Michael Brough fans... how does 868-HACK compare to Zaga 33? I'm curious about 868 due to the love here, but I tried Zaga and never got into it.

http://indiestatik.com/2014/01/02/hoplite/
If you’ve played 868-HACK, you’ll notice quite a few similarities in Hoplite, even though the advantages that the combat system offers you against your enemies are practically inverted (considering the up-close/ranged attacks). Funnily enough, Hoplite was originally made during the same 7DRL (seven-day roguelike) game jam that Michael Brough’s 86856527 was, which he worked on after and brought to iOS (and other platforms soon) as 868-HACK.
i've been enjoying hoplite lately - it doesn't mess around with the in-game mechanics to nearly the extent 868-hack does, but the gameplay is very broadly in the same style, and it's very thoughtfully designed

the michael brough stuff looks so much like My Sort Of Thing
100 rogues is kind of annoyingly halfway to being a good game. it looks like the designer has played SHIREN THE WANDERER, the perfectly designed snes and later ds roguelike. the 'arcade' nature of it is feels a bit like that one, the idea that each new wave of levels includes a distinct set of attack patterns to think about.
and the idea that one ought to have a set of area control attacks to use is a good one. it just seems that that ought to replace the randomly-generated equipment etc rather than supplementing it, it feels a bit busy and half-designed. also i keep hitting the wrong square and i don't think i'm even having fat-handed twat issues.
also i thought there were literally 100 classes and that you unlocked them by completing the game, not that there were a dozen and you paid for them individually. not a fan of that, really. also why on earth does it have i. cutscenes ii. difficulty settings.
ziggurat was a really good value £0.59. i think it does most everything it sets out to do.

100 rogues is kind of annoyingly halfway to being a good game.
i feel the same way about a game near the top of the app store right now called Slayin. the basic game is decent - it's very simple, you just walk your character around a single screen, obliterating enemies with a single touch, every 10 enemies you kill gains you a level, every 10 levels there's a boss. there's a merchant that sometimes appears with armor/weapon upgrades, and coins you collect from enemies to spend at the merchant, and "fame" that you can use to buy other game-related items at the "tavern" after you die.
it's only 99 cents. so it's amazing that it feels like such a disappointing ripoff! it's like they put absolutely no time into tweaking the game to make it playable or interesting. the items that the merchant sells are always enticing, but the amount of coins you get before meeting him are never enough to afford the best items. then, after saving up all the coins you can and finding him again, the prices of all the best equipment go up so that once again you can't afford anything good. the game is designed so that you can only have the worst equipment, while seeing that better equipment is somehow available (maybe it's a meta-game that's trying to tell us something about the economy?). meanwhile, when you die and go thetavern, you can use all your saved fame to buy...different color schemes for the bottom half of the screen! two different character classes that both suck even more ass than the default character! or...custom gravestones that list your high score so you can e-share it with your friends and then cry later, alone! or you can use real life money to buy more fame to let you do these things!
they forgot to let you use your accumulated fame points to do the obvious thing that you want to do, which is buy better equipment or spells that you can use from the beginning.
anyway, if i ever have a kid and they're really smart and can do everything easily, but never really apply themselves or try very hard, i'm going to scold them by saying "you're like that old game Slayin. remember that game? yeah, it sucked really bad and i ended up deleting it even as i was writing a few short paragraphs about it on a messageboard, because i realized i would never, ever play it again. wait, where did you go son"

slayin is better than you give it credit for. its a real grind, but its all about learning to play it increasingly well, not about upgrading your character between runs. its more like super hexagon or something than an rpg tbh.

xpAmazing that something so inane could be so infuriating. Probably down to the anxiety of knowing that you're a slight twitch or screen obscuring notification away from losing at any point, plus the jarring effect of having to unlearn decades of positive associations with the green pipes in Mario games.
Got 65 then deleted the damn thing, simply isn't worth the stress.
