#1 on the iron man tourney when i left the house for dinner with my girl, came home two hours later to discover I placed in the 20-25 range grrrrrrrr

i feel ya bro. you gotta be on that shit like a hawk

Nhex, Saturday, 7 December 2013 04:17 (ten years ago) link

most annoying thing was that i was at 1086 when i ran out of health/first aid and figured okay i'll come back later to get that sweet sweet spiderman cover at 1100
picked up the pad an hour later and i was down to 895
so angry much sadness many yells

placed no 1 in my tourney -- tanked in a bunch of lightning rounds as suggested and i had a real nice run of it.

now my bracket is pretty rough for the thor event tho :-(

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Saturday, 7 December 2013 05:11 (ten years ago) link

all those covers still don't make my grey suit bw any good though!

can't figure out a good strategy for the thor event. all the battles seem to take down my health more than half, so i can't tear through a few teams on a single health pack.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Saturday, 7 December 2013 05:13 (ten years ago) link

god i wanted that Spider-Man cover so bad but competition was too fierce, i could barely break 1000 without getting knocked down again

great omg moment in devil dinosaur

Thor tourney is savage

Euler, Saturday, 7 December 2013 13:18 (ten years ago) link

the issue is that any thor over lv 60 is gonna fuck you up if you leave him for last and if you don't take out the other two, the computer will loop special attacks. I've played four matches and am ranked 120 or so which is crazy high considering, so i think most people are sitting this one out and focussing on the story missions where the point totals for the top ten are just ludicrous

i've had ok success with thor/wolvie/mBW in thor, but not great. i keep getting matched against like level 75 thors.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Saturday, 7 December 2013 17:53 (ten years ago) link

see i just got my thor to level 83 but it doesn't matter because with the buffs on this any moderately leveled thor is a beast

okay, i think i've figured this out: go in with thor at max level, daken and storm classic with +3 all and +3 red/yellow buffs. then either:
one shot kill the weakest guy with your red, knock out the second with your yellow and rush to knock out thor with all speed
or
red/yellow attack on thor below level 60 knocks him out and then take out the two weakers at your leisure.

at 37 and rising

that's totally the opposite approach that I have (which isn't consistently effective)
use the two weak enemies as targets until they die, using that time to build up ammo. prevent CPU from getting Red and Yellow gems which you need anyway.
unleash Classic Storm's blue power which stuns for 4 turns at max power, hopefully at that point you have enough to launch a few Red attacks and a Yellow Thunder Clap from Thor, and he's pretty much dead then

Nhex, Saturday, 7 December 2013 22:23 (ten years ago) link

this strat would probably work with modern black widow instead of modern storm, actually

Nhex, Saturday, 7 December 2013 22:25 (ten years ago) link

using storm and daken allows you to match greens when red/yellow aren't available for buffs and eventual AP recharge/screen clear storm attack

going in with a full red attack with thor means that you're two yellow matches away from knocking out a level 70 thor; i can generally finish a match in under a minute if i get a few lucky breaks. Made it to 25 on my ladder before i pushed my luck with a too-low-health thor and got my whole crew killed; taking some time off for sanity/gym/dinner

life is the moments between marvel puzzle quest

i like daken and modern storm pretty well as a combo. grab all the green and build up strike tiles, then use storm's green to grab a bunch of different ap, then hopefully you have enough to let thor's red/yellow loose. there's a bit more chance in this approach, but the powers complement nicely.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Saturday, 7 December 2013 22:32 (ten years ago) link

anyway, this strategy assumes you have your own lv 85 thor and humblebrag humblebrag

truly the humblest of brags tbh

at 5 on my ladder. taking a break there to do alaska again.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Saturday, 7 December 2013 22:33 (ten years ago) link

savage land is tough to level unless you are super focused on it i'm finding
god i wish we could league up so that we could all be doing group pvp. i never see ilxors on my potential kill list

Alaska reset, time to jump back in

Nhex, Saturday, 7 December 2013 22:58 (ten years ago) link

in the... which tournament was it? double shot maybbe? i pushed up to 500 right before close to get another model 40, then realized i needed thor cards more than grey suit black widow... needed #26 instead of #25. i was #25. tried to quickly lose against a couple of low-score teams and yield immediately... did it twice, checked again... like 30 points.

everyone underneath me was tanking for thor too.

maybe this is a sign he's too good or bw grey suit is too bad.

