Wow this was great! Really amazing surprise ending. So good. Gonna miss Donald Glover on this show big time.

so basically it sounds like community's got a good chance of a sixth season if the network doesn't give up on a comedy night, as they're in the same boat as last year where they hate community/parksandrec numbers but the new shows bombed and at least they're syndication-ready and cult favorites. but if NBC gets the Thursday NFL package and/or cuts down their number of comedy spots even further, parks & rec is already basically renewed so community would probably get dropped.

xp actually not true at all, Troy. for shame!

Man, when Harmon writes Abed he is basically the most tragic character on television...

season 4 guys were so bad at getting abed this almost felt like showing off

A limey here. I am almost finished on Season 3 should I just skip Season 4 entirely?

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 26 January 2014 09:40 (ten years ago) link

Yep. The episode Jim Rash wrote was pretty good, but you're fine just hopping.

(D1CK$) (sic), Sunday, 26 January 2014 11:43 (ten years ago) link

If you're bored you can always go back, but you won't lose anything. Just know that Pierce leaves at the end of the season.

Nhex, Sunday, 26 January 2014 19:33 (ten years ago) link

Also, Troy and Britta were a couple, or at least they were when the storyline sort of called for it.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 26 January 2014 19:46 (ten years ago) link

i bailed after two episodes but from what i've heard they cashed in on some of the stuff harmon had spent years kinda building towards - troy and britta, jeff's dad - but didn't really do anything w/ it right?

balls, Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:16 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, the episode with Jeff's dad was one of the shittier ones, made moreso by the fact that his dad wasn't played by Bill Murray (who Harmon had envisioned for the role from the beginning).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:20 (ten years ago) link

yeah, but honestly they were never gonna get Bill Murray. has he done any TV in decades?

Nhex, Sunday, 26 January 2014 23:43 (ten years ago) link

troy and britta was the real waste, imo

Nhex, Sunday, 26 January 2014 23:43 (ten years ago) link

The Sophie B. Hawkins Dance episode was good too.

jmm, Monday, 27 January 2014 00:07 (ten years ago) link

oh yeah, how could i forget! Man, too bad due to the pattern of Abed's love interests, we'll never see Brie Larson again

Nhex, Monday, 27 January 2014 01:58 (ten years ago) link

the dance one was the only one i thought was up to old standards.

I want them to bring back Eliza Coupe

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Monday, 27 January 2014 07:43 (ten years ago) link

with Troy gone a string of romantic partners for Abed is surely the only way to go.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 27 January 2014 07:50 (ten years ago) link

The dance episode, and the Physical Education Education episode are both good, you can probably skip the rest.

The only thing that didn't really work with me about the last one was Abed thinking the lava was real. Kinda hoping we were done with 'Abed has weird visions' (and maybe we are now).

Matt DC, Monday, 27 January 2014 12:25 (ten years ago) link

not sure abed really thinks the lava is real so much as abed is willing to suspend his disbelief somewhat profoundly

Clay, Monday, 27 January 2014 12:39 (ten years ago) link

Just watched the first four episodes. Didn't much like the ass crack bandit one, other than that a total return to form. The gag density is almost of a peak era Simpsons level.

I prefer the gag density of the first two episodes to the conceptualnessness of the last three - the last one was fun and noisy but there weren't a lot of actual jokes. Overall back on second season form though (i liked the first season best).

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 27 January 2014 14:11 (ten years ago) link

Abed's Nic Cage freakout was the funniest thing I've seen for ages.

This show has it all: Roxy Music, two Labyrinth references, and the return of Brie Larson.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 31 January 2014 02:42 (ten years ago) link

i was so happy about that! it's like they answer my internet whining prayer above.

also, if they can keep Chang at this level for the rest of the season, I can almost forgive him for the last few years, he's tearing it up

Nhex, Friday, 31 January 2014 02:44 (ten years ago) link

Haha, yeah, when I saw her the first thing I thought was "Nhex will be so happy!"

otm re: Chang. I was a tiny bit worried when he started crying about the bear down bit, thinking he was hatching another scheme, but it worked out pretty brilliantly.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 31 January 2014 17:44 (ten years ago) link

this episode was pretty wonky in ways (i can now sympathize with people who weren't sure what was being parodied in the buttcheek coin-dropper ep), but I loved so many individual bits. My dream for this show was that it would just be left to its own devices on Fridays instead of being prepped for major crossover by a desperate network, and while season 3 & 4 obv suffered from issues with the latter, it seems like its finally being allowed to just be this endearingly weird novelty with no worries about emmys, ratings or cancellation.

da croupier, Friday, 31 January 2014 17:50 (ten years ago) link

thursday now being an even more pathetic night for nbc than friday

da croupier, Friday, 31 January 2014 17:51 (ten years ago) link

i really liked the feel of this episode, had some seriousness around the edges without a lot of shrill arguing like some episodes, and the characters were grouped together in ways that you don't usually see and some of them (Annie and Chang in particular) got out of their usual niches, and Abed was still Abed in a good way without Troy. i was mildly dreading an instant turn into "Abed misses Troy" plots.

some dude, Friday, 31 January 2014 17:58 (ten years ago) link

kinda weirded out by the lukewarm reaction i've seen to this episode, loved this episode and thought it was the first one this season that felt like it was doing something fresh instead of revisiting something that had worked in a better episode a previous season. sepinwall bitched that they didn't do anything w/ the guest stars or whatever (though man paget brewster and brie larson, these motherfuckers are reading my mind) but i thought the episode in general had a ton of hilarious lines. they did a good job of fat dogging for midterms imo.

balls, Friday, 31 January 2014 18:03 (ten years ago) link

also, again, and i'm probably gonna say this every week but jonathan banks is just killing it.

balls, Friday, 31 January 2014 18:05 (ten years ago) link

yeah it was our first glimpse of the post-troy/pierce show and that novelty was exciting and promising but i'm not shocked people aren't BEST YET over an episode with a "more than this" montage of unclear ironic distance.

da croupier, Friday, 31 January 2014 18:08 (ten years ago) link

oh and yeah SO GLAD this episode wasn't about troy at all - Suburgatory spent the first three episodes of this (Godawful so far) season having half the cast talk about how much they miss the guy who's on Enlisted now.

da croupier, Friday, 31 January 2014 18:12 (ten years ago) link

balls otm re: Banks. No weird adjustment period, dude just slotted right in.

I read some accusations of stunt casting wrt Nanjiani and Fillion, but they were both perfect, and didn't strike me as the least bit stunty.

"Daughter soccer. Got it."

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 31 January 2014 18:19 (ten years ago) link

i mean, it is "stuntcasting" in the sense that a bunch of recognizable actors with varying degrees of nerdlove zipped past us in the episode, but it's not like there wasn't an amusing plot w/ good dialogue they were taking part in.

da croupier, Friday, 31 January 2014 18:24 (ten years ago) link

kept thinking about tv shows within tv shows: an ocd thread for jaymc and nabisco because Nathan Fillion showed up in character a mere week after Chang yelled out the actor's name as his same sex celebrity crush.

some dude, Friday, 31 January 2014 18:25 (ten years ago) link

suburgatory :(

balls, Friday, 31 January 2014 18:32 (ten years ago) link

i'm actually quite impressed Banks is doing so well on this show, never would've thought him to be a good fit

don't forget Paget Brewster lol

Nhex, Friday, 31 January 2014 19:01 (ten years ago) link

my hopes weren't exactly high after omar never really paid off
