Graham Lambkin & Jason Lescalleet - Photographs - Mentioned this on campaigning. So sad I'm the only one who voted for this.

this is like J0n Abb3y stuff that I tend to find overly precious and restrained. I've sat through a lot of music that has this aesthetic, or is along the lines of what these dudes do. I don't doubt it does what it does better than most music that is attempting the same thing(s). ... Hell, maybe I will give this a try after my Kanye listening marathon.

Keep meaning to listen to it cos truly i <3 the Shadow Ring

keiji cretins (NickB), Friday, 31 January 2014 22:12 (ten years ago) link

i would recommend my top two to anyone, tbh

nils frahm - spaces

wondrous live (or "live"?) album, a pretty mesmerizing combo of electronic and modern classical.

almunia - pulsar

remarkable blissed-out balearic summer driving mellow jams, soundtracked a lot of my pacific coast highway drives. also highly recommended is their 'new moon' LP.

I just heard nils frahm on the college radio station I listen to! It's quite nice!

Great ballot, Drugs A. Money. And not just because of similarities - the stuff we don't share was ace, too.

Did you hear this year's Call Back The Giants record at all?

ineloquentwow (Craigo Boingo), Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:37 (ten years ago) link

Alla just kind of slid off the end of my ballot at some point. Sorry. :(

raggett neds of your summer dress (The Reverend), Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:42 (ten years ago) link

I think more people would like that record if they heard it! Small timey Chicago r&b/??? outfit doesn't get a lot of words/screen inches ime. It was good!

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:54 (ten years ago) link

I liked their weird tropicalia phase a little better than this one, but I think this one has more crossover appeal.
I also feel like Drag City albums don't have a chance when spotify is the way most people listen to new/unfamiliar stuff. I voted for three albums on DC and none of them made a peep on the poll.

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:56 (ten years ago) link

Sarahell, re photographs, i'm obviously not as acquainted with music like this but for me it was a joy and a pleasure.

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Saturday, 1 February 2014 00:57 (ten years ago) link

I really have to ~get involved~ next year, going through now I'm seeing lots of albums I really liked and feel could have had a respectable top 150 showing not even nominated - Sachiko, Morphosis, Jenny Hval, The Pastels, would Peter Gordon & Factory Floor have been eligible? - and many others I could have pushed up a bit languishing in the deep 100s. I guess I assumed I was one enough with the ILM hivemind that my own take didn't make much difference.

What us the time travel thread about? I feel like I ought to know

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Saturday, 1 February 2014 01:12 (ten years ago) link

Time travel thread is about time travel. And whatever those of us who hang out there happen to think is worth posting. You'd enjoy it, I think.

Merdeyeux you should totally have voted! "Beachcombing" was the one track I couldn't quite will into the top 77 on my own.

the first cologne based on a sea-captain based celebrity (seandalai), Saturday, 1 February 2014 01:18 (ten years ago) link

oh I'd probably have voted for 'C Side' instead so even hypothetically vote-splitting would have left us heartbroken.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 1 February 2014 01:20 (ten years ago) link

I don't know anything about time travel unless you got some balloons or summin?

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Saturday, 1 February 2014 01:37 (ten years ago) link

Time travel is kind of rolling weirdo avantgarde stuff that kinda falls thru the cracks. Mostly presided over by imago, sarahell, Edward III, and Hellhouse

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 1 February 2014 02:01 (ten years ago) link

LL onlt thing on Drag City I listened to this year wz Howling Hex but Cave and that Dead C/Rangda split both sound like theyd be awesome and they're def high on my catch-up list

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 1 February 2014 02:03 (ten years ago) link

Will post about Alla on my next break

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 1 February 2014 02:04 (ten years ago) link

Not just though, I post random pop there sometimes. Always felt inclusivity was part of the founding vision xp

Oh I nearly a started a rolling avant weirdo thread but I had a feeling it existed but couldn't find it. You avant weirdos need to get more accessible or else how the heck am I gonna find you??

^intriguing ballot

Battles, "Atlas" 29 Carly Rae Jepsen, "Call Me Maybe" 14 (imago), Saturday, 1 February 2014 03:09 (ten years ago) link

If I'd got round to nomming The Pastels would've been my number two vote.

ineloquentwow (Craigo Boingo), Saturday, 1 February 2014 03:11 (ten years ago) link

I need to give that Troller album a listen here soon

I've yet to hear the first Alla album but from what I've gathered the references are Tropicalia, Krautrock, and even stuff like Tuxedomoon, and when I listen to FTD that's what I hear: a band from a spacey esoteric background immersing themselves in the surfaces and textures of modern R&B. It's almost like an Amon Duul II album but drawing on stuff like Katy B, Dawn Richard, and Sade instead of like, Jefferson Airplane and the Velvets and the Incredible String Band. And for a hopeless if not shameless rockist who was starting to hear the possibilities of modern pop and techno production, it came at exactly the right time. I think most of the R&B fans round here tend to be songwriting absolutists so in many ways like the Clipping album this kind of fit uncomfortably between two camps. But there was not another album this year I've listened to as much...

like helen money?

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Saturday, 1 February 2014 04:47 (ten years ago) link

Allá album is 1) something I was completely ignorant of and 2) pretty amazing. I think this is a legit authorized download link, so (unless it isn't) check it out here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/f2upt482897oys6/%23feedthedragon%20volume%20one.zip

I'm pretty sure I'm the one who nominated the La Big Vic album, so I should have voted for that too.

fffv, Saturday, 1 February 2014 05:34 (ten years ago) link

Haha nominations thread was the first inkling I had that La Big Vic had an album out this year

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 1 February 2014 07:07 (ten years ago) link

...so thanks!

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 1 February 2014 07:08 (ten years ago) link

this post is still messin with my head. i mean, i know why you used those two albums to gloat @ drake but what are you saying????

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 9 February 2014 07:28 (ten years ago) link

I think he's just saying that a huge blockbuster album that placed high on a lot of critics's lists was way down with some obscure records in this poll

scott c-word (some dude), Sunday, 9 February 2014 15:04 (ten years ago) link

Ok right on.

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 9 February 2014 19:43 (ten years ago) link

no reason to use those albums apart from they were near drake in the results, i'd never heard of either and they SOUNDED obscure, no idea what/who they even are and no shade at them intended

lex pretend, Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:00 (ten years ago) link

K, just the way you singled them out felt like you knew of them and were wielding them as shorthand for some context that I had no access to...
