last December I first heard "Merry Go Round" in the radio while driving through Nashville. today I heard on the same station again driving through, but this year the dj was effusive about her accomplishments this year. very cool year!

arrow was around longer and made the rounds on the awards show, so i'd guess that.

no, i think 'merry go round' was around longer - technically a 2012 single - and was nommed for awards etc., but 'arrow' is fresher, maybe more prone to attract votes?

j., Saturday, 21 December 2013 23:14 (ten years ago) link

my guess is that "blowin' smoke" will be mostly neglected, with "merry go 'round" and "follow your arrow" sharing the attention.

if we're talking pazz & jop, it's worth noting that "merry go 'round" already placed there last year (25th). i am guessing, since many didn't hear the song until she started getting lots of press in 2013 (i myself didn't hear the song until it was peaking at radio -- maybe january?), that it'll get votes this year as well. p&j does that thing where it includes a song's votes from the previous year if the number of new votes is great enough (i think at least ~half the previous total), so if that happens it could place again, presumably higher.

yes, that was my reason for wondering about the probable numbers

if only 'stupid' was a single, then i could vote my heart :/

Which Carole King song did they do (assuming they did one)?

Also Bob Harris (Time Out founder/Old Grey Whistle Test Presenter) put 'Merry Go Round' on his Desert Island Discs this week, which was pretty cool.

The wife and I happened upon the Grammy performance of "Follow Your Arrow," and I just saw the CD on sale at Target for only $7.50 so we picked it up. I am one of those people who say "I hate country music but I love Johnny Cash" to the annoyance of many bu it's kind of true.

apparently at a recent show w/ lady antebellum she said "keep it to yourself" is being released as a new radio single: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/music-review-lady-antebellum-and-kacey-musgraves-at-the-patriot-center/2014/02/23/90734364-9ca5-11e3-8112-52fdf646027b_story.html

happy about that bc it is my favorite on the album but also bc it probably means she is not being rushed to crank out a second album too soon

dyl, Monday, 24 February 2014 18:45 (ten years ago) link

i think it's just a great indication that the label is being supportive of an album that has not really been a blockbuster. probably all that airtime on The Grammys helped them decide to release a 4th single.

Some Lady A fans may be getting to the gigs early and discovering her via the live show too

yeah, a couple of new ones, one was a charming song about weed and another was a charming kinda-rewrite of "follow your arrow"

lex pretend, Sunday, 6 July 2014 22:33 (nine years ago) link

she said she hasn't had time to write much and apologised for playing same trailer songs but she's going back in the studio in the autumn

lex pretend, Sunday, 6 July 2014 22:33 (nine years ago) link

sounds like a familiar story: second album harder to write b/c artist on the road.

Charming as ever last night. Three new-ish songs - "Biscuits," "High Time" and "Cup of Tea," each very much in the vein of her other stuff. Bunch of great covers, including Dolly's "Here You Come Again" and TLC's "No Scrubs." Cool light up suits and boots. And cacti.

I think she's on the new Brian Wilson, for some reason?

three weeks pass...

her second album is apparently finished and the single will be out in a few weeks: http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/the-615/6487352/kacey-musgraves-keith-urban-eric-church-umg-crs-showcase-nashville

it's the song "gravy" that she has performed live over the past while. unless she has rewritten the song to be different from how it sounded in live performance i honestly don't really like it, it's clearly meant to be a less lyrically 'controversial' "follow your arrow" and some of the similarities in melody and progression are so blatant as to be distracting

dyl, Friday, 27 February 2015 06:55 (nine years ago) link

er sorry the song is called "biscuits" as if that makes much difference lol

dyl, Friday, 27 February 2015 06:57 (nine years ago) link

two weeks pass...

"Biscuits" is on the radio and stuff enough to chart on the Hot 100 this week but the studio version is impossible to find online because the label keeps pulling it anywhere it's posted until the iTunes release on the 17th. kind of aggravating, i really wanna hear it.

some dude, Friday, 13 March 2015 16:52 (nine years ago) link

hot take here on listen one but this sound like a more crossover friendly version of Follow Your Arrow with a lotta Miranda thrown in and wonkiness and banjo solos
i think this could blow up bigger than anything she's done prior and hopefully the album will have some new wrinkles to enjoy.

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Friday, 13 March 2015 17:42 (nine years ago) link
