of course black people watch animes, but it's definitely white hipsters leading the charge in co-opting anime imagery for their art in 2013: i.e., Elite Gymnastics/Dead Girlfriends, Laurel Halo, Oneohtrix Point Never, etc

I love whiney's comment about black people appropriating anime via white people backtracking, conclusively proven by instances of black artists using anime-like imagery

mh, Monday, 16 December 2013 01:51 (ten years ago) link

unrelated but w/e

tuostprophets (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 16 December 2013 01:58 (ten years ago) link

if i have to spell it out, there's

A) black artists influenced by anime (kanye, chris breezy, waka's "bitch call me goku", my diamonds they say pikachu, they say pikachu) because it's a popular cultural artifact like anything else

B) And then there's a specific form of predominatelty white post-Altered Zones Tumblr electronic musician (ie, OPN, Elite Gs, Laurel Halo et al), who use anime imagery for trangression/internet points/#feels that predated like Flatbush Zombies or w/e.

I might have been projecting, but I assumed Kitty Pryde was excited that Jay-Z said "anime" because he was slumming in it her world of Young Tumblr people, just like the entire blogoverse shit their pants when Jay Z showed up at a Grizzly Bear show like that validated a predominately white scene

let's change the subject for no reason
https://medium.com/facts-only/b7deb1cb614c

like there's a dozen different places that would better belong, in the medium thread maybe but this one keeps popping up in my bookmarks

um, i didn't get the sense that kitty pryde was "freaking out" about the anime thing because it validated her own cultural existence

i think it was entirely "lol this old rapper sounds like a total weirdo trying to make a reference to a cultural phenomenon two decades removed from his own generation"

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 16 December 2013 04:07 (ten years ago) link

like, pretty much a default pre-25 y/o reaction to anything. i prob do it all the time \(o_O)/

the funny thing to me is that she didn't stop for a second and consider if "eat the cake/anime" made any sense at all then think about what else the line could've meant

aka people probably shouldn't consent to having unedited liveblogs posted to web sites with millions of monthly uniques

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 16 December 2013 04:13 (ten years ago) link

"A cultural phenomenon two decades removed from his own generation" how new do you think anime is

i mean adjust the timeline for however you see fit, i think my point stands

btw i know literally nothing about anime so i'm generalizing

its ok u can tell us abt ur anime

really? i think it goes back a decade further, that's when I started seeing huge all-anime sections in video stores etc.

extraterrestrial★squad (amateurist), Monday, 16 December 2013 04:59 (ten years ago) link

i think perhaps the cultural associations around anime have shifted, as cultural associations are wont to do, but I'd say anime fandom was a notable subculture in the 90s/early 00s (i.e. when kitty pryde was a zygote/urchin)

extraterrestrial★squad (amateurist), Monday, 16 December 2013 05:00 (ten years ago) link

come on dude

opn released a shitty video someone directed for him that was a weak satire of negative stereotypes about people who like anime, not a celebration of it or an attempt to score internet points by using anime aesthetics, laurel halo had an album cover with japanese schoolgirls committing harikari on it that didn't really have anything to do with anime

there is no art-tumblr internet anime appreciation cognoscenti, kitty/hemsworth/friendzone pokemon namedrops on twitter are just representative of the wider cultural penetration of 4chan and video games as a general thing

adult swim on cartoon network shows anime shows, the odd future show, and the boondocks which is literally an anime show about black culture and rap, to suggest that a bunch of obscure white electronic musicians most people have never heard of have a monopoly on anime references is just a completely bizarre new york internet music writer echo chamber bullshit assertion to make

but i guess this is the kitty pryde thread so whatever i mean if there wasn't a new york internet music writer echo chamber this thread wouldn't even be here

james, i would argue back, but it's basically the whole "Did Rihanna steal #seapunk's aesthetic" argument for a hypothetical Jay Z line that doesn't actually exist anywhere but as a mondegreen on a Noisey liveblog

let's all just bump this and call it a night

one year passes...

I'm just going to bump the thread and post this song from last year which was good, moving and got some positive write-ups (shout out to tsj but she's mostly ignored by everyone for some reason) .. anyway, just when you thought she was going to go away forever after the mild initial hype died away (admittedly I lost interest myself), and who could've blamed her with how ugly people of all sorts were being when talking about her, she went and did some gorgeous stuff and confirmed, I guess, that she will keep on creating music because she has things to say and show, and found a real new strength of voice- and I can conclude to myself that my initial interest was not misguided
