katie perry used to be xian singer right? you can ever erase that weird thing, that kind of "off-brand pop star" feeling that xian singers or bands give you...they are doomed to walk this planet as mr. pibbs and not dr. peppers

otm. people getting excited about cake is as much a part of being in the office as like, photocopying, or sitting in a meeting.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Friday, 29 November 2013 12:19 (ten years ago) link

I just can't remember the last time I got excited about cake. Birthday parties when I was a kid, I guess the whole candle thing was okay but the prospect of eating party-bag cake after it had been in the fridge for a few days was just enough to turn my stomach. Office cake sales and office birthday cake too, just who cares?

a beef supreme (dog latin), Friday, 29 November 2013 12:25 (ten years ago) link

I like cake as much as the next man, or perhaps a tiny bit less, but it is like a religion to some people. I also feel like it's become more of a thing for some reason in the UK, like people baking, British Bakeoff, and this guilt/obsession/ohgivemeanotherpiecethen!! hysteria that comes with cake, and cake in offices.

I know offices are awful but I don't think cake is the solution.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Friday, 29 November 2013 12:31 (ten years ago) link

It's like part of the cycle at work where people talk about going to the gym, or being on a diet, or they eat or bake cake. I mean, we're animals.

I like to think I have learnt a thing or two about music (Neil S), Friday, 29 November 2013 12:36 (ten years ago) link

Cake is not a complete solution but it's a small step in the right direction. I know there's a lot of showing off involved sometimes but it's nice to remind the people you spend most of your day with that you care enough to make them something. The imported obsession with sickly cupcakes and the twee British gin-and-teacups thing are both awful, obviously, but office + cake is better than office - cake.

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Friday, 29 November 2013 12:42 (ten years ago) link

We used to get cake every time it was someone's birthday which does get a bit ridiculous sometimes, as there are clusters of birthdays together at certain times of year. This mostly stopped when someone complained they couldn't eat the cake because they have a lactose intolerance, the directors were like fuck it then nobody gets cake now. I think on balance some cake beats no cake.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 29 November 2013 12:45 (ten years ago) link

I've kind of stopped getting up to go and get some cos I'm so unhealthy from all the cake cos I just fear for the health impact. I eat chocolate now and again but I find it would be too easy to just have unhealthy crap every day at work, I generally manage to abstain most of the time.

I guess I agree with you SV, better an office where people try even if it does get a bit twee, I've worked places where nobody ever talked to each other, but I feel like it can seem forced.

Or that maybe I like my co-workers well enough to work with and not much more than that, and I suspect that's how everyone feels, and we prob should all just be okay with that.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Friday, 29 November 2013 12:50 (ten years ago) link

We have a collection envelope and card sent round every time it's somebody's birthday. In a large office you can imagine it gets ridiculous as birthdays do tend to clump together and you can be asked to put-in up to three times a day some weeks. Always seems to come around the day before pay day too. I'd opt out and ask people not to bother come my birthday, but how else am I going to recoup what I've put in over the year? I guess it's like a savings scheme.

It's good because it keeps the cake for those who want to bake/eat it. Everyone else just has an average level of cake hysteria.

good cake is good, bad cake is sickly and pointless. such a range between the two tho, can't really umbrella it all as just "cake"

basically that sponge and butter icing shit that shop-bought kids' birthday cakes almost inevitably consist of is v. wrong, but you can't fuck with a decent coffee and walnut for example

They order cake at my job every month. It's arrival in the afternoon is always announced over the p.a.by one of the senior editors who says it in this funny voice that makes everyone laugh.

Half of the office rises from their desk, walks down the hallway, and sings happy birthday, usually to the cake itself apparently since any birthday members with their name on the cake wouldn't be caught dead in front of that crowd. Then the cake is cut apart and segmented on to paper plates.

I usually get up from my desk about 20 minutes after the announcement is made and get my piece. Unlike in Office Space, it doesn't get eaten fast, so there's always plenty left. Last time, I went straight for the middle edge where the chocolate meets the vanilla part and got a flower in the process. Hey, it was my birthday after all and someone had already eaten my name.
