This basic pair of uniqlo black jeans has been super durable and I question whether they are really made of cotton or not

, Thursday, 30 January 2014 23:56 (ten years ago) link

one year passes...

have any of you ever done the shrink to fit thing? any tips? does it work? for levi's, i'm thinking

i have a few pairs of 501s but damn if the fabric is not up to the role of being a jean. and/or the dimensions are just subtly off for my body. they fit just fine but the panels around each "quadrant" of the intersected seams at the crotch wear out in like less than a year. i've had a couple repaired and they still get shredded.

i feel like if i did this cowboy alchemy fit process, they wouldn't be stressed in this spot and would last longer. true? bullshit?

goole, Friday, 27 March 2015 19:30 (nine years ago) link

imo u shd try it an report back

lag∞n, Friday, 27 March 2015 19:31 (nine years ago) link

one wld think if u got the raw levis they wld at least last longer due to not being treated/stone washed/whatever

lag∞n, Friday, 27 March 2015 19:32 (nine years ago) link

personally ive just accepted that levis wear out fast, like they cost 1/3rd as much as some fancy selvedge and last one third as long its all part of the cycle of birth death and renewal

lag∞n, Friday, 27 March 2015 19:33 (nine years ago) link

Reinforce at-risk areas with suede patches imo.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 27 March 2015 19:51 (nine years ago) link

wld u do that prolifically inside the denim or cover the holes with it or what?

after just buying some levi's and paying only $30/pair on average this is how i feel too, it won't be a huge deal if need to buy another pair in a year or two

marcos, Friday, 27 March 2015 19:54 (nine years ago) link

I think the fashion forward thing to do is have it pre-emptively applied on top of the denim so the suede wears out first. Of course I never do this, instead I put the leather inside after there's already a hole, and machine-applique it into place.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 27 March 2015 19:55 (nine years ago) link

yeah i dont want no suede patches on the outside of my jeans

lag∞n, Friday, 27 March 2015 19:58 (nine years ago) link

Buy the heaviest weight denim you can find, like 20+ ounce

Then buy a wheelchair or segway to transport yourself around because you won't be able to move your legs

, Friday, 27 March 2015 20:00 (nine years ago) link

tbh goole i was strongly considering doing the levis shrink-to-fit 501s and even ordered a pair but i ended up with a few pairs of their other styles that fit me great immediately. i didn't trust the sizing estimates for buying STF 501s and didn't want to waste the money with a pair that didn't fit right after going through a whole tedious process.

lots of myths imo around "the perfect jean" that requires doing all kinds of silly things to get "the perfect fit" on a pair that "will last forever", idk maybe i just got lucky w/ the off-the-shelf pairs of the other levis or maybe they don't really fit me well and i'm just ignorant. anyways it just didn't seem worth the trouble. i am definitely not a jeans connoisseur though

marcos, Friday, 27 March 2015 20:10 (nine years ago) link

I think my permanent jean routine is going to Uniqlo or H&M and buying a pair that I will about 5 or 6 days out of the week until a hole develops in the bottom of my back pocket where the corner of my wallet is.

All of my jeans get holes here first :-/

Also fuck a front wallet so don't even try

Women's Levi's jeans are not cheap enough to consider them disposable like that! They're like $80! There are web sales sometimes, but then if you buy a different color than before and the fabric has 1% more or less spandex or w/e, suddenly they don't fit anymore.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Saturday, 28 March 2015 13:24 (nine years ago) link

^ this forever

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 28 March 2015 15:49 (nine years ago) link

I have made about 6 pairs of various fabrics of jeans based around a pair of old wranglers that wore out on me.
Probably need to try making another style of trouser so that i have a fresh perspective on things.
Think I might get the California pants pattern based ona pair of 19th century button fly trousers.

Stevolende, Saturday, 28 March 2015 16:24 (nine years ago) link

but yeah, if i were you i would try to find some lightly worn $200-$300 jeans (i would look for LVCs) for around $100 on ebay

Felt for the first time I needed better jeans, so I hunted a bit and I've just won a pair of 'only worn 3 times' Iron Heart 634s on ebay for less-than-half-price (quite lazily listed so it got no real action). A bit nervous - not many photos & I hope I've got the sizing right – but intrigued to try good denim for the first time.

woof, Saturday, 28 March 2015 18:56 (nine years ago) link

Actually what I tried to type was '16 pairs of jeans' made over the last year. They're not that difficult to do. Might be easier with a better sewing machine too.

