God, I had no idea there was an actual clip of that--fantastic. My assumption was always that they just dubbed in all the screaming from old Godzilla movies.

man, if he could somehow manage to pass Bonds (109 to go). The MLB "treatment" would be the funniest thing ever.

Alex Rodriguez retiring, taking position with Yankees

Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez will retire from baseball and take a job with the organization as a special advisor and instructor, the club announced.

He will play his final game on Friday, August 12, and sign a new contract to work with the club running through the 2017 season. He will report directly to owner Hal Steinbrenner, with his role starting in the 2017 season.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:42 (seven years ago) link

He said Steinbrenner reached out to him on Wednesday to begin discussing his transition. Rodriguez would not elaborate on details.

...“As far as milestones,” he said, “I would have had an unbelievable time trying to go after them...I would have had fun not only trying to hit home runs but help the team finish on a strong note. Those were not the cards I was dealt, and I’m at peace with the organization’s decision.”

literal retirement home

qualx, Monday, 15 August 2016 21:57 (seven years ago) link

Trying to figure out if Stanton's injury makes this more or less likely. Are they interested because they figure they're out of it and 700 home runs might sell some tickets (more likely now), or is it that they were thinking he might have made a difference in a close wild-card finish (less likely)?

clemenza, Monday, 15 August 2016 22:02 (seven years ago) link

Might put some butts in the seats. Might prove to be a useful bench bat. And the price is right.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 15 August 2016 23:22 (seven years ago) link

i can't imagine it'll put enough butts in seats to make up for the cost unless he agrees to the minimum

qualx, Monday, 15 August 2016 23:38 (seven years ago) link

I thought the Yankees were stuck paying him?

Looks like it might not be happening now anyways.

If the Yanks do cut A-Rod, how long till the Marlins sign him at league minimum?

― earlnash, Tuesday, August 2, 2016 5:06 PM (1 week ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

You just had to know if any club would want A-Rod, it would be the Fish.

earlnash, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 01:27 (seven years ago) link

Word is that he rejected an offer to sign with the Marlins and doesn't want to play anywhere for the rest of 2016. We'll see.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 07:10 (seven years ago) link

I don't understand his contract situation. He can sit out and get paid by the Yankees this year and next, but if he were to sign with another team (e.g. the Marlins), then he forfeits that money?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 13:52 (seven years ago) link

I assumed that any team would have to pick up his contract, but the espn article says A-Rod is "technically a free agent" which says to me that he can sign with who he wants and for how much he wants.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 16 August 2016 13:53 (seven years ago) link

So the "special advisor" thing with the Yankees is just smoke so everybody saves face?

After the loss of his original rider, Arod was given to Legolas by Éomer Éadig, in compensation for the supposed deaths of Merry and Pippin. Legolas ordered for his saddle and rein to be taken off, and rode him bareback with ease.[1]

This sounds like a Seinfeld plot, like we check in after the end of the weekend and George/A-Rod has written, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" and nothing else.
