don't u mean Labi Saffire's "It must Be Love" ?

Can you YSI it? Gmail? Pigeon carrier? Sublimate?

Plus-Tech Whiz Kid (Disco) (Barima), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the idea of Gorillaz switching producers every time, and becoming Damon's producer subsidy project.

Gorillaz had to have raked in a lot of cash for the automator, and I bet this one will do the same for Dangermouse.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Is Damon really the head honcho in all this? Even the songs that don't have his vocals?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 18 April 2005 21:49 (eighteen years ago) link

album of the year so far for me. *hated* the first lp.
listened to this 10 times in 24 hours. 'dirty harry' and 'last living souls' - fantastic.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 10:24 (eighteen years ago) link

hated what gorillaz i had heard so far and hated the whole concept really... but i heard this on a long car journey yesterday and thought it was *GREAT*, i'm rather shocked.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 10:31 (eighteen years ago) link

There's too much atmosphere on this one and the beats are too soft compared to the first one, which tended towards the silly (in a good way). Damon shouldn't have let Dan take Koala away with him. It's still a good record.
the reviews are *unanimously* posttive everywhere.

SPOILER ! :

the bit where martina topley bird comes in on 'all alone' must rank as one of the most heart-stopping surprises on a record in living memory. like so much of the lp it really shouldn't work but just...does.

it's redefining the term 'eclectic' for me too.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 12:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I made a friend listen to that same part this weekend! When the breakbeat starts in right after her bit it really blends back into the song. I think a lot of the songs would seem really piecemeal if the transitions were less solid.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Not sure yet - a lot of it reminds me of Think Tank.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:48 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah me too.

it's weird, the songs never feel like they're going to fall apart any minute, but when you listen you're sort of thinking
'how is this hanging together so well?'

piscesboy, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I heard a good chunk of it last week via a friend and I was having too much fun creating fake Damon lyrics as the songs happened to pay much attention to the music. It sounded vaguely pleasant.

"And I'm balding/and I wish I wasn't/Oh Justine, if only/Hmmm hmmm where is Graham?"

new video for single with Shaun Ryder (ie the obviously great DARE track.. )

huge fun.

The track reminds me of Playgroup. The video is kinda terrifying (Ryder's head, he is exactly like Darth Vader with his helmet off at the end of Return Of The Jedi).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 15:17 (eighteen years ago) link

The DFA has done a remix.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:15 (eighteen years ago) link

This has made my day- "DARE" is my favorite track from the album, and a fantastic single pick, and a DFA remix too?! Oh man.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:07 (eighteen years ago) link

That Sean Ryder/Darth Vader Thing is so OTM.

I find it kind of funny that the songs with less albarn are being released as singles.

That One Guy (That One Guy), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:10 (eighteen years ago) link

could someone please post it up again

Jezza, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 07:31 (eighteen years ago) link

it disturbs me that one of my favourite singles of the year, 'dare', has people who i liked ten years ago.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 09:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Soulwax has also a remix. I've yet to hear either.

4.Stylo (featuring Bruce Willis)

"Some grizzled old piratey-looking guy"

The Broken Brothers, Friday, 15 January 2010 17:26 (fourteen years ago) link

".. Bruce Willis."

i guess a la dennis hopper doing a monologue.
at least i hope so.
not got much hope for this to be honest.
i think its easy to figure out why i loved the 1st and 2nd albums (the excess of jamie h art in the books/videos etc being the main pull for me).
i have read in recent times that jamie has been heard to say how he never wants to draw the characters again, so i'm a little concerned this new phase will have none of the same humour/inventiveness to make me reach for my wallet.
even the leaked album art looks, umm, nothing special (though its an early leak, so could easily change).
i (as do emi if they release this, as 'monkey' went to XL after some legal hiccup) hope i'm wrong ..

7.Pirate Ship (featuring Mark E Smith and Einar Örn Benediktsson)

Mark E Smith and Einar on the same song? This is either going to be genius, or something that you play loudly at parties to see who leaves

mh, Friday, 15 January 2010 18:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Well, hopefully both

Sammo Hungover (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 17 January 2010 18:08 (fourteen years ago) link

The Horrors are a very good band these days, live and on record

You might be right but in my head they're the goth Primal Scream so No Sale.

Sammo Hungover (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 17 January 2010 18:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Is it bad that you might have just sold them to me as "the goth Primal Scream?"

mh, Monday, 18 January 2010 16:08 (fourteen years ago) link

hey, it's not a moral judgement, if that floats your boat

i was wondering about this.
the promo machine so far has not mentioned his presence, and you'd think they would if he was still involved.

Really surprised by how much I like this new one, I dig the melancholy vibe through most of it. That last one had higher peaks, but this might be my favorite front to back Gorillaz since Plastic Beach (which I guess isn't saying much considering how blah I've found most of them to be).
