she has no redeeming qualities

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 00:49 (ten years ago) link

you don't find perfect teeth redeeming?

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 00:55 (ten years ago) link

The cool trick that the writers played was that the presence of Caroline made Adam feel like the sane, rational, sympathetic character

, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 00:56 (ten years ago) link

Am I the only one who thought her hairy privates were a bit of comic relief?

― c21m50nh3x460n, Wednesday, January 22, 2014 10:41 AM (59 minutes ago)

lol she's post-pubescent!

giant faps are what you take, wanking on the moon (sic), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 01:03 (ten years ago) link

the problem is there really was nothing even sorta redeeming about the sis. like the crazy was at 11 and that's it. no real indication of how anyone could get sucked in by her. just sorta grotesque.

note i didn't think the portrayal of people in group was like that at all

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 01:47 (ten years ago) link

it wasn't as extreme but it was still a thing where these people were presented as both clearly suffering and pathetic, to the extent where you could sort of get why jessa was repelled by them, and the idea that she was supposed to identify with them and their issues.

Actress was on louie some time back, killed it.

she's not that bad as far as characters in this show go. her reaction to the charlie breakup is overblown and she seems incredibly self-centered much of the time but then again, i can relate.

― tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 00:48 (1 hour ago) Permalink

I think she's kind of a sad character actually. I guess she's supposed to be narcissistic? She doesn't actually ever seem to care for Charlie at all, she only cares whether she can win/retain his love. I think that fits nicely with her interest in Booth Jonathan, which, as the show pretty much spells out, is more about the "idea" of being with him than about him. Of course, the fact that she says that so brazenly and openly, to his face, only emphasizes how narcissistic she is, that it doesn't even seem to occur to her that there's anything wrong with that. In that way, she's very well written and believable.

Whereas Shoshana I just kind of find flat and not very interesting - maybe that's more the acting, idk.

Adam feel like the sane, rational, sympathetic character

Feel like Adam is the sanest, most sympathetic character on this show

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 15:18 (ten years ago) link

That's bananas. I was totally on the side of Natalia and Amy Schumer in that coffee shop scene. The guy is a total asshole *at best*

Walter Galt, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link

They were awful in that scene, there's no reason to publicly trash someone like that

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 15:41 (ten years ago) link

Uh, yeah. That was seriously ott.

just wanna say I love Bob Balaban as the therapist

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:18 (ten years ago) link

It wasnt the way to deal with that situation but shes justified in hating adam. She was needlessly cruel to hannah though.

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:18 (ten years ago) link

yeah Balaban's great. lol @ his book

xp

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:20 (ten years ago) link

This show is great again

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:20 (ten years ago) link

Adam basically sexually assaulted Natalia (and he didn't seem to treat Hannah too great in the sack either), made him way less sympathetic to me

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:22 (ten years ago) link

yeah he's a pig for doing that but she seemed to be yelling at him b/c he dumped her and never called

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:25 (ten years ago) link

i think this is the worst season by far

max, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:13 (ten years ago) link

well this ep was the worst since s1 imo

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:14 (ten years ago) link

hope it turns around but agree with max. everything so far has been redundant at best.

ryan, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:16 (ten years ago) link

i watched up through the sixth episode on a screener and found it just got worse. though other people think the 4th, 5th, 6th episodes redeemed the first three so maybe im just wrong

max, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:21 (ten years ago) link

there's no reason to publicly trash someone like that

Not to like hyperlink a thinkpiece or whatever, but Adam kind of assaulted her. I laughed at "Did you leave in a hurry?" and then laughed harder at Ray laughing at the zing, anyway.

Also kind of grossed out by Adam's grunting "I can't sleep if I don't come" with Shoshanna in the room.

Walter Galt, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:33 (ten years ago) link

She seemed way more pissed about him not calling, she obviously cares about him still

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:59 (ten years ago) link

watched up through the sixth episode on a screener

Woah didn't know Scrooge McDuck posted here, congrats.