Stevolende, Saturday, 28 March 2015 19:07 (nine years ago) link

i do shrink to fit 501s, one pair per year, they fit fine. they fade to a nice colour imo. they are cheap. there is some variation in how much i can get them to shrink, e.g. i got a pair of 1947s on sale and they barerly shrunk, but the regular line 501s shrink more. the +1" in the waist, +2-3" in the inseam rule of thumb is probably about right for those.

i destroy pockets before i destroy jeans themselves usually :(

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 30 March 2015 17:15 (nine years ago) link

u do the wearing them dry thing and all i think im gonna give it a try

lag∞n, Monday, 30 March 2015 17:15 (nine years ago) link

I was LEGIT DENIM MAN for a short period and also had some of the repro 1947 501s that I didn't wash for six months, then did a shrink-to-fit thing, and then washed again at some point and overshrunk them a bit. they were really too warm for the summer, especially pre-washing

now I gave up and have these super-comfortable uniqlo things that claim to be jeans but have space age materials in them and they're very comfortable and idgaf

mh, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 19:46 (nine years ago) link

I wear topman jeans almost exclusively, as I mentioned before anything else and I have loads of bulky fabric swimming around ankles. Quality is p good, I get about a year's wear out of a good pair.

I'd like to get into better denim but I suspect even the skinniest selvedge cuts would be way too wide for me, maybe acne studios or apc might have a thin enough cut.

Junior Dictionary (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:00 (nine years ago) link

theres hella skinny cuts 4 u out there

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:19 (nine years ago) link

im no skinny jeans expert as ive got huge sausage legs but these r v skinny http://uscheckout.apc.fr/browse.cfm/4,3381.html

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:28 (nine years ago) link

Prob still too big, it's not like I'm mega skinny generally, I just have fairly stick insect ankles and judging by the size of jeans, my thighs are skinny also, I reckon those apc jeans would be v sloppy on the ankles.

I wear topman super spray on and they just seem well fitting to me.

even when it looks on the model like they're skinny the jean will arrive and be flapping everywhere.

I could try women's jeans I guess, tho my waist is 32 so, shrug emoticon.

Junior Dictionary (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:32 (nine years ago) link

I prob could get jeans and get them shortened and tapered and the thigh might be fine, but off the peg I'm fighting a losing battle

Junior Dictionary (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:33 (nine years ago) link

they have very small leg openings!

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:34 (nine years ago) link

I prob should go try some on!

I got these recently and they were awful - http://www.mrporter.com/en-gb/mens/rag_and_bone/slim-fit-denim-jeans/492251

Has reinforced my fears, I returned them obviously.

although after looking at those acnes maybe this is might be worth a look

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:41 (nine years ago) link

it's prob a combo of short/skinny legs, the jeans will be too long and most are a little baggy so unless I am getting them retailored they will look shit from the shin down

or this might be one for my psychiatrist idk

You shouldn't get anything with the word 'slim cut' in them if you want skinnies

, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I know, they just looked skinny though in the pics. Slim is a word with a wide meaning in men's fashion, for every 40 you spend on trousers the cut gets wider.

I am p sure though that all slim jeans look shit on me, joking aside, think as I said, most are a bit too long but also baggy.

I wear these, like a 15 yr old emo, but I'm confident they look well: http://www.topman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33056&storeId=12555&productId=17435337&langId=-1&categoryId=&parent_category_rn=&searchTerm=TM69D12JBLK&resultCount=1&geoip=home

In summer I'll wear a slim chino cos rolling it up tidies up the lower leg. Trousers are just a prob for me.

Junior Dictionary (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:52 (nine years ago) link

see you're going to a place called topman for pants, you need bottomman

mh, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:54 (nine years ago) link

I go there for underwear but it's just not well fitting enough I'm afraid.

I just use a small piece of phone cable now, it's all that fits under those jeans.

Junior Dictionary (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:56 (nine years ago) link

xp went there once and found the salesppl to be extremely passive

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 2 April 2015 13:30 (nine years ago) link

they need some direction for sure

mh, Thursday, 2 April 2015 13:42 (nine years ago) link

hmmm... at W34, i think i'd feel pretty silly (and uncomfortable) wearing skinny jeans, but then i've never really tried wearing them. straight-legs feel pretty tight on me, but look baggier than i like or is fashionable.

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Thursday, 2 April 2015 14:07 (nine years ago) link

don't wear skinny jeans because my knots won't fit
