.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 22 March 2014 06:12 (ten years ago) link

Wale is so neutral and faceless that he's usually only a problem if left to his own devices. He ain't fuckin up shit. But Walereally should stop anyway.

The Reverend, Saturday, 22 March 2014 06:52 (ten years ago) link

Guest raps on otherwise fairly faithful covers of songs that didn't have a rap to begin with are just generally a bad look, Wale or not

The Greta Gerwig In The Sky (some dude), Saturday, 22 March 2014 14:21 (ten years ago) link

yall dont have the benny & the jets live at bowery ballroom bootleg w guest rap by a young kurtis blow?

maura, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 13:12 (ten years ago) link

When I saw Miguel live he had a stereotypical bar-band guitarist in his band

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:30 (ten years ago) link

there's a lot of amused posts about his guitarist itt, who looks goofy but adds some great stuff to "Adorn" and some other songs imo

posi riot (some dude), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:34 (ten years ago) link

I'm just reminded of how I much better the song "Game of Love" would be if it didn't have Santana on it.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:37 (ten years ago) link

love his guitarist
