I think outside of my mum's Beatles albums that's probably the most valuable vinyl I own

space bl00ps (NickB), Saturday, 23 November 2013 23:25 (ten years ago) link

oh wait i was talking balls when i said first pressing. i have the same one as that ebay one, which is the third pressing. First pressing has the wide ffss band on the label and goes for waaaaay more money:

guess i'm still learning, but a hell of a charity shop find nonetheless

Those Britten Rostropovich duo recordings are so great. There is another one with the Debussy sonata that's probably my favorite of that piece.

Pressgang Wolf (Jon Lewis), Sunday, 24 November 2013 00:01 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I have actually been looking out for the Debussy one on vinyl. Not given this one a listen yet but have been picking up a ton of Rostropovich recently - Schubert string quintet with the Melos quartet, Dvorak cello concerto w/ Karajan, all good stuff

space bl00ps (NickB), Sunday, 24 November 2013 00:15 (ten years ago) link

Other than that I've been hammering the violin records, other things I got today were...

Schneiderhan - Mozart violin concertoes 2 & 3
Heifetz/Munch - Mendelssohnn & Prokofiev violin concertoes
Kyung-Wha Chung/Previn - Tchaikovsky & Sibelius vioin concertoes

space bl00ps (NickB), Sunday, 24 November 2013 00:24 (ten years ago) link

hey why not add an e to concertos every time i type it

space bl00ps (NickB), Sunday, 24 November 2013 00:30 (ten years ago) link

a trip to mansfield

a poet and Educational Consultant based in Peterborough (nakhchivan), Sunday, 24 November 2013 23:47 (ten years ago) link

did it on the strength of those three visible sleeves and the few emi red corners i could spot.

recognise the kleiber pastoral on decca and one of the other sleeves is rostropovich and giulini. any guesses on the third?

looks like someone just trying to quickly clear a collection they've inherited rather than a dealer trying to ditch their shit. reckon you can't collect 3,000 albums and not have some gold in there *somewhere*

space bl00ps (NickB), Sunday, 24 November 2013 23:49 (ten years ago) link

dumb thing is that i was in mansfield four weeks ago and couldn't find shit in the charity shops

space bl00ps (NickB), Sunday, 24 November 2013 23:50 (ten years ago) link

right it looks like a good purchase

borrowing the wife's car, now wishing i'd attempted to drive it more than two mies in the last 18 months

space bl00ps (NickB), Sunday, 24 November 2013 23:54 (ten years ago) link

was listening to giulini's britten serenade earlier this evening too, definitely the man of the hour

How did it turn out? All duds?

Evan, Monday, 2 December 2013 20:18 (ten years ago) link

NickB I feel for you, I bought & sorted a 10,000-record collection in summer of 2012 and I think it took a few months off my life.

sleeve, Monday, 2 December 2013 20:45 (ten years ago) link

at the eleventh hour i emailed the guy back and told him that i was slightly worried that the original photo he posted wasn't a representative sample of the actual contents. he swore that he had now separated out all the easy listening stuff and that it was now all 100% classical. i asked him for some further sample photos and got back shots of several records by mantovani and a bunch of budget line light orchestral comps, so at that stage i told him i was bailing and now i'm just waiting for the refund. there were lots of assorted charity shop price stickers on the follow-up pictures and it turns out he'd bought a pallet of records off "some guy" who i'm guessing must have been in the waste collection business. could still have been a few gems in there but basically it was garbage. whether the initial photo was a fluke or deliberate i don't know. seller was slightly pissed off, but it ended up being too much of a risk for me to waste a day and a tank of petrol on...

exciting vampire castle (NickB), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:33 (ten years ago) link

dodged a bullet there imo

sleeve, Monday, 2 December 2013 21:34 (ten years ago) link

went to a charity shop and found some cheap scott walker vinyl instead. we came through....

exciting vampire castle (NickB), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:35 (ten years ago) link

swore that he had now separated out all the easy listening stuff = this is a clear giveaway

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:36 (ten years ago) link

a shame but probably caveat ebayor

i still of course harbour completely unrealistic dreams of finding a huge stack of treasure somewhere, probably just around the next corner

These are the oldest, rarest and most expensive pressings. In addition, they are also the poorest sounding and usually in the worst condition.

lol

brimstead, Friday, 27 November 2015 05:40 (eight years ago) link

he really lays into record dealers every chance he gets, it's a hoot

Caution - The reader is now going to enter a bizarre world of fantasy, paranoia, ego, greed and wishful thinking: The Fantasy, Egotistical (and Greedy) World of Decca Record Collectors and Dealers

ha, this is great.

no lime tangier, Friday, 27 November 2015 06:29 (eight years ago) link

also, they're spot on about the decca headline series sounding incredible!

no lime tangier, Friday, 27 November 2015 06:31 (eight years ago) link

huh interesting what he has to say about the mercury golden imports which i almost always completely ignore and don't play when i get them. will have to listen to some i guess.

scott seward, Saturday, 28 November 2015 00:20 (eight years ago) link

while there are definitely labels that have a high percentage of great sound, he is correct in saying that it depends on the record. not the pressing, but the actual individual record that you have in your hands. (though it could be said of any kinda record i guess. i don't CALL records hot stampers but all records are not created equal.)

i can play 10 DGG records from the same era and in the same near mint condition and maybe get one truly superior record.

scott seward, Saturday, 28 November 2015 00:26 (eight years ago) link

What are some of the best classical guitar records or artists to look for? Segovia is obvious but I don't know enough about the "scene" and the highlights in it.

i picked up this Rostropovich/Britten album over the weekend, it's pretty amazing. i think this LP was referred to upthread maybe?
