The guitar player from TSOL, Ron Emory, has a signature Fender acoustic for some reason

three months pass...

And in worse news, Fender closed the USA ovation plant in Connecticut, which is a shame, and means 45 people just got the punk slip dropped on them without warning. Before you go "eh ovation who gives a shit" what no one is talking about is that this is the same and only factory used to make us production guilds. So it appears that Guild USA is also a thing of the past.

Roback will have a wide scope of responsibility including overseeing the development of Fender’s emerging digital strategy aimed at deeply engaging musicians and music fans more broadly. Roback will also establish a new Los Angeles office in order to expand the company’s consumer marketing and digital capabilities.

Yeah, the number one qualification in that article seems to be that he used to be a securities lawyer, so I'm guessing they are going to try to go public. Again.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 02:42 (ten years ago) link

Well that and further implementation of their direct to consumer sales thing. Basically every store owner I know that still deals fender is going through waves of furious exploding head disease.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 02:44 (ten years ago) link

lol I've never heard of any of this stuff.

Roback was most recently the CEO of Dashbox, a cloud-based workflow management system for music licensing, and Managing Director of The Media Farm, a media company focused on owning and managing an IP portfolio for multi-platform exploitation. Prior to Dashbox and The Media Farm, he founded LAUNCH Media, Inc. and served as its president.

LAUNCH transformed the consumer music discovery experience online, and Roback led the company through its initial public offering in 1999 and then its acquisition by Yahoo! in 2001. Following the sale, he served as vice president and general manager of Yahoo! Music, where he led the company's global music operations and built it into the Internet's most popular music destination.

how's life, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 10:03 (ten years ago) link

I interviewed at Launch (can't bear to type its silly capitals) in 1998. They had a big, empty office in Santa Monica and were in need of code monkeys to maintain their cumbersome content system - only they expected said monkeys to, ahem, *intern* for no pay, long hours, the usual.

Didn't take it. My dorky little sysadmin job was just fine and near a record store. Also, standard "fuck you pay me" rules are always in effect.

Never got a chance to ask Bob Roback if he was related to the Rain Parade/Mazzy Star Robacks.

Genuinely upset at loss of Guild plant.

The fender lols
And the lightnin' strikes
Another love grows cold
On a sleepless night
As the storm blows on
Out of control
Deep in her heart
The fender lols

three weeks pass...

Bono doesn't play guitar, and Edge mostly plays Les Pauls, Explorers, and Rickenbackers. Good move.

a vintage telecaster is my dream guitar (super boring I know), but will probably go G&L at this point

Have to pay for a wedding first but will be looking in 2015. So I'll be sure to message for a quote then.

TBF, I always liked the Stratocaster/AC30 sound Edge used on War/Under A Blood Red Sky

Wait, my bad, a white P Bass with '1 2 3 4' engraved on the neck plate. I wonder what mark-up they're going to put on it?

just like Nietzsche but with jokes (snoball), Sunday, 14 December 2014 12:00 (nine years ago) link

1 - take a regular white P Bass
2 - pay $10 to get neck plate engraved at local strip mall engravers
3 - ???
4 - profit!

I never see it brought up much but I think Fender and Gibson's biggest rival is used guitars. There has been just so freaking many guitars made in the last 25 years, I don't see why anyone really needs to buy a new one unless it is something kinda unique.

earlnash, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 02:03 (nine years ago) link

Eh fender and gibsons biggest rival is all the other smaller companies beating them at their game imo.

^^^^^ THIS

Pretty sure Fender Japan >> Fender everywhere else right now.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 18:47 (nine years ago) link

i just bought a 50th anniversary squier strat off of craigslist....pretty damn good little guitar from the mid 90s (apparently this particular squier is popular among modders because it used the full sized, dimensions standard strat body not the slightly slimmed down/lighter squier body type and is all alder)

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 15:09 (nine years ago) link

The first and to date only vintage Fender I've played that has ever really filled me with desire was an early 80s Japanese Squire Jazz Bass. What a fantastic instrument. They're still cheaper than a new Custom Shop Jazz.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 17:49 (nine years ago) link

i've had a mexican mid-90s jazz bass for years and it's great....esp good because i did a affordable swap-out from the cheaper stock bridge to a leo quan badass bridge, which helps a lot and is super easy to do

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 18:32 (nine years ago) link

Fender Japan is no more, apparently

I dunno, without a built-in USB port, or NFL branding, it just doesn't seem true to the Fender aesthetic.

three weeks pass...

So I recently sold some gear, including 1 gently used Mexican Telecaster and an Epiphone 339 (I still like them fine, but I have many more guitars than I need).

It would seem that Fenders in general hold value remarkably well - paid three hundred something for it, and got two hundred something for it. The Epiphone, not so much.