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Sunday, 8 December 2013 00:04 (ten years ago) link

I doubt it was intentional tanking - towards the end of the tournament everyone bumrushes and points go down super fast if you're in the top brackets

Nhex, Sunday, 8 December 2013 00:10 (ten years ago) link

20-25 were around 480-485; 26-30 were 455-460. big gap... maybe i thought it was intentional because I was doing it intentionally.

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Sunday, 8 December 2013 00:48 (ten years ago) link

I'm having a blast in savage, won an impossible match with the default level 6 Hawkeye, my l25 Raggie, and my l29 modern Black Widow, because I got a cascade giving me enough forests to do the super forest thing, a sea of red, which caused major cascading and AP gain and in particular both fed my Raggie to do 4 red blasts -> change to green, followed by another super forest thing, repeat until victor. I am still glowing.

Euler, Sunday, 8 December 2013 00:49 (ten years ago) link

also got a model 40 blue cover today on a standard cover draw, highlight of my week

Euler, Sunday, 8 December 2013 00:50 (ten years ago) link

i want some ragnarok covers like nobody's business

high level doom looks like a motherfucker as well.

got that doom cover in resupply this week, so now I've a 2 black cover l25 doom. three attack tiles! he'll be nice in a buffed villain round.

my son has a raggie with both red and green covers, so jealous

Euler, Sunday, 8 December 2013 00:59 (ten years ago) link

(this thread is what convos in my house are like these days btw)

Euler, Sunday, 8 December 2013 01:00 (ten years ago) link

heh. my rag has 2 red 1 green; 2 more red and we're in business

OMG stop giving me Red Modern Hawkeyes, The Hunt Heroic card generator

Nhex, Sunday, 8 December 2013 07:58 (ten years ago) link

Oh god I figured out how to play this, bye bye outside world.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Sunday, 8 December 2013 21:15 (ten years ago) link

Welcome to your Doom!

After burning way too many health packs last night, I decided to stop playing risky at all in the Thor tournament. Every match, I use the +1 to all AP stockpile boost, and an extra damage boost. Within 5 turns I can run my Iron Man 40 Recharge v2 (3 Red + Blue AP for each countdown tile) -> Modern Storm Blue Stun power (Stuns target for 4 turns, ~1200 dmg to enemy team) -> Clean up with Thor's Red and Yellow strikes. Easy peasy.

Nhex, Sunday, 8 December 2013 23:18 (ten years ago) link

Ugh hate fighting against Daken (my entire roster is under level 15), now I have to play the Waiting Game Hungry Hungry Hippos.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Monday, 9 December 2013 00:28 (ten years ago) link

breaking 200 in the hunt events is really hard. luckily i just have to break 400 to win the heroic token, which is all i really care about.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Monday, 9 December 2013 01:54 (ten years ago) link

2 heroic tokens today, 2 hawkeyes

shhfhejfdejbdgsyjf

Euler, Monday, 9 December 2013 02:08 (ten years ago) link

right??

