just the fabric of his images is so romantic, i think. he's a really bold photographer, which i think is revealed in his more conventionally street work, but that it's filtered through this (literal) incredible lens, that it's fashioned so romantically, is this whole other distinctive layer

Yeah
After reading the obit I unfortch read Bremser's take. I think he has a really good eye but I almost never agree with his writing
Like many of his best shots, your first reaction is: Why did he take that? When he was shooting Kodachrome in the 1950s there was no way to make the perfect little book that “Early Color” is, so he was shooting for some future audience that would both have the technology to reproduce the slides, and appreciate how he saw.
Think this ascribes too much agency. Some people shoot and never intend to show

I ashamedly put in an order for Early Color when I heard. It's something I should have done long ago

really keen to see all of those books. i was dithering over interlibrary loaning his B&W volume a couple of days ago, seeing afresh the pic i posted above & remembering its existence. i am totally sad that i will never get to go catsit for him in his beautiful apartment now but otherwise i think it's a kind of nice opportunity just to think of him, that he got the flush of recognition of the past few years & that those images are part of our vocabulary, now - hewn in extinct tones, rich with this otherworldly step, some stylist from nowhere. he was one of the best i think.
