btw, that makes two episodes this season that make a gag on Gary Oldman's classic line from The Professional. i can only hope this trend continues.

kept thinking about tv shows within tv shows: an ocd thread for jaymc and nabisco because Nathan Fillion showed up in character a mere week after Chang yelled out the actor's name as his same sex celebrity crush.

Return of Eddie Pepitone and Jerry Minor playing a janitor named "Jerry"
Everyone reacting to the bear tragedy reminded me of something I liked from earlier years, usually involving insults to Leonard: the feeling of this strange world full of off-camera shot they all live in which we only get to see 22 minutes of each week.

There were lots of individual bits that made me laugh in this episode but it still felt oddly flat and devoid of a centre. Show is going to be totally different now there's no Pierce and no Troy and that the study group is no longer a thing.
I can see where they're going with the Save Greendale Community but it still felt a bit weird to see them all sitting round the table with Buzz Hickey and Professor Duncan and Chang, like there's a dynamic that needs to be established all over again, and this is a show that has made group dynamics its thing since the start.
We're basically back at a Season One point where they need to re-establish the relationships between pairs of characters and that's kind of what they were doing here but the various storylines were all totally separate from one another, and the central conceit wasn't inherently funny. Episode probably needed more Jeff.
I hope we see more of Brie Larsen though. Also did Dan Harmon actually spoiler-not-spoiler the next season of Game of Thrones there? Like out of pure malevolence? I hope so.
Chang's dance at the end was awesome though, and I like what they're doing with Britta this season.

No, he was just making fun of Game of Thrones.

hmm. This is the second episode in a row in which Jeff was not a major player in the A-story. Wonder if that's what feels off.

Yeah but the last episode was entirely built around the Troy-Abed-Britta relationship that has been established for years, whereas I couldn't really get a handle on how Annie was supposed to be feeling about Buzz and vice-versa. Banks is great in this but his character still feels underwritten beyond the occasional glimpse of his family life, which is problematic given he's basically part of the group now.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 1 February 2014 14:59 (ten years ago) link
I have the opposite opinion of basically every single sentence in Matt DC's post. The show being obsessively devoted to hashing out the group's relationships became really tiresome after a while. They've amply demonstrated that they care about that stuff more than other sitcoms, at this point I'd rather them just keep trying to do funny new things with the characters they've got instead of laboring further over the THEMES and MYTHOLOGY. xp

It's part of what makes the show funny, things like Shirley constantly snipping at Britta.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 1 February 2014 15:08 (ten years ago) link
But they could stand to drop the "Jeff gives an inspiring speech at the end" thing, which is usually not funny and getting a little tired after overuse.

I was really glad that they finally brought back Rachel and there were some real lols in this last episode (and throughout this season). I kinda have a hard time with what the premise of the show even is at this point, though: this is probably obvious but they're really straining to justify a fifth year at community college with Jeff becoming a teacher and everyone else re-enrolling for the hell of it. As a result, a lot of these stories are hard for me to get behind. "Geothermal Escapism" seemed like a mishmash of ideas from the paintball and s2 Christmas episodes to me but made less sense than either of those. The school decided to officially devote itself to a game of Lava Wars because one student was leaving? Adult Swim territory imo - not a compliment. Still, I'm glad that it's watchable and sometimes funny again.

i remember harmon saying sometime during season two that their world would get larger each season so that by the time graduation or whatever loomed as a plot point it really wouldn't matter that much, the show would've outgrown campus by that point. i'm guessing budget issues changed that.
― balls, Sunday, 2 February 2014 01:38 (ten years ago) link
plus season 3 was probably a lesson in having too many characters - goodman and michael k williams underused while pierce and chang are walking hand in hand in a montage of doing nothing

it was somehow too many characters and too few in that weird way shows get where apparently the only ppl these characters know and interact w/ really are each other, everybody only knows four or five other ppl and those four or five other ppl only know each other and you, everybody lives on gilligan's isle.
― balls, Sunday, 2 February 2014 01:43 (ten years ago) link
i'm not shocked people aren't BEST YET over an episode with a "more than this" montage of unclear ironic distance.
I thought this was a pretty-funny reference to the Dean's observation that things were getting Sorkin-y.

Has anyone watched DH's cartoon? It's called "Rick and Morty" and is on Adult Swim, and episodes are about 10 minutes long. It follows a kid and his constantly drunk mad scientist grandfather, sort of feeling like a Family Guy take on Dr. Who or something. I enjoyed the a-story about the title characters, but the b-story is the mom and dad, the latter of whom acts like he is the most brilliant person in the world and just won't shut up and really drags the whole thing down.

I don't think I liked this episode as much as the reviewers, but this season has been astonishingly great. I love what they are doing with Buzz, Duncan and even Chang. At this point I want the rest of the original cast slowly phased out and the series continuing indefinitely with new characters, ER-style.

It was a good episode. I still miss troy. But they are doing something about that. The Chang plot was great, and the final visual gag.

Daaaark episode but I really enjoyed it, thought this one did all the character and relationship-building stuff the previous one should have. There's still loads of potential in building the Jeff and Duncan double-act.
Britta's character has been hard-done by in the last couple of seasons but they're doing great things with her this time round.
