Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 22:23 (ten years ago) link

Apologies for posting my list on this thread, was way to eager.

So, my Number One *was* the Number One. I never doubted it.

Wow, no song got more than two 1st-place votes.

Great poll, Tuomas, thanks for running it.

diffidently worth every cent!!! (WilliamC), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 22:30 (ten years ago) link

Oh man, voted for a diff Sylvester track, but so happy this placed at #1 - the top three being Mororder/Chic Corporation/Cowley is p.perfect, and I'm glad August Darnell & Arthur Russell got a look-in on the top 20.

etc, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 22:31 (ten years ago) link

MFSB, Jackie Moore, tamiko jones, Harry Thumann, Chaka Khan FUCKING CLOUDS! Unlimited Touch, bourgie bourgie ffs, the list goes on. And on and on.

Passengers/Risco Connection at #109/100 :(

Aw not even a single other vote for Hot Butterfly by Bionic Boogie.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 22:38 (ten years ago) link

Very enjoyable poll. It somehow managed to highlight how much disco I know, without necessarily knowing I know it, while at the same time reminding me of how much I don't know (plenty of completely unfamiliar-to-me tracks made it).

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 22:38 (ten years ago) link

In some cases it's just good to finally know, or be reminded of, artist and title for certain songs I love.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 22:39 (ten years ago) link

Yes, best poll ever. Major props to Tuomas, and I liked it that the results were spread out over a couple of weeks.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 22:41 (ten years ago) link

amazing how many in the range 101-200 i would have been happy to see in the top 20.

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 22:44 (ten years ago) link

Here are some observations of mine on the whole poll:

First of all, I'd like to say this was the best ballot poll I've ever seen on ILM! So thanks to everyone for participating and for voting such great tunes! In my personal opinion each and every tune in the top 30 is at least good if not great, and most of the other 70 is quality stuff too. I've never been so pleased with any poll results!

But if you allow me to be a bit negative, the biggest surprise in the poll was how badly Philly International fared. In the top 100, there was no MFSB, no Three Degrees, Blue Notes, Jean Carn, nor Teddy Pendergrass, and only one tune by the O'Jays and the Jones Girls. I didn't expect that.

On a more personal note, I would've wished for Sharon Redd and at least one of Boris Midney's projects (Beautiful Bend, Companion, USA-European Connection, etc) to have cracked the top 100. Redd is my personal favourite disco singer, but I know she isn't that big on ILM, so I was prepared for her not getting too many votes. But Midney I thought would have a chance, especially since most of his disco projects have been reissued during the last couple of years. Looking at the results, maybe Midney's poor showing is because ILM seems to like gritty funk disco and minimal electronic disco more than campy orchestral disco, the latter being Midney's forte. Other grandiose disco artists such as Alec R. Costandinos or First Choice didn't do so well in the poll either.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 23:09 (ten years ago) link

But like I said, all in all this has been great fun. Hope you've all found some cool new stuff to listen to, as well as some old favourites. Remember that Love Is the Message, and have a Disco Christmas!

That Machine thing at #6 sounds like Muppets do disco. No way is it better than "Keep It Comin' Love" or a lot of stuff that didn't place in the top 100. Seriously, "The Hustle" and "You Sexy Thing" didn't make the poll, but this did? Oi vey. That keyboard sound is horrible.

Thanks for your efforts, Tuomas.

about the Philly thing, Bad Luck would have made the top 100 had I discovered it in time. that's my one regret

g simmel, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 23:34 (ten years ago) link

I agree about the lack of Philly, and indeed of Sharon Redd. Jean Carn, MFSB, Harold Melvin and "In The Name Of Love" all got votes from me.

Thread of the decade. Truly the best music ever.

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Thursday, 19 December 2013 00:05 (ten years ago) link

The most surprising no-show in this was "Deputy of Love" by Don Armando's 2nd Avenue Rhumba Band.

As for Boris Midney, I voted for three of his productions.