Nhex, Monday, 9 December 2013 02:11 (ten years ago) link

What's the strategy for selling/keeping covers when your roster is maxed out? I have a 2-star Dark Hawkeye who's hard to level up because I can't find any covers for him, and I have a Juggernaut cover I'm waiting to recruit.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Monday, 9 December 2013 02:57 (ten years ago) link

4 hawkeyes. i don't even know.

i was at #1 on thor tourney while i was playing ten minutes ago, down to my final health token, ahead by 60 points. watched a bit of the jags/saints. Came back to find I am #6 and down by 55. I think i need to hang back and do a final push in the last half hour of this. very frustrating. i think the issue is that the higher up on the rankings you are, the more points you're worth and the more you lose when you get downed in pvp

argh, been playing for an hour and this is maddening. from #1 to #12 like a goddamn yo yo. And I'm winning every match!

lee: grind for hero points until you can buy more slots! its worth it to try to hang onto everyone i think. or that's just the obsessive in me...

new fun combo -- wolvie + rag. he powers up the strike tiles, and rag's red ability keeps feeding him green. i bet daken rag would be lotsa fun too (the advantage of wolvie is if you don't have another use for the green, then his strike tiles are way stronger, and you can build up a bit of green and each successive attack gets stronger).

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Monday, 9 December 2013 04:21 (ten years ago) link

(forks: some good advice i saw is to hang back a bit before you jump into a tourney because then you end up against more casual players -- there's v. little forward action in my competition bracket at all. also note that who you're matched against seems determined by your win/loss rate, etc. but who you're bracketed against is different, and seems just determined by when you first compete in the event)

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Monday, 9 December 2013 04:23 (ten years ago) link

this same advice doesn't seem as useful in hunt, where holding back just seemed to give me less capacity to catch up with other players, since its all about hitting the repeating missions every time they regenerate points.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Monday, 9 December 2013 04:24 (ten years ago) link

(also argh this game ate my life)

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Monday, 9 December 2013 04:24 (ten years ago) link

thanks for the suggestions clover; i will wait for future tourneys.

fought my way up to #2 in the final minutes, underestimated my opponent and went in with a too-low health thor, no more first aid, okay i'm at #2 at least with three minutes
currently at #7 with a minute on the clock. goddammit.

finished "top ten" so i guess i can live with that.

clover, what's your full lineup? i'm at:
thor - lv 85 max - 5/4/4 max
iron man 40 - lv 51 - 3/2/2
iron man 35 - lv 50 max - 5/4/4 max
storm modern - lv 50 max- 5/5/3 mx
black widow modern -lv 40 max - 5/5 max
juggernaut - lv 40 max - 5/5 max
daken - lv 34 - 5/5 max
cap murrica - lv 27 - 4/4/5 max
Doom - lv 25 - 2 black
hood - lv 25 - 2 yellow
storm classic - lv 24 - 5/5/3 max
magneto NOW - lv 22 - 2/3/1
spider man classic - lv 18 - 1 yellow, 1 blue
ragnarok - lv 28 - 1 green, 2 red
wolverine astonishing - lv 16 - 3/4/2
hawkeye - lv 15 - 5/5 max
venom - lv 15 - 5/5 max
black widow grey suit - lv 15 - 2 purple
loki - lv 15 - 1 black
bullseye - lv 12 - 4 black
hawkeye modern - lv 9 - 5/3/3
moonstone - lv 9 - 3/1/1
black widow original - lv 8 - 1 /1
spiderman bagman - lv 6 - 2 purple, 1 blue
yelena - lv 1 - 5/5 max

Working on leveling up daken to max, any recommendations of characters that might be worth trying to level higher if i have the covers already? does wolverine start getting good around lv 30? venom? any of the hawkeyes?

i guess i'm missing, jim lee magneto, invisible woman, punisher, wolverine x force and DEVIL DINOSAUR (cmon they gotta make him available at the end of this tourney) and i have four open slots and 75 coins so i should be able to keep a full roster indefinitely if i keep grinding.

is it because i'm an addict that having enough room for new covers has never been an issue? i would highly recommend NEVER spending coins on anything but new cover slots.

I was at #7 with one minute left. figured I could sit back.
five minutes later, i get the message that I finished "Top 25" - WAAUUUGH.

Classic Hawkeye is worth leveling up a teensy bit just because he's so good for those Hammer missions with his tile destroy abilities

they've been more generous with the coins lately - until the last week I was having a really hard time keeping pace
