when i was a kid and found out you could just buy frosting in the store, that they would just sell you a tub of nothing but icing, it blew my mind that adults didn't do this routinely. now i tend to prefer moderate to minimal amounts of icing.

Let them have it. I'm definitely in the not-too-much-icing camp. I believe that both the icing and the cake itself should taste good, and that too much icing usually indicates a cake that tastes of arse by itself.
