What if you get one close to the 7

You're just one stop away from Grand Central then

Bet they're expensive though

yeah that Wyndham one is actually not too far from Court Square. Don't know about immediate vicinity, but it's close to the water so it can't be that bad.

GAA Humour‎ > ‎
Micheal O' Muircheartaigh Quotes
"... and Brian Dooher is down injured. And while he is, i'll tell ye a little story. I was in Times' Square in New York last week, and I was missing the Championship back home. So I approached a news stand and I said 'I suppose ye wouldn't have the Kerryman would ye?' To which, the Egyptian behind the counter turned to me and he said 'do you want the
North Kerry edition or the South Kerry edition?'... he had both...so I bought both. And Dooher is back on his feet..."

the only time i've been to queens was to visit irish people

caek, Monday, 13 January 2014 10:23 (ten years ago) link

We have an "irish gastropub" seemingly run by actual irish people in our neighborhood now.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Monday, 13 January 2014 15:57 (ten years ago) link

I live in the irish neighborhood, and it's gotten slightly less Irish in the 7 years I've been here, but there's still plenty of presence and visitors from the old country.

dan selzer, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:05 (ten years ago) link

you can even buy irish newspapers at a bunch of places here

iatee, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:07 (ten years ago) link

if only new york had some irish bars

There is cool stuff in Queens though! As an archi-tourist I maybe favor weird buildings and things that nobody else would care about. But for example I had a great afternoon a couple months ago, traipsing around Forest Hills Gardens (early 20th century garden suburb, nice planning, lovely "town square" moment, and just one super-cute super-expensive house after another - improbably not gated), and then on to Forest Park, which is exactly what it says in the name: trees, lots of 'em. Plus hills. One of the more "out of the city" moments I've had here. With the autumn colors going, it really felt like growing up in Georgia and going on a nature hike at the state park or something. I still need to hit up Flushing Meadows.

And of course LIC has PS1, Museum of the Moving Image, Socrates Sculpture Park, the Noguchi Museum... and on the way, check out Roosevelt Island, both for the aerial tram ride over the river, and for the (sadly incomplete) late 1960s idea of a new Brutalist "main street." Love that place. Here's to Queens!

Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:14 (ten years ago) link

how come ny irish bars are fratboy hellholes and boston irish bars are just ordinary neighborhood places, its counterintuitive

lag∞n, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:15 (ten years ago) link

the ny irish bars in queens don't have any fratboys they just have scary 60 y/o irish dudes

iatee, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:16 (ten years ago) link

yeah was thinking maybe its cause of the presence of irish people in boston that does it

lag∞n, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:17 (ten years ago) link

FoHi Gardens really is worth seeing if you're already in the area. I don't know if I'd make a trip to Queens just for that on a trans-atlantic visit to NYC, but if you're looking for interesting out-of-the way stuff you could always do that and combine it with a meal at the Michelin-rated Danny Brown, or the more casual but very good Nick's Pizza.

Forest Park is also neat because at first it seems like a more badly maintained Prospect Park, but then it has actual nature/light hiking trails that really make you feel outside the city.

And I do think a trip to Flushing is worthwhile for the food and atmosphere.

I usually take tourists to jackson heights for indian food

iatee, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:23 (ten years ago) link

iatee, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:25 (ten years ago) link
