i'm down the raritan valley line from newark... i can generally get into newark penn fine with the PATH but there aren't any trains from newark to home until 5 or 6am and i know from being stranded there before that the station police don't look kindly upon drunks

but yeah, i'd probably be taking the PATH in

come earlier, have some beers and shots, and take off whenever you need to!

this could easily be me if i hang out with you guys because i have no way of getting back to nj after 2am or so and very few places to stay in nyc

Right, I understand NJT. Well, the 2/3 DOES go to Chambers St, so you can walk over from the WTC Path train easily from there and catch the 2/3 to Bergen St. (not far from the bar in question). Works out all right, all things considered. Have to keep an eye on the clock, that's all.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Can someone post a googlemaps link to this bar?

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:25 (eighteen years ago) link

xp haha sorry jon, no

but yeah, i'm guessing i'd probably come earlier, then try to meet up with one of my nyc friends from school to drink more and convince them to let me stay over. or just leave early and go home while the NJT trains are still running if worst comes to worst

how's 7:30 for a rough-estimate start time? that would give people a chance to grab a slice after work, figure out train business, etc.

like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

That would be fine for me; I'll be a few later as I work in a coal mine and need to shower.

nervous, if your friend falls through, i'd be more than happy to supply you with a place to crash for the night. i know well the horrors of having to catch the $40 cab from newark late at night because i missed the last train out, so i sympathize. the raritan valley line, she is a CRUEL MISTRESS.

though fwiw i'm not sure i can actually attend this FAP. but let me know anyway.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 1 December 2005 00:38 (eighteen years ago) link

oh awesome, thanks

i shd probably swap cell phone numbers with a few of the people who are planning on attending, because i highly anticipate getting lost or confused

nervous (cochere), Thursday, 1 December 2005 00:42 (eighteen years ago) link

actually unless this goes well past 10:30, i know for a fact i can't make it. my offer still stands anyway.

i'm wondering if the bar jon's talking about upthread isn't the bar i (used to?) DJ at. i have no idea if the dude who bartends on mondays likes "alex in nyc"-type music, but everything else you said pretty much applies.

Happy Birthday JBR! I am not going to be able to make it. I leave work relatively late and as you probably know, Williamsburg to other parts of Brooklyn is not fun.

I leave work relatively late and as you probably know, Williamsburg to other parts of Brooklyn is not fun.

i usually take the bus (the 61, right? i forget) from downtown brooklyn -> wburg, and it's smooth sailing. the subway is a nightmare however. cabs, god love 'em.

oh actually i just realized too that i have to see my friend's band at Mercury lounge that night (deadly snakes) i think they go on next to last so maybe I can catch an F train after that or something and stop by for one drink.

i, too, like the idea of rock n roll leading to an irish bar with a fantastic jukebox. i've been avoiding this thread all week because i r being busy, but i like o'connor's and i love music, so it seems like a match made in heaven. even though the new facade on o'connor's is the suck!!

also, i'd like to see carey have just one drink, heh.

This seems a good a place as any to ask.

Anyone know any good karaoke places in Williamsburg or Manhattan (LES/WV/EV)? I have friends who want to go this Saturday. If any ILXors comes, they get to see me sing a duet of Journey.

there's an ok place on st. marks, and it has private rooms, but i like this one place on 34th street better (it's on the 7th floor of this building).

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Yea, I am a bit leary of the place on St. Marks but it is good to know it has private rooms.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:15 (eighteen years ago) link

there's a sushi place on the lower east side, can't remember the name, they do 2-for-1 rolls all the time, and they have a big karaoke room in the back with flashing lights, etc that they let you book for free as long as you spend at least $200 .. i'll try to remember the name of it

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

my recommendation is to find a place in koreatown and smuggle in your own booze.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:34 (eighteen years ago) link

the place we always used is mbc (or mdc) studios. it usually ended up being about $12 per person per hour for a room.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I went to a surprising place in Chinatown (WInnie's??) where the hostess would accompnay you on request, which was kind of charming, but they had a two-drink minimum and were military about enforcing it. And there weren't private rooms.

Otherwise Village Karaoke is easy, or Planet Rose on 13th and A is all right but again, yer doing your warbling in public. I'm SURE there are swank joints in K-town as Stence suggested -- and there must be two dozen places to choose from, the signs are right on the sidewalk! Some also have individual rooms set up for Pump, the Korean DDR variant, which is never NOT fun.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:47 (eighteen years ago) link

i've had lots of fun at winnie's over the years but in addition to the kind of weak and pricey drinks, you have to pay at least a dollar per song (which you give when you hand in your request) and accusations of the hostess favoring certain customers are always rife. one of my friends, now a singer for a reasonably well-known band, was asked to leave one night after making a huge fuss when "whip it" never came up in the rota.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:01 (eighteen years ago) link

some places may be crowded on saturday. i know there is one or 2 places in w'burg but i think they have karaoke on weeknights. village karaoke is prolly the way to go on saturday so you don't have to listen to serious karaoke'ers. there is a place called orange valve down the street from village karaoke that has karaoke in the basement/rumpus room and a 2 drink minimum. we had a fap there once and it was pretty good.

i do not like to drive and then drink and then drive. HSTENCIL.
