(i thought about calling it "love stepping out" but a. i don't and b. "technicolor" seemed more open ended)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 04:38 (twenty years ago) link

you coulda called it technicolor yawn

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 04:44 (twenty years ago) link

just kiddin

When DI Go Pop came out on Bar None I was in college and the Wire went on about it and people at my college(oberlin) all got very excited about it, so Disco Inferno have big following amongst our ilk. I've met a few others equally obsessed. I always saw them as some kind of digital This Heat, like doing with samplers what This Heat did with tapes, and mixing the avant with the pop.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 05:49 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't realize In Debt went out of print so quickly. I bought a new (Ché) copy from a Richmond record store in like 2001 -- God it must've been sitting on the shelves for years! Still working on Technicolour and the individual EPs -- I'm not exactly super-scrounging (not really my style), but my eyes and ears are *always* perked for them.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 14 January 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago) link

Oh my. Oh god. Oh wow.
Ned, is it too late to request one of your wonderful cds, hmm?

oliver craner, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 19:53 (twenty years ago) link

Of course it's not too late. This is a permanent standing offer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 20:15 (twenty years ago) link

Technicolour is the least interesting DI album for me as well. It doesn't measure up to the glory that is In Debt and the EPs. Even DI Go Pop aren't as good as the EP releases. Eventually this stuff will all get a decent remastering and rerelease, hopefully. I was not bowled over by Crause's solo EPs.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

Vinita at Rocket Girl told me she was able to secure the rights to the Che stuff, including "Summer's Last Sound/Love Stepping Out," but that Rough Trade still has all the rights to the other EPs. Hrm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 20:23 (twenty years ago) link

haha, listening to this now maybe i was a touch hasty. would it be cheeky for me to ask you extend your offer to me too, ned? :)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:16 (twenty years ago) link

No, no, Cozen! You *hate* the stupid Disco Inferno music, and you give the Technicolour CD to meeeee, you see?

Clarke B., Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago) link

I was hoping Cozen would see the light!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:28 (twenty years ago) link

oh i just copied it onto my hard-drive but stupidly i said to my friend who asked why i wanted to listen to it again 'um, my friend says it's the 'best album ever made'' and now he wants a re-listen. if he doesn't like, and i don't think he will, i think we can swing it. a copy is easily doable but i'm sure you'd prefer the cd, which i'm willing to part w. even if i do like it.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:34 (twenty years ago) link

[sigh of relief] -- Seriously though, Cozen, that's super-kind of you, and I appreciate the effort a ton.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:11 (twenty years ago) link

can anyone do a CD80 list?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:14 (twenty years ago) link

I was not bowled over by Crause's solo EPs.

interesting, because i like them both the best out of all his stuff. but then it is pretty much as indiepop as you're going to get.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:24 (twenty years ago) link

I was hoping Cozen would see the light!

It is glorious. :-)

can anyone do a CD80 list?

Er um uh. That would require me looking up exact times and I'm lazy right now. But let's assume this:

Emigre
Waking Up
Fallen Down the Wire
Summer's Last Sound
Love Stepping Out
From the Devil to the Deep Blue Sea (or whichever one on that single is the one starting with that sudden abrupt beginning)
The Last Dance
DI Go Pop
In Sharky Water
New Clothes for the New World
Starbound: All Burnt Out and Nowhere to Go
Even the Sea Sides Against Us
Second Language
At the End of the Line
It's a Kid's World
Lost in Fog

...for now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:52 (twenty years ago) link

would it be cheeky for me to ask you extend your offer to me too, ned? :)

Oh right, forgot to respond to this. Yes, drop me a line.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 03:09 (twenty years ago) link

My CDR of the EPs runs like this...

1. From The Devil To The Deep Blue Sea
2. The Last Dance
3. D.I. Go Pop
4. Love Stepping Out
5. It’s A Kid’s World
6. The Atheist’s Burden
7. At The End Of The Line
8. Summer’s Last Sound
9. A Little Something
10. Lost In Fog
11. A Night On The Tiles
12. The Long Dance
13. A Rock To Cling To
14. Second Language
15. Scattered Showers

It has a lovely flow to it. Or something. I even made my own cover with a picture I'd taken of some red&blue fireworks. Rar!

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 January 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago) link

Very nice, that. I myself am a slave to chronology.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 January 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago) link

I'm a shameless rockist at heart. Everythign has to have a 'flow', as if it were a real album.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:07 (twenty years ago) link

MADMAN

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

I know.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago) link

I like Technicolor the best of their records cos it is DI actually going pop!