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:59 (ten years ago) link

"Worst since s1" doesnot scan to me, nearly half of s2 was a waste of time

Simon H., Wednesday, 22 January 2014 18:07 (ten years ago) link

yeah Season 2 was pretty bad

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 18:14 (ten years ago) link

I've rarely completely loved or completely hate an episode of the show. There's usually some good dialogue, and there's usually at least the enjoyment of recognition (the locations, the character types, the reasonably-well-done "nowness" of it). So it's always a show that entertains me enough to keep watching and rarely blows me away.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 19:16 (ten years ago) link

agreed

Evan, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 21:50 (ten years ago) link

It's ever so shallow...

Le passé, non seulement n'est pas fugace, il reste sur place (Michael White), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 23:01 (ten years ago) link

(But I think that's rather apposite)

Le passé, non seulement n'est pas fugace, il reste sur place (Michael White), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 23:06 (ten years ago) link

the reasonably-well-done "nowness" of it

So well put and so key. Unlike every other movie or TV show where a young person's bedroom has been production-designed with completely incongruous band posters, everything seems totally real on GIRLS

Walter Galt, Thursday, 23 January 2014 08:56 (ten years ago) link

@Walter Galt, which is funny because I recommended it to my 42-year old workmate. He watched 5 minutes of it and said all of it felt too contrived/forced.

c21m50nh3x460n, Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:32 (ten years ago) link

shoshanna feels like one of those occasional tertiary side characters who is funny precisely because they are a (one-note) "type" who has been inflated into one of the main characters. it's like if the soup nazi moved in with jerry or something and just kept on doing the same schtick. not that it really bothers me though.

i think this is a pretty good show, probably in the top 25% of recentish TV dramas. it's not one of the best things on TV, it's not one of the worst, it's not revolutionary, it's just... pretty good. like all shows it has subplots and whole episodes that fall flat, and others that are very good. which i'm fine with.

kramer was sort of one-note

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Friday, 24 January 2014 04:08 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, some of Shoshana's lines this season have felt more like, "Wouldn't it be funny for Shoshana to say this?" than genuine-sounding dialogue. But I guess she's always kind of flirted with caricature.

jaymc, Friday, 24 January 2014 04:09 (ten years ago) link

i laughed when the guy at the bar described shoshanna yelling "hey hottie you know where to find some dank weed"

I think this season is a lot less organic so far... like, Caroline is Poochie

Just throw a grenade into the foxhole and see what happens

I'm not gonna stress though, still gonna watch

Like these tricks feel like what people do in creative writing classes do when they're on deadline at the end of the semester and are at a loss

I don't think the pressure of meeting the deadlines of a season has been conducive to the writers

They should take a year off like Louie

, Friday, 24 January 2014 05:20 (ten years ago) link

kramer was sort of one-note

you know, I thought of that. i'm actually not a seinfeld fan, but I didn't want to anger those who are/were.

"Did Marnie finally throw in the towel?"

great episode imo

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Monday, 27 January 2014 04:22 (ten years ago) link

When you watch these on-demand, there are these little after-interviews with Dunham and they're awful. It's just like Dunham explaining what happened in the show and why in the most captain-obviousy way whatsoever.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 January 2014 04:26 (ten years ago) link

Yeah those are the worst.

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Monday, 27 January 2014 04:27 (ten years ago) link

As for ep 3 -- the introduction of Adam's sister was sort of oddly handled I thought, like she was actually a seriously disturbed and disturbing character being handled in what seemed like a comic and lighthearted way and I wasn't sure what to make of it.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 January 2014 04:32 (ten years ago) link

ok dying at the gawker bit.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Monday, 27 January 2014 05:32 (ten years ago) link

just finished seasons 1 and 2 on dvd. had to watch season 1 twice because i really didn't know what to think about it. specifically whether we were meant to like these people.

and according to the commentaries, the special effect in 2.09 is glycerin and conditioner. lena's dad complained about the amount, saying it was too much. odd conversation to have with your dad...
