You going on a date? :)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:23 (eighteen years ago) link

that should have said 'some more restaurnat ideas'. No, no such luck But some of my top matches are Finning so I thought it would be worth a try.

There's quite a wind chill this morning. I hope this doesn't make walking around later unpleasant or undooable.

A conversational theme seems to be, 'Good job you weren't here on Sunday, it was -22'

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:26 (eighteen years ago) link

What's her (his?) username? ;)

Haha, be glad you didn't come here last week, we had minus 20 degrees Celsius then. This is mild.

Haha, yeah, complaining about the weather is a favourite Finnish pastime. It's never good.

I know her! Very well actually. I think she's spoken for these days or something though. Did you ask to meet her?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:36 (eighteen years ago) link

no, I would have felt very sleazy aksing a girl out whilst passing through on a business trip.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I haven't spoken with her for a while, but if you want to go out tomorrow evening, I guess I could ask if she'd up for a pint or something.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:42 (eighteen years ago) link

"she'd be"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 07:43 (eighteen years ago) link

OK

Definately up for tomorrow evening. The more the merrier I say.

Now if only I had clicked on the comment maker's linka at the bottom of the profile, everything would have become clear.

Will you be back by my housewarming, Ed? (29th January)

You still haven't given me mine peppermint crisps!

Trying To Resonate Concrete (kate), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 14:41 (eighteen years ago) link

That second girl Robyn linked to: I think Dalmatians would suit me

Is she Cruella de Vil?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 14:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, Kate. (I will be in between trips).

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Come to my housewarming, then! Peppermint Crisps will be a perfect way to add a South African flavour to Burns Night/Chinese New Year for mine own particular heritage.

I want to paint mine new flat that colour, but I think it would be quite difficult to say "I want to paint my house the colour of a Finnish sunset...."

It's having a new camera and one that I actually like using.

I would like to have Helsinki city council for having a design of park waste bin that allows me to use a mini tripod on top of them.

Awww, trams! How lovely!

Also, this looks like what we were describing, as the fantasy of Cross Country Skiing:

I was in Helsinki for a couple of days over the summer with lovely weather and enjoyed it very much - tho beware the hidden threat of liquorice flavoured ice cream!! it looks like chocolate on the illustrated board by the ice cream kiosk!

Mark C (Markco), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Oy! Finns have got me drunk and I have to be up in a very few hours .

Ed (dali), Thursday, 26 January 2006 00:09 (eighteen years ago) link

I hope you managed to make it to your flight in one piece, Ed. I at least felt awfully hungover this morning, I had a massive headache. I guess our pub tour took a bit longer than I expected. But I had fun, hope you enjoyed it too. Now, if only I can survive this day...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 09:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I made my flight. I too have a stinking hangover. I curse you all. I curse jenni especially for introducing me to that vile salty liquorice drink.

Seriously lovely evening. I can't think of a better way it could have gone. Borscht, shouty drunk russians, pub quiz, charlie parker on the jukebox. Thanks to you all.

The salty liqourice stuff is something every true Finn is supposed to love, but I hate it! I guess I'm a fake or something.

Until I saw that photo I'd totally forgotten we actually danced in that bloody ten square meter pub! I must've been rather pissed by then.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 11:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Ed, you have found your Finnish manesake!

I am very jealous, it looks like you had so much fun. Are Tuomas and all his friends as cute in person as they look in photos?

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:05 (eighteen years ago) link

"Manesake"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:09 (eighteen years ago) link

manesake = person with the same hair (mane)!

Like namesake = person with the same name

Looks like one of your friends has long, blond dreadlocks in the photo above (though in the other photos, his hair is not as long as Ed's, but still.)

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I was saying to Ed before we met him that I know one other engineer with dreadlocks, and we're going to see him soon. Or an engineer student, to be true, He also studies philosophy, he was reading aloud stuff by of some Ancient Greek philosopher.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't mane what horses have? Or can a person have it too?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Lions have manes, horses have manes, people with long hair have manes. (I think it means more person with long, flowing hair that is *like* the mane of an animal, but it can mean human hair.)