When I saw them live just before they split up they were doing a song called "Karate" - I wonder if this ever surfaced under another name? I can't remember anything about it other than it being fantastic - nothing they were playing that night sounded remotely like anything on either DI Go Pop or Technicolor. (It sounded better actually.)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 18 January 2004 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

Tom you shouldn't be allowed to say things like that.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 January 2004 19:55 (twenty years ago) link

I wasn't even that drunk when they were playing (later on that night, my goodness yes, so I can't remember any of the very interesting things Krause was telling me about the stuff they were writing, he wanted it to be like the Beach Boys as I recall). I think what it was was that they were doing DI Go Pop style things but had learned how to make them really sound good live whereas on that album the samples and the song-actions triggering the samples (strumming etc.) have always sounded quite separate to me. Like there were 'songs' there which were having to fight against the crushing backdrop of samples - very effective in its own way, but the stuff I heard live that evening sounded like Krause etc. had managed to work out how to use the triggering-effects to form hooks in their own right, so you were hearing stuff that had the structure and impact of really good, hooky pop while actually sounding like nothing on earth. When Technicolor came out it was a little closer to that but IIRC most of their equipment had been nicked and theyd been forced to do a much less dense and more song-based record than they had originally intended. That might have been post-facto justification, I don't know. Or it might have been that they were just amazing live!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 18 January 2004 20:07 (twenty years ago) link

See? You've really pissed me off now.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 January 2004 20:08 (twenty years ago) link

Don't let hate overcome you, Kcin. I've had to resign myself to the fact I could never have seen that show for years now!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 January 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago) link

Please, call me Llahtuos; there's no need for formalities here.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 January 2004 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

Okay, prepping up the latest batches of burns -- for Cozen, Oliver and Dan Selzer. Anyone else?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 31 January 2004 23:59 (twenty years ago) link

Erm, I don't want to impose, but I would like to be added if possible (I am in the UK), as I really want to hear this band... (I never have, bizarrely) :)

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 1 February 2004 02:44 (twenty years ago) link

No worries, drop me a line to my e-mail with your mailing address and I'll burn ya up a copy tonight.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:28 (twenty years ago) link

If I asked for the same deal as Tom May, is there anything you want in return? Bearing in mind that a) I'm in Ghana and b) am shit at anything to do withh postage and repaying kindness.

Barima (Barima), Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago) link

hey, ned, if you could see your way to slipping two to cozen then, perhaps, he could carry one of them around until I stumble upon him at another hipstermania night out and he could give me that one and keep the other one for himself.

I mean, could you send an extra one to cozen that he could pass on, to me, ned?

thanks a lot!!

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 1 February 2004 22:15 (twenty years ago) link

It can be done, RJG. Barima, shoot me your address plz.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago) link

'hipstermania'!!! haha

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:46 (twenty years ago) link

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks Ned, super generous of ya.

Yez is welcome.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:17 (twenty years ago) link

I bought In Debt on Ebay today. Haven't found DI Go Pop yet, but I'm a-lookin'.

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 2 February 2004 00:26 (twenty years ago) link

One for me too, please Ned! I'll send you an email.

Bill E (bill_e), Monday, 2 February 2004 01:01 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks! I'll probably have to stop this for the moment, but next month I can get a new batch ready, so if anyone comes across this a bit late, patience. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 01:30 (twenty years ago) link

Anyway, this latest batch of CDRs is now out in the mail so everyone should hopefully get theirs soon -- everything was done air mail and it was pretty cheap, rah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago) link

i still can't believe it, but i ordered a copy of technicolour from one of those dodgy import houses off amazon.com marketplace and they actually had a copy and sent it to me!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 2 February 2004 21:28 (twenty years ago) link

thanks a lot, ned!

thanks, cozen.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:11 (twenty years ago) link

...i just wanna thank ned for making the cdr available! makes a great soundtrack for an evening stroll .

william (william), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:48 (twenty years ago) link

:-) Glad you liked it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:52 (twenty years ago) link

I'd ask you for one of those CDRs Ned, but my system won't play 'em. Stupid machine...

Still, they'll be re-released one day won't they? I mean, there is a God isn't there?

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:59 (twenty years ago) link

How sucky! Here's the breakdown rerelease-wise -- as I muttered above, the rights to "Summer's Last Sound/Love Stepping Out" EP, as well as the earlier songs on In Debt, now belong to Vinita at Rocket Girl, who is considering what to do with them. The four EPs that followed, though, were all on Rough Trade, so should Mr. Travis and company want to put together something, that would be nice.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:01 (twenty years ago) link

I saw this post Ned shared on FB about OLI fucking over A.R. Kane, and that the vinyl re-issue of '69' is ripped from a CD. Does anyone know about D.I's relationship with OLI, or the provenance of the vinyl re-ish?

https://www.facebook.com/arkaneuk/posts/1575310215879208

@olirecords claim to have purchased our entire catalog from @RoughTradeRecs for a few pennies, in perpetuity, w'out our consent knowledge - they refuse to let the rights revert to the band - not so much #MeToo more #MyArtToo #ArtisticSlavery U ever had a powerful label rip u off?

mor frog bs (S-), Thursday, 18 January 2018 01:25 (six years ago) link

Ugh about A.R.Kane and OLI.

I've not had the time to listen to the LP yet, on the weekend perhaps.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 18 January 2018 10:51 (six years ago) link

OLI seemingly bought up the rights to a job lot of rough trade stuff some years back
