If I Recall Correctly

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:23 (nineteen years ago) link

The only thing I don't get is "grebt," I guess.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:24 (nineteen years ago) link

IIRC There's an interesting story behind that...

Masked Gazza, Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:27 (nineteen years ago) link

oh it's not that grebt.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:29 (nineteen years ago) link

That always confused me too. I wasn't sure what it meant, at first I thought it was a perversion of "grabbed" or "crept", i.e. "I grebt her arse" or "Roxymuzak grebt in through the window" or "Ned grebt up behind me and grebt my arse" and so on.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:31 (nineteen years ago) link

C-Man = example of cool, witty, funny ILXor. Most postees post on C-Man threads because they are invariably the most interesting.

Ned = example of uncool, unwitty, unfunny, ILXor. Ned has probably not had as much impact on ILX as C-Man.

C-Man (C-Man), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:34 (nineteen years ago) link

"Ned grebt up behind me and grebt my arse"

CAD.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, but why and what's the origin?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I mean, ok. I'm gonna start spelling people "popple" instead. Maybe that will catch on. WTF?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:10 (nineteen years ago) link

SOME THINGS JUST ARE, OKAY?!?!?!

I'm sorry, I don't know why I did that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Hold the phone. That's actually an excellent idea.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Shouting loudly?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:12 (nineteen years ago) link

And what does ILX mean?
I know it's I Love X, but you know, what does it all mean, what does it signify?

Bumfluff, Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Sorta double reference -- 'roxor' and similar hacker speak influenced the name of the board, but 'x' also acts as something of a general value signifier in math (and maybe logic as well?). Since there were two chief boards by the time a unique server was setup, the idea was that this encompassed both of them and all the other ones as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Can ILG be I Love Gingerbread?

weather1ngda1eson (Brian), Sunday, 25 July 2004 05:30 (nineteen years ago) link

roxy i believe the story behind "grebt" involves someone getting a txt message from a friend that described some sex act as "grebt" (typo).

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Sunday, 25 July 2004 06:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Grebt = Filking
(that ought to put a stop to it)

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:44 (nineteen years ago) link

i've never liked grebt. 'rub' has finally won me over tho.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 13:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Remember when "bingo!" still was just another innocent expression?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 25 July 2004 13:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Etymology of "grebt"?

first actual appearance of grebt:

Sex toys

(yes, i'm avoiding work again.)

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 25 July 2004 14:46 (nineteen years ago) link

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 16:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe I'm being too literal but Jesus, Pontius Pilate, etc. is New Testament, not Old Testament.
