Um, "everyone you know" is a pretty good definition of the society you live in, and coming up with a definition of "the law" that is at odds with the entire society you live in is as good a way as any to bring the judgment of that society down on your head. So I'm surprised it retains popularity since I thought people had copped onto its flaws.
