ban same-sex marriage *losing* in AZ. not that it makes a practical difference: already statutorily illegal. but how many times has a ban lost?

Here we go with the mandatory "victory for the American people" speeches

I realize NC-08 isn't nearly as exciting as VA-Sen, but damn, talk about a photo finish! you should be close enough to care, Tallis.

WA-8

D-Burner: 50.2312%
R-Reichert (i): 49.7688%

That's just 200 votes. There are more people on my floor of the building I work at in Redmond than that.

I have no clue which part of the eastside has reported yet. Very interesting. A Burner win would be yet another cherry on top, etc.

Fox is giving Webb the edge in VA. Also Kristol is saying that the Republicans are fearing that the city vote in Missouri will turn that vote to McCaskell.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman (news, bio, voting record), the Democrats' vice presidential candidate in 2000 but running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, kept his seat from Connecticut.

heh, kind of had to read that last part a couple of times to make sure I got it right.

Anyway -- first female Speaker of the House ever! Cool!

Jim Ryun going down makes me happy because of that hilarious story about Cheney's little pageant with him in front of true believers a few weeks ago. I hope everyone there is crying pukingly right now.

anyway, while (a) i woulda liked to have seen stender beat ferguson in NJ-07 (my parents' district, and the current district of my old hometown); (b) i woulda LOVED to have seen lieberman eat shit and lose (and thereby spare everyone the grief that i believe from the bottom of my heart that he is going to unleash [though i would love to be proven wrong on this account]); and (c) i woulda LOVED to have had VA and MO definitely settled before i go to bed (as in like right now); on the whole i am rather pleased with tonight's results.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 05:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Ned, let's get to the amusing quotes now. here's little green footballs celebrating:

The first paragraph of Reuters’ report on the win of former Nation of Islam spokesman Keith Ellison in Minnesota says it all: Minnesota sends first Muslim to Congress.

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Voters elected a black Democrat as the first Muslim in Congress on Tuesday after a race in which he advocated quick U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and made little mention of his faith.

They’ll be celebrating in Gaza tomorrow.

If Burns wins, and he gets indicted via the whole Abramoff thing, does Burns reappoint someone, or is there a special election?

I feel bad for Chafee tonight. Mostly for losing, because he's a real decent guy. But also because Wolf Blitzer called him 'Lincoln Cheney' on two separate occasions.

Anyway, hoping the returns in WA-8 are coming from east to west.. the closer they get to Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland/Juanita, the more promising for Burner.

a poll out last night showed Burner leading early voters by 8 and trailing the rest by 5, which put her in a statistical tie. i figure her voters are more motivated, and while the CW is rain favors the GOP, i think she wins in a nailbiter.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 06:14 (seventeen years ago) link

CNN say VA. votes to be canvassed til Nov.27, *then* (if winner still ahead by only 1%), then they have a recount. So right after that, they show Webb declaring VICTOREE, with still 1% of precincts (18 precincts )still to be counted the first time. But yes, McC.'s ahead by 1400 votes now, and still got most of St.Louis to report

don (dow), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 06:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Testor leading by 53% (shouldn't they be done counting by now? Only a million people in the whole state)

don (dow), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 06:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Testor's not that hot either though, libertarian at best. Huffington's complaining that Obama and others have been already cautioning voters to lower expectations (but the war's not going to be so convenient for anybody)
