2014 please?

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:13 (ten years ago) link

ugh. i have a feeling we're going to have to wait for the confluence of D both being ready to let go of the record + being sober enough to do the promo and tour.

quest keeps getting my hopes up

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:21 (ten years ago) link

quest is 100 PERCENT on some "if i shame him about this enough in public maybe he'll be motivated to finish it up and get it out" shit

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:22 (ten years ago) link

has he said anything recently?

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:25 (ten years ago) link

i don't remember. but when they played brooklyn almost a year ago that was totally the vibe i got from quest.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:26 (ten years ago) link

they both said the album was done a year ago!

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:26 (ten years ago) link

quest said was 98% done when i saw them iirc

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:27 (ten years ago) link

close enough

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:28 (ten years ago) link

right, a year ago, i figured if quest has been silent since then we're in trouble. not to mention the cancelled shows and drug rumors. i'm still holding on to hope though.

close enough

haha

he's doing a poor job of shaming dangelo in that case (i dont think he is doing that in any case, i think hes too aware of dangelo's mental fragility, he doesnt want to upset things too much, beyond airing some frustration and playful digs about his career inertia - dangelo wont let the new record be heard until hes laboured it to death most likely)

the last paragraph seems especially bitchy (it's true I don't hear a lot of James or George in his music, but Sly definitely. Prince too)

four weeks pass...

Billboard a week ago:

In March of 2013, Liles told Billboard, "We're trying to finish the album. Right now we have 13 songs done, trying to think about the sequence of the album, mastering and mixing within the next two weeks, and release the thing. Ain't no question it's coming."

Judging by that tectonic pace, the album actually should be just about approximately almost 100 percent done right about now. Here's what Liles said:

"Here's the thing: with D'Angelo it was a process. He didn't perform for 10 years and he's been working on an album for the past 12 years. I actually got him to go out and do 30 shows (in 2011-2012), and then we did some 'Brothers in Arms' shows. I said, 'We have to get motivated around what people want to hear from you, and what does it mean to come back to that space?' He very bluntly put it, 'Kev, the studio and the stage: that's my lifeblood. Now that I've touched it again, now that I see it again, I wanna be sure that the baby I'm about to have -- the album -- that I take it to the point where it's all it can be.'

"There'll be an album this year: there's 14 records so far, we might have a couple of bonus records, but all the recording is basically done and we're mixing and mastering now. Definitely, he'll be back.

Claiming he has 14 records ready to go sort of undercuts even the modest claim that he even has one record ready to go.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 18:20 (nine years ago) link

"record" = song

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

yeah, usually modern industry guys say 'record' and mean song, not album.

some dude, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 18:22 (nine years ago) link

(that usage confused me when i first heard it but now i hear it all the time from people in the rap world)

xp

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 18:23 (nine years ago) link

Sorry, was confused, because he calls them songs earlier.

Anyway, not holding my breath.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 18:57 (nine years ago) link

lol yeah mixing and mastering only two weeks haha

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:02 (nine years ago) link

I hope he finishes the album and then keeps it to himself because it's too good and the world is not ready yet

Sufjan Grafton, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:05 (nine years ago) link

He means two weeks, total, not in a row. Like, one hour one week, three the next, third week off, one year off, two days in a row ...

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:28 (nine years ago) link

haha

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link

it's funny/sad that anybody involved with the project even tries to tell people how much is done anymore. i totally believe that there's probably a lot album-worthy music ready to go, but at this point they should realize that people are tired of promises and just want a single and a release date.

some dude, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

at brooklyn bowl a year ago quest was like "the album is 98% done!" but still literally made the crowd cheer as loud as possible so that d'angelo would understand how badly we wanted to hear the new album

it was kinda sad

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 21:02 (nine years ago) link

I wouldn't believe a release date.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Thursday, 26 June 2014 01:42 (nine years ago) link

yeah this has basically taken on mbv levels of trolling. if it shows up it shows up but i refuse to get my hopes up about anything until then.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Thursday, 26 June 2014 03:43 (nine years ago) link

IF his live shows are anything to go by he's become far more guitar oriented but its not clear that he has the chops to pull that off.

I'm guessing somewhere between discordant overkill and tepid disappointment, if anything does materialise.

tsrobodo, Thursday, 26 June 2014 07:56 (nine years ago) link

i haven't been mega-thrilled by the funk/go-go workouts that he seems to favor these days, i want to hear him go even further down the inward-looking close-mic'd quavering intensity of voodoo, where you feel like you're suspended in amniotic fluid or something

I’ve owned Brown Sugar for more than 20 years and I can’t remember a damn thing about it. Bought it after I’d got into Voodoo at uni. Played it a couple of times, didn’t click, been on a shelf ever since. I should do something about this, yeah?

is that a stones joke

Left, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:13 (two years ago) link

comparing drugs to women is always corny and problematic but i don't see what makes it that much worse than the rest of the album

Left, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:18 (two years ago) link

Not much worse, just that the best songs on there are better. Its melodically weak too. Instrumental is good though. Good to vibe to.

Back to black messiah though. Not to get all stevehoffman, but i I bought it on vinyl thinking that would be the perfect format but the CD seems to handle it better, esp 1000 deaths.

candyman, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:58 (two years ago) link

categorically disagree that the melody for brown sugar is weak. rhythm is as important to a melody as range and variation

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:01 (two years ago) link

it’s definitely true that d’s melodies grew much more complex by the time black messiah came around, hard to imagine “another life” appearing on either of the first two albums

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:02 (two years ago) link

does the organ/falsetto hook on BS count as part of the melody? i could listen to that all day

Left, Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:06 (two years ago) link

The hook is good, thats true, I was thinking of the verses.

"categorically disagree that the melody for brown sugar is weak. rhythm is as important to a melody as range and variation"

Thanks for your input. However I didn't comment on the rhythm, I commented on the tunefulness, specifically the verses. To compare to another rnb weed song, its hardly Mary Jane by Rick james.

Seriously can't believe the lack of mentions for Voodoo when discussing D'Angelo's finest piece. It captured something culturally as well as musically which I don't think the others did in the same way. It's his defining statement in my opinion.

Wow, 9.5 minutes. I was listening without looking and thought it was a nice tune about to end, and then there was Jay talking and 5+ min of strings and guitar vamping. Happy to hear anything though, sounds like something that would be on a Badu album, or a lost P Funk jam. Sounds Questlove on drums, ofc.
