i need to check this out

It's only available on vinyl, right? I love all the IDIB stuff (a lot) but this one hasn't appeared for sale on iTunes or eMusic or anything. I have heard one song on a sampler and it was really, really great. Can't get enough haunting icy horror movie soundtrack-y stuff.

Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Thursday, 16 April 2009 09:41 (eight years ago) Permalink

i think i like "universal mind" much better than everything else on here, and sonically it's quite an outlier. the rest is there but doesnt do much for me

europeen handball (k3vin k.), Thursday, 16 April 2009 15:18 (eight years ago) Permalink

its available on CD too! or it was--may be sold out. mike had it at the italians store for a while. the album is actually out on human ear (vinyl) and gloriette (cd), not italians... she just has done a couple 12" w/ them, plus opened for glass candy a couple times.

A+ album

still waiting on "want you back" 12" on idib. i will flatly not hear most of this summer's best songs but it is the kind of thing i want to christen THIS SUMMER'S SUMMEREST JAM.

lp is a real grower. the lover cover used to fade by but its slink has swayed me.

corps of discovery (schlump), Thursday, 16 April 2009 15:34 (eight years ago) Permalink

the album is actually out on human ear (vinyl) and gloriette (cd), not italians...

aha... looks like it's the reverse: Human Ear has the CD, but it's still listed as a "pre-order" (even though the release date is listed as December 25th, 2008). It's $12. The vinyl on Gloriette is sold out. Another Google link showed there was some other CD-R thing (different from the album) sold exclusively through the Other Music site last year, but that's all gone.

Is it not really worth it, money-wise, for small labels like IDIB/Gloriette/Human Ear to sell stuff digitally? Or why else wouldn't they?

Mike was putting the IDIB stuff on iTunes for a while, but the newest ones (Bottin, Nite Jewel, Twisted Wires) haven't shown up on there.

still haven't heard the album but the first 12" has been played all year since i got in like november i think. really good. i see it as a dark and moody take on all those great sassy female vocalled west end tracks like "another man"

is she good live? playing over here in august

her weakest track...the ONLY weak track.

Spinspin Sugah, Sunday, 16 August 2009 05:18 (eight years ago) Permalink

ha, no. the album does have some weakish tracks, but they don't bother me in the context of the album. but "want you back" is peak material. it's not afraid of itself.

Can't stop listening to Want You Back

Trip Maker, Thursday, 27 August 2009 22:27 (eight years ago) Permalink

that "artificial intelligence" song upthread is really nice. the synths are very nostalgic to me. they remind me of joe jackson or something. or like 80s yes.

I had high hopes for this but my goodness, is this ever the wrong end of the 80s for me

I do like the hook on the chorus, though, when her voice comes in and it's all pretty

it just reminds me of the "nightclub" scene in so many cop operas on telly in the late 80s

There is going to be a Nite Jewel thread on the roof of a building in my town in a couple of weeks and I'm pretty stoked.
I just hope it gets some promotional help, or that the right few people tell their friends about it. It's the kind of event that could easily fly under the radar.

Tell us more Ned...does it sound like the last one or is it brighter? Like the hypnagogic pop of her first one or less slanted?

New one not as upbeat as the other but still very welcome
Kind of wish I could make out the words though?

calstars, Wednesday, 5 April 2017 01:16 (seven months ago) Permalink

Here's my attempt at most of it:

I saw you out
it was in a dream
you talked to me
but what did it mean?

took me home
sitting on the couch
it was dark
I was out

please don't let the light in
cuz we're trying
to find you in the space that's in between us

i still believe in space
cover up my eyes again
seem like you're away (?)

is it you (??)

the answer is love
the answer is love

calstars, Wednesday, 5 April 2017 01:58 (seven months ago) Permalink

Looks like Nite Jewel also just put out an EP called "Obsession", all tracks below

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Friday, 21 April 2017 01:58 (six months ago) Permalink

Newest one "had to let me go" is the most funky of the singles so far:

calstars, Sunday, 30 April 2017 16:52 (six months ago) Permalink

Wish the Meters could play rhythm on it.

calstars, Sunday, 30 April 2017 16:55 (six months ago) Permalink

^ Nice track. "Obsession" EP has grown on me; it's uniformly chill which initially turned me off, but I found it compelling in the rain today. Sublime and insular, with the highlights "Real High" and "Real Low", gorgeous tracks with alien, aquatic synth bursts.

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 23:55 (six months ago) Permalink

Haven't heard the EP but will ASAP

I also think this latest one is the one she's most invested and engaged in

calstars, Thursday, 4 May 2017 00:49 (six months ago) Permalink

This album is so good. I really wasn't that excited when I put it on as Liquid Cool didn't do a lot for me. I think this could be her best album.

Moodles, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 01:58 (four months ago) Permalink

Moodles, you mean Nite-Funk? Yeah that's a good one and indicative of where she ended up on this new one. Turns out I'm seeing her tonight after all, so stoked - one of my favourite artists

Unchanging Window (Ross), Tuesday, 11 July 2017 18:03 (four months ago) Permalink

I should give that one another shot too, but I was thinking of Liquid Cool, which I forgot was a full album.

Moodles, Tuesday, 11 July 2017 18:18 (four months ago) Permalink

Saw her last night and she was great. Duo with a keyboardist which allows Ramona more of an open air to sing and not play keys primarily. She's a wicked musician and a great singer, particular highlights were a blistering version of "Running Out of Time" and "What Did He Say?"

Also "Obsession" EP has become the dark counterpoint to "Real High". It contains many of the same tracks but is much more sullen and comedown than the LP. "Real Low" revisits the title track from her last LP in instrumental form and is lovely.

this album is definitely not front-loaded. it seems to peak in tempo in the middle and carry that for 3 tracks, culminating in a suite of some of her finest chill songs to date. The only weak spot is "I Don't Know"

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 11 September 2017 03:35 (two months ago) Permalink

I like that song. Pretty much like the whole album, in fact.

Moodles, Monday, 11 September 2017 06:22 (two months ago) Permalink

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 11 September 2017 06:46 (two months ago) Permalink

I went to see her last week because it was only £7 and I thought that seemed like a decent deal. I had forgotten just how many truly great songs she's made over the years and it was brilliant, her live voice was flawless.