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes they are all very cute in person.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 26 January 2006 12:21 (eighteen years ago) link

ed used to literally have a long blond mane, before it got twisted. he looked like a lion. i would show evidence if i had any to hand.

Anyone passing through Helsinki between now and august this year should take a look at ARS06 at the Kiasma art gallery. SO much great stuff and so little time to see it. I don't think I've been to a group show with so many works I've liked.

Particularly good were AES-F's huge digital painting called 'The Last Riot'. Hyper sexualised teens fighting each other with samurai swords and big pink Missiles; Charles Sandision's big text projections, letters and words coalesing into images etc.; Kalleinen and Kochta-Kalleinen's 'Complaints Choir of Birmingham'; Martin and Munoz's Snow Domes; Mariele Neudecker's wierd mountains in fish tanks; The crazy moving floor room by I forget whom. Loads of other great stuff as well. Looking forward to going back.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 27 January 2006 12:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, the ARS exhbitions have usually been rather good, it's Finland's biggest exhibition of contemporary art and it's only held in every five years or so. I remember going to see the ARS95 as a tender 15-year old still quite critical of "modern" art, and it totally blew my mind.

one year passes...
I think I'm in love with this city. I took a nice long walk around today. Starting at the train station, I went across and down the esplenade, then over to Uudenmaankatu, across and all the way down Eerikinkatu (thanks to this thread), along the water, back up Merimiehenk, Albertsgatan, and Iso Roobertinkkatu. This had to be my favorite neighborhood (so far). I loved the shops and feel of the streets. How about that bookstore with all the rock biographies? After that I walked to the Kanavaranta, and then into the Kruununhaka. That neighborhood reminded me of San Francisco, actually: water nearby, trams and six story apartment blocks. Then back to the train station and the hotel. Now I've drank enough wine that I can accurately reflect. Maybe.

Okay I don't have answers (why would I) but questions:

-have I been to the most interesting neighbourhood in town (Punavuori)? I'm talking record stores, book stores, places to stay warm, galleries, design studios, etc.

-what's up with the double names?

-what are the most notable buildings of 20th century design in Helsinki? I've looked through Alvar Aalto's works, and at least in pictures, they're not doing much for me. It's looking like the interior of the academic bookshop is most interesting. at least that's what GIS is telling me.

-why am i not surprised that the girls are v v pretty?

jergïns, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

last question (for now). I walked by this place today on Iso Roobertinkatu. Do I want to know what they sell?

plz let me take back what i said about Aalto. I went to Finlandia and walked around the outside and was stunned. what a gorgeous exterior. i posted a picture at the bottom of this thread

I sent you mail, Ed.

-have I been to the most interesting neighbourhood in town (Punavuori)? I'm talking record stores, book stores, places to stay warm, galleries, design studios, etc.

Yeah, for those things the Kamppi-Punavuori area is certainly the best place to go. But for nightlife and general feel I find it kinda posh. Personally I prefer Kallio, which is a more bohemian district, though to some folks it might be a bit too dirty and full of alcoholics and junkies. Each according to his taste.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Each according to his taste.

how Scandinavian

gabbneb, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Jergins, the place in the picture is a night grill which sells hamburgers and stuff (they're common here, people go there once the pubs close). Though this one is ran by some Jesus folks (Tuomas refers to the biblical Thomas), from what I've heard they also hand out Christian tracts.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I am here and it is delightful.

What are you up to in Helsinki, are you staying here for long?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 10 July 2019 14:37 (four years ago) link

Hi Tuomas!! I just got here last night and am here until Saturday morning. My wife and I went to Estonia for the national Song Festival and traveled around there for about a week, and now we are in Helsinki for a few days before we go back to Chicago. Today we went to Suomelinna and then wandered around the Design District for a bit. Before we leave, we're planning to go to a couple of museums and maybe a sauna. What are you up to? Wanna hang out? We're staying in Kallio.