Also, very important in its uplifting communality, which I've noticed when it gets played in feminist parties.

"feminist parties"! are those parties with a lot of feminists on the invite list, or parties where people discuss feminism, or parties where only appropriately feminist music is played, or…

As for the full results ... a lot of good, quite a bit of bad, all in all a very accurate representation of disco. I say that as an undying fan.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 December 2013 06:53 (ten years ago) link

Tho I reiterate I have no idea where this groundswell of "I Want Your Love" support came from.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 December 2013 06:54 (ten years ago) link

Someone upthread said only on ILM would "I Feel Love" place first in a disco poll, but I think it's safe to say that only on ILM would "I Feel Love" NOT place first in a disco poll.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 December 2013 06:55 (ten years ago) link

pretty fuckin' solid 101-110 imo:

101 KC & the Sunshine Band That's the Way (I Like It)
102 Love Unlimited Orchestra Love's Theme
103 Change The Glow of Love
104 Sister Sledge Thinking of You
105 Charlie Space Woman
106 Cloud One Disco Juice
107 Hot Chocolate Every 1's a Winner
108 Passengers He's Speedy Like Gonzalez
109 Risco Connections Ain't No Stopping Us Now (Version)
110 Sylvester I Need Somebody to Love Tonight

I want your love got a boost in the late 90s when moodyman sampled it for I can't kick this feeling when it hits and then another huge boost when todd terje's edit borrowed some of moodyman's repetitions. the track has been huge since the terje edit and terje is huge on ILM ergo this placement, i think.

Yeah, I was surprised too that "I Want Your Love" was the most popular Chic tune, I would've expected that position to go to "Le Freak" or "Good Times". I've never really followed the disco edit scene, but I guess that makes sense. Seems like there were other tunes in the top 100 too that were boosted by the mid-00s disco revival (Dennis Parker's "Like an Eagle", for example). Not that this is a negative thing, though: it's great that some awesome-but-less-known disco tunes reach new listeners! But it's always interesting to ponder why some things are revived and other not... Still waiting for some taste-makers to lift Boris Midney back into the disco canon.

Tuomas, Thursday, 19 December 2013 08:02 (ten years ago) link

If I'd voted my top 5 would have probably been:

1) Dennis Parker - Like an Eagle
2) Love Unlimited Orchestra - Love's Theme
3) Donald Byrd - Love has Come Around
4) Voyage - Souvenirs
5) Sister Sledge - Thinking of You

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Thursday, 19 December 2013 10:03 (ten years ago) link

Seems like there were other tunes in the top 100 too that were boosted by the mid-00s disco revival

I was surprised to see that "Let No Man Put Asunder" by First Choice didn't appear in this top 100. I forgot to submit a ballot but it would have been my number one. Maybe it was done to death in the late '80s to '90s and so didn't figure prominently in the recent revival (that's a guess because I have paid only limited attention to the revival)

It's funny because I started listening seriously to disco in 1978, but many earlier (even recent) records somewhat passed me by at that time, so I didn't really hear LNMPU (which was released in 1977) until the late '80s when I bought a Salsoul compilation that included it. I then became aware that it was regarded as an important record in terms of laying down the template for some house music. Even then, I was so into house music (perhaps in a rather superficial way) that it didn't really make a big impression on me. It's only really in the last ten or fifteen years that it's become a particular favourite of mine.

dubmill, Thursday, 19 December 2013 10:18 (ten years ago) link

Is there a particular reason for Supernature's high placing? aiui Love In C Minor is his most celebrated track, and Give Me Love seems to me his best, but neither of those even made the hundred.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 19 December 2013 10:24 (ten years ago) link

I think 'Supernature' might be better known in the UK? Though I'm not sure, certainly is amongst the friends of mine who dig disco. Not going to make any strong claims for the Lovich connection, tempted as I am.

emil.y, Thursday, 19 December 2013 10:37 (ten years ago) link

"Supernature" was effectively Hot Gossip's signature tune, so it enjoyed prolonged TV exposure.
