Alex Rodriguez retiring, taking position with Yankees

Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez will retire from baseball and take a job with the organization as a special advisor and instructor, the club announced.

He will play his final game on Friday, August 12, and sign a new contract to work with the club running through the 2017 season. He will report directly to owner Hal Steinbrenner, with his role starting in the 2017 season.

He said Steinbrenner reached out to him on Wednesday to begin discussing his transition. Rodriguez would not elaborate on details.

...“As far as milestones,” he said, “I would have had an unbelievable time trying to go after them...I would have had fun not only trying to hit home runs but help the team finish on a strong note. Those were not the cards I was dealt, and I’m at peace with the organization’s decision.”

Trying to figure out if Stanton's injury makes this more or less likely. Are they interested because they figure they're out of it and 700 home runs might sell some tickets (more likely now), or is it that they were thinking he might have made a difference in a close wild-card finish (less likely)?

Might put some butts in the seats. Might prove to be a useful bench bat. And the price is right.

You just had to know if any club would want A-Rod, it would be the Fish.

Word is that he rejected an offer to sign with the Marlins and doesn't want to play anywhere for the rest of 2016. We'll see.

I don't understand his contract situation. He can sit out and get paid by the Yankees this year and next, but if he were to sign with another team (e.g. the Marlins), then he forfeits that money?

I assumed that any team would have to pick up his contract, but the espn article says A-Rod is "technically a free agent" which says to me that he can sign with who he wants and for how much he wants.

So the "special advisor" thing with the Yankees is just smoke so everybody saves face?

This sounds like a Seinfeld plot, like we check in after the end of the weekend and George/A-Rod has written, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" and nothing else.
