it has a number of trip-hoppy moments, i find.

there are some things i actually think BOC have gotten better at with this album (does 'dynamics' made any sense here? a more controlled and carefully deployed use of filigree 'fx', at any rate), which makes its failings all the more frustrating (more than any backwards-run creepiness, i still feel it's just missing CHUNK)

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 12 September 2005 18:39 (eighteen years ago) link

(btw referring to any part of any music as either filigree or fx offends me as much as its likely to anyone else)

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 12 September 2005 18:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Don't go hatin' on This Mortal Coil! (perhaps an interesting compare and contrast actually with BoC)

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I've been listening to this album for the last week. For me it falls between MHTRTC and Geogaddi. I like it 100 times more than 'Geo', but it does't touch 'Music', mostly due to the lack of that eerie mysteriousness that hit the right spot on MHTRTC and Hi Scores EP (but was overdone to the point of self-parody on Geogaddi aka "the Leslie Neilson album" imo).

This quote hits the nail on the head:

So, as everyone should do, I got very stoned and listened to this album with friends.

It's called "1.mp3", has no tags, runs 4:58 -- and I like it! So what's the ID?

christmas lights (christmaslights), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 03:25 (eighteen years ago) link

i think this one, besides a few tracks here and there, is godawful boring and made me go back and appreciate geogaddi even more. i never really found any of their stuff that eerie or mysterious to begin with, but i thought music has the right.. was cheeseball esp. considering all the lame hype surrounding it, and all the idmers waxing poetic, etc..

amon (eman), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 03:40 (eighteen years ago) link

i love the leslie nielsen sample.

otm

amon (eman), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 03:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Cd sounds nice on one listen, though it does sound like boards have made their "moon safari".
You won't escape this album over the next 2 years.....it'll be piped everywhere.....

roy, Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:42 (eighteen years ago) link

whatever, if i was stoned and walked into a coffee shop and heard this music playing, i would ask what it was.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:49 (eighteen years ago) link

especially DAYVAN COWBOY!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:51 (eighteen years ago) link

how are we 100 percent sure that this is all actually boards of canada?

ben, Friday, 16 September 2005 03:43 (eighteen years ago) link

because some of us have ACTUAL REAL PROMOS

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 September 2005 04:00 (eighteen years ago) link

i like Chromakey Dreamcoat a lot, the rest of the album seems like a grower maybe, haven't heard enough yet. i think each record they do, the drums get less intrusive (the one thing i always liked least about boc were the clumpy and too foregrounded drums).

it is funny, how a new album by a band, can make a previously "mixed response" type album seem better than it did before, with so many (self included) picking out the many good parts of geogaddi (agreed, particularly, about the leslie nielsen sample)

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:54 (eighteen years ago) link

has anyone trie playing these songs backward or anything like that?
or have you listened closely to what the voices on the album are saying
i believe that they are a bit harder to decipher on this one

ben, Saturday, 17 September 2005 03:20 (eighteen years ago) link

heh, "splashing pools of mercury" must be one of the most commonly recurrning reynolds (and reynolds copyists?) evocative sound desciption phrases.

and, uh, oops: why are all the 'burn it' recommendations actually tracks from the new animal collective record?

jermaine (jnoble), Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:37 (eighteen years ago) link

This is a quality album. They have really pulled a blinder with this one. Way to go Boards!

Anybody ever figure out what that track was that had the sample "I was kind of on my own" in one of the fake sets with all the Freescha tunes?

Rakel, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 15:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Which Freescha track was that because that was the one I really liked.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 15:46 (eighteen years ago) link

It's not Freescha, somebody else.

the ultimate indicator of pre-release hype:

...um, it's a kaleidoscope (considering the highest bid so far, it must be a magic one.)

venimdenim, Sunday, 2 October 2005 11:51 (eighteen years ago) link

speaking of pre-release hype...does anyone know if there is going to be limited-edition released? (you know, kinda like the "limited" edition release of geogaddi that can still be found on warpmart like four years later!)

venimdenim, Sunday, 2 October 2005 11:58 (eighteen years ago) link

phamphire pheadphase

After reading this here, http://boardsofcanada.watmm.com/, I was wondering if Macquarie Ridge has leaked anywhere. I haven't been able to find it on soulseek...

"The Japanese version of The Campfire Headphase, BoC's 3rd album due out October 17th in the US and UK, features a bonus track called Macquarie Ridge, made especially for this release. The Japanese version of TCH is due out October 12th, a full five days before the UK and US versions. However, be warned - it currently retails for 2500 Yen, which is about 22USD and about 12 and a half British pounds."
