So far, so awesome. Lots of musicians in the audience so kind of doubting I will get to meet the man on the break.

three weeks pass...

Tried Zenon for greek/cypriot food last night, 31st Ave in Astoria. Very good place, pleasant neighborhoody/family-run kind of vibe, and for $20-25 per person you can get a ridiculous mezze with like 10 salads and 8 kinds of meat (or seafood or whatever). We got the "Cypriot" mezze, and it had pork loin, fried calamari, pork meatball, pork kebab, lamb meatball, sausage, quail, and a bunch of standard cold appetizers like tsatziki, beets, etc. Not quite as good as Kyclades in quality but very good for the money and it was an easy place to be with a toddler.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 10 February 2014 15:54 (ten years ago) link

Had a similar Cypriot mezze feast at Kopiaste Taverna. Very pork heavy, with some sausages the are amongst the best things is ever eaten.

dan selzer, Monday, 10 February 2014 19:32 (ten years ago) link

The pork kebab and pork meatballs were the highlights actually, and everything else was very solid.

IMPORTANT QUEENS FOOD UPDATE

We've been going to Arepas Grill instead of Arepas Cafe because there's a parking lot and it's less crowded than the original location. Initially the food was basically the same, with some more plates, but on my last visit I noticed they're serving cachapas and patacones. The latter is basically the best thing ever. I've had them at a place in Elmhurst and a place in Inwood and this was as good as anywhere. Pork, beef and chicken (or shrimp) and lettuce and tomatoes and ketchup and mayonnaise sandwich with two giant monster tostones instead of bread. A serious gut-buster of the first degree. Add some of their usual hot and green sauce and forget about it (as they say in Brooklyn).

Greg Stone, 57, was also drawn to the youthful vibe of Long Island City. Mr. Stone lived in the New York area until 2007, relocated to Florida, and returned to the city last summer. In early March he moved to a one-bedroom rental in the Maximilian, whose amenities include a gym, a landscaped roof deck and bike storage. He pays about $2,700 a month for his apartment, and was attracted in part by the easy commute to his office in Midtown, where he works as a financial analyst. But as a single man, a powerful lure was the vibrancy of the street life.

In searching for a home, he had ruled out neighborhoods like Forest Hills, Queens — “a grandma place,” as he described it. “I wanted to live someplace younger,” Mr. Stone said. “I liked that the restaurants on Vernon Boulevard aren’t too stuffy, that they’re more casual than the ones you find in older neighborhoods. I like that you see people walking the streets late at night.”

btw I havent ruled out Queens for a July 1 move, if anyone has leads

Forest Hills may not be all that hip, but there are definitely a lot of young people there, especially new parents. Even since I've been there it's gotten a little more Park Slope-like, especially the area just north of the Gardens and east of where Nick's Pizza is. My area has a lot of young parents too but it skews a little more russian/chinese/israeli.

Watching good band at Terraza. Piano player made his first record at age 11, so there is hope for K, Hurting.

Not a lot of people here. Thing I kind of don't like about Queens, truth be told- if you had this kind of thing at BAM, I believe there would be much more of a turnout. The much-feared horde of Brooklyn hipsters on the horizon, like Dino Buzzati's Tartars, ain't coming any time soon.

Choogle Plus (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 26 April 2014 22:28 (ten years ago) link

Don't you have some connection with guitar player in that band as well, Hurting?

Choogle Plus (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 27 April 2014 00:21 (ten years ago) link

Just got back to my own neighborhood and stopped off to see some Latin Jazz but first had to hear Indian guitar master and composer Prasanna playing behind singer doing "My Favorite Things."

Choogle Plus (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 27 April 2014 03:06 (ten years ago) link

Sorry not Latin Jazz tonight, more like Funky Jazz Fusion led by a Cuban keyboardist with another Cuban-American on drums.

Choogle Plus (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 27 April 2014 03:40 (ten years ago) link

sry, just saw this. Did you introduce yourself? It probably wouldn't have been all that interesting to him since we haven't seen each other in like 13 years, but he is a really nice guy. Who's the guitar player you're referring to?

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Sunday, 27 April 2014 04:06 (ten years ago) link

in re queens vs. brooklyn turnouts, I remember I was really shocked that mary halvorson was standing room only at BAM Cafe, which is silly in retrospect, but that's what queens has done to me.

4m4nd4 M0n4c0. Did not introduce self, no, too busy reintroducing myself to people I sort of knew already but had half-forgotten me.

Interesting to compare seeing music at Flushing Town Hall and then at Terraza. More later.

At some point will follow up on that. Meanwhile great band at Terraza tonight with awesome drummer.

There is irritating mistake in their Film Composer exhibit. Example given for Antonio Carlos Jobim is "Manhã de Carnaval," which he had nothing to do with.

You many notice future uptick in my use of reaction GIFs.

See if you can spot photo of Paul Robeson amongst The Actors.

a one-bedroom rental in the Maximilian, whose amenities include a gym, a landscaped roof deck and bike storage. He pays about $2,700 a month for his apartment

I know this post was from a month ago but ...... 2700 for one bedroom in LIC! that is nuts.

dmr, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:02 (nine years ago) link

like someone recently wrote, ppl in these towers live above LIC.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:05 (nine years ago) link

a skyline view and a roof deck is nothing to sneeze at but damn, you can get 2 bedrooms in Park Slope for that much.

dmr, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

Can you really?

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:21 (nine years ago) link

This puts the median Park Slope 2Br at $3,100, so I guess in theory there must be 2Brs out there for 2700, although I'm guessing they're those 700 sf carved up dealies.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:25 (nine years ago) link

I didn't really want to be like "here's what I pay in rent" but my rent is only slightly higher than that for a 2 bedroom off 7th Ave.

I mean it's probably not the norm (I think we got a little lucky) but it exists. (xpost)

dmr, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:30 (nine years ago) link

Yeah cause if that was easy to find in Park Slope I would be kicking myself a little for not looking in Park Slope.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:31 (nine years ago) link

Although it's still more than our all-in cost of owning in a co-op where we are, with probably much more square footage for the price.
