Sylvester died 25 years ago this past Dec 16. So nice to see Mighty Real at number 1.

This thread was such a pleasure to read. Thank you!

so.. as a gen xy person, i really don't know .. Is "i want your love" universally regarded this highly? I mean, I love it, it was my #6 or something.

brimstead, Thursday, 19 December 2013 02:48 (ten years ago) link

"More more more" didn't make the cut on my ballot but for some reason i love that it ranked so high here.

brimstead, Thursday, 19 December 2013 02:53 (ten years ago) link

MFSB, Jackie Moore, tamiko jones, Harry Thumann, Chaka Khan FUCKING CLOUDS! Unlimited Touch, bourgie bourgie ffs, the list goes on. And on and on.

That Machine thing at #6 sounds like Muppets do disco. No way is it better than "Keep It Comin' Love" or a lot of stuff that didn't place in the top 100. Seriously, "The Hustle" and "You Sexy Thing" didn't make the poll, but this did? Oi vey. That keyboard sound is horrible.

Yep. Worst post of the entire thread.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 December 2013 06:53 (ten years ago) link

As for the full results ... a lot of good, quite a bit of bad, all in all a very accurate representation of disco. I say that as an undying fan.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 December 2013 06:53 (ten years ago) link

Tho I reiterate I have no idea where this groundswell of "I Want Your Love" support came from.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 December 2013 06:54 (ten years ago) link

Someone upthread said only on ILM would "I Feel Love" place first in a disco poll, but I think it's safe to say that only on ILM would "I Feel Love" NOT place first in a disco poll.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 December 2013 06:55 (ten years ago) link

pretty fuckin' solid 101-110 imo:

101 KC & the Sunshine Band That's the Way (I Like It)
102 Love Unlimited Orchestra Love's Theme
103 Change The Glow of Love
104 Sister Sledge Thinking of You
105 Charlie Space Woman
106 Cloud One Disco Juice
107 Hot Chocolate Every 1's a Winner
108 Passengers He's Speedy Like Gonzalez
109 Risco Connections Ain't No Stopping Us Now (Version)
110 Sylvester I Need Somebody to Love Tonight

I want your love got a boost in the late 90s when moodyman sampled it for I can't kick this feeling when it hits and then another huge boost when todd terje's edit borrowed some of moodyman's repetitions. the track has been huge since the terje edit and terje is huge on ILM ergo this placement, i think.

only on lim would two different versions of I feel love place on a disco poll separately

|$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅| (gr8080), Thursday, 19 December 2013 07:02 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I was surprised too that "I Want Your Love" was the most popular Chic tune, I would've expected that position to go to "Le Freak" or "Good Times". I've never really followed the disco edit scene, but I guess that makes sense. Seems like there were other tunes in the top 100 too that were boosted by the mid-00s disco revival (Dennis Parker's "Like an Eagle", for example). Not that this is a negative thing, though: it's great that some awesome-but-less-known disco tunes reach new listeners! But it's always interesting to ponder why some things are revived and other not... Still waiting for some taste-makers to lift Boris Midney back into the disco canon.

Tuomas, Thursday, 19 December 2013 08:02 (ten years ago) link

If I'd voted my top 5 would have probably been:

1) Dennis Parker - Like an Eagle
2) Love Unlimited Orchestra - Love's Theme
3) Donald Byrd - Love has Come Around
4) Voyage - Souvenirs
5) Sister Sledge - Thinking of You

Seems like there were other tunes in the top 100 too that were boosted by the mid-00s disco revival

I was surprised to see that "Let No Man Put Asunder" by First Choice didn't appear in this top 100. I forgot to submit a ballot but it would have been my number one. Maybe it was done to death in the late '80s to '90s and so didn't figure prominently in the recent revival (that's a guess because I have paid only limited attention to the revival)

It's funny because I started listening seriously to disco in 1978, but many earlier (even recent) records somewhat passed me by at that time, so I didn't really hear LNMPU (which was released in 1977) until the late '80s when I bought a Salsoul compilation that included it. I then became aware that it was regarded as an important record in terms of laying down the template for some house music. Even then, I was so into house music (perhaps in a rather superficial way) that it didn't really make a big impression on me. It's only really in the last ten or fifteen years that it's become a particular favourite of mine.

dubmill, Thursday, 19 December 2013 10:18 (ten years ago) link

Is there a particular reason for Supernature's high placing? aiui Love In C Minor is his most celebrated track, and Give Me Love seems to me his best, but neither of those even made the hundred.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 19 December 2013 10:24 (ten years ago) link

I think 'Supernature' might be better known in the UK? Though I'm not sure, certainly is amongst the friends of mine who dig disco. Not going to make any strong claims for the Lovich connection, tempted as I am.

emil.y, Thursday, 19 December 2013 10:37 (ten years ago) link

"Supernature" was effectively Hot Gossip's signature tune, so it enjoyed prolonged TV exposure.

emil.y, Thursday, 19 December 2013 10:47 (ten years ago) link

Supernature is more less sexy and more geeky than "Love in C Minor", plus it has that Moroder/Italo synth vibe, I think that's the reason ILM loves it more. ("Love to Love You Baby" also placed well below "I Feel Love", you could argue that these two have a similar relationship with each other as the two Cerrone tracks.) Don't get me wrong though, I think "Supernature" is a great and unique tune exactly because it is so weird and geeky. (Though I probably would've voted for "Love in C Minor" myself, if I had had any room left for Cerrone in my ballot.)

Tuomas, Thursday, 19 December 2013 10:51 (ten years ago) link

"Supernature is more less sexy"

such a great thread.
a classic.
bravo tuomas
love the fact its full of big chart hits, and more underground stuff.
i've learnt loads.
for various reasons, i did not take part.
just a shame this one did not get some love as i think its just perfect both in its original form, and tom moulton mix.

I was listening to that Tom Moulton remix box set the other day, and when The Three Degrees' "Year of Decision" played, I was like, damn! this is such a gorgeous and uplifting tune, why didn't I vote for it?! Ah well, too late now...

KCB (Kent Burt), Thursday, 19 December 2013 15:54 (ten years ago) link

I'm pleasantly surprised to see "I Want Your Love" ahead of the rest of Chic. It's my favorite, beating out, oh, maybe "Everybody Dance" by a nose probably, but I don't think it's a universal pick, and may not even score as high if this poll were done on a different day. And maybe it has gotten a boost in recent years by Moodyman and Terje, but the thing about it is it's melancholy vibe and perfect chord construction just propel it and rip your heart out. Such a killer. And I think that moody vibe may make it the most timeless of Chic tracks for me because it sits so well in with my favorite dance music in general, which tends to be run through with huge streaks of melancholy.

I didn't have time to put together a ballot for this one, unfortunately, but I like how it's turned out and look forward to looking at everyone's lists and digging for tunes I don't know.

What's happened to the spotify list? Three-quarters of it seems to have vanished.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 21 December 2013 21:16 (ten years ago) link

Yep,some bright spark has managed to delete most of the playlist.

I did a non-collaborative backup playlist here, with track selections that are only guaranteed to work for UK subscribers:

mike t-diva, Monday, 23 December 2013 12:19 (ten years ago) link

OK, I've restored from my backup playlist. US folk can add tracks that aren't showing up; a small number aren't available at all.

Thanks! That always seems to happen - I've seen other collaborative lists decimated when a poll concludes. I suspect mischief.
