someone told me I should be applying an SPF moisturizer daily. I know everyone likes to advise this but is it actually really all that crucial?

Also, what on earth am I supposed to buy exactly that is non-greasy, non-smelly, and not like $40?

ppl seem to like this jack black stuff

Homo schaduwkabinet (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 23 November 2013 22:43 (ten years ago) link

i'm using the elta md stuff that la lechera recommended - it's pretty good (silky texture, no chalkiness, no white cast, not eye-irritating, not drying).

my FIL recently got a huge chunk of flesh removed from his face bc of skin cancer most likely caused by sun damage, so yeah, you probably should be wearing ss every day.

just1n3, Saturday, 23 November 2013 23:38 (ten years ago) link

my dermatologist told me to use it -- it's $29 but i've been using the same bottle for three months at least and that is $10/mo., which isn't bad for melanoma insurance. what i really like about it is that it doesn't burn my eyes, give me zits, and is not greasy/smelly. also i have never seen it advertised, so i don't feel like i'm paying for celebrity endorsement/an inferior product.

everyone's got different needs, but i do think that ss is a good idea. before that i used some neutrogena stuff that was ok except kinda stingy on the eyes and my eyes are sensitive to stingy things.

sweat pea (La Lechera), Saturday, 23 November 2013 23:46 (ten years ago) link

I believe I have previously confessed this but I don't wear sunscreen in the winter for the following reasons:

1. It's dark by 5 so my total sun exposure on any given day adds up to less than 15 minutes if even that. I figure I need the vitamin D.
2. My skin gets soooooo dry and no sunscreen is thick/moisturizing enough to counter Chicago winter.

I definitely wear it in the summer.

carl agatha, Sunday, 24 November 2013 00:52 (ten years ago) link

i wear sunscreen AND moisturizer!

sweat pea (La Lechera), Sunday, 24 November 2013 02:18 (ten years ago) link

Which Elta do you wear? I have a sunscreen now but it's pretty drying. I think I need a new one.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Sunday, 24 November 2013 04:54 (ten years ago) link

the shiseido ss and, to a lesser extent, the neutrogena ss were both drying for me, but i'm not having that problem with the elta stuff at all.

just1n3, Sunday, 24 November 2013 05:07 (ten years ago) link

not sure which one ll is using but this is the one i got

just1n3, Sunday, 24 November 2013 05:09 (ten years ago) link

that's a good point; my daily sun exposure is like prob a total of 20 or 30 minutes a day entirely before 8:30 am so like idk how much I'd need this

Homo schaduwkabinet (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 24 November 2013 05:11 (ten years ago) link

Melanoma aside, sun damage also causes wrinkles.

Check out this truck driver whose left side was exposed to more sun than his right:

If you put on SPF moisturizer in the am how long does it realistically last?

Homo schaduwkabinet (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 24 November 2013 16:14 (ten years ago) link

Holy fucking shit at the truck driver.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Sunday, 24 November 2013 16:22 (ten years ago) link

Stevie I don't recall how much it costs, but I like the La Roche Posay daily moisturizer; it is SPF 15 which some might say is too low, but it has a very high PPD and good stability (according to sunscreen chemistry geeks on makeupalley). For daily use, especially in winter, this works well for me--doesn't look or feel icky and doesn't sting my eyes the way most stuff does. I don't need much in the moisturizing department, so this is fine for that, too.

In Baja I wore hard-core La Roche Posay Derma-Peds SPF 50+, which you can't get in the US why because FDA. I stock up at Duty Free shops whenever I can. It doesn't irritate and lasts and lasts, even with lots of H20ing.

quincie, Sunday, 24 November 2013 16:52 (ten years ago) link

Oh the LRP daily moisturizer is at CVS and maybe Walgreens; only the Derma-Peds is hard to get a hold of.

quincie, Sunday, 24 November 2013 16:52 (ten years ago) link

Here's what I learned:

  • UVA is the thing that causes wrinkles
  • Kiehl's Facial Fuel SPF 15 does not have UVA blockers
  • Lab Series, Anthony Logistics, and the Kieh's SPF 50 all block UVA but are crazy expensive (like $40 for a 1.5-3oz bottle)
  • Jack Black blocks UVA and is $17 for 1.5oz so I think I am going to try that

Homo schaduwkabinet (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 24 November 2013 19:26 (ten years ago) link

I just use Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 thing (day moisturiser with SPF 15) and it lasts quite a while.
It's on the thicker side, I think.

Y-I-K-E-S! I use the Neutragena UVA/UVB protection.

Anyone making and using their own powder foundation? I had heard it is worth just buying since it supposedly helps fight sun damage as well. Mine has gone up in price.

three months pass...

Tonight begins my experiment using African black soap.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 26 February 2014 03:00 (ten years ago) link

That's the first time I've heard off it *goes off to google*!

quincie, Wednesday, 26 February 2014 03:09 (ten years ago) link

Re our previous talks about keratosis pilaris: mine completely disappeared after I stopped using soap on the afflicted areas. At first I just stopped using soap, after reading something online that made me realize I didn't actually need to wash my arms and legs. The kp disappeared, and then I started using a salt body scrub some days and a salux cloth others, and my skin is bump free and super soft (I also use almond and apricot oils as a moisturizer).

just1n3, Thursday, 27 February 2014 22:24 (ten years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Coconut oil is not cutting it, at all, as lotion. I get out of the shower and put it on and go to sleep and by the next morning there are scaly patches on my arms and legs again. Just bought corn meal again after being out of it for a few weeks, and I'm excited to remove several of the uppermost layers of skin on most of my body.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 13:08 (ten years ago) link

I've been lifting sheets of skin off my face with packing tape for weeks now. Really tired of this.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 13:13 (ten years ago) link

omg wut

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 14:52 (ten years ago) link

Try layering, maybe? Like, for my face I use a mixture of oils while in the shower, then I slap on a good moisturizer after that. You could also try a thin layer of aquaphor over the oil, to seal it.

just1n3, Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:37 (ten years ago) link

African Black soap working well so far. Also got some fancy pants moisturizer that supposed to be really good so I'm pretty excited to start using that. Using Retin-A pretty regularly still and that's going well too. For body I'm alternating between coconut oil and AmLactin and that's been working brilliantly.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:17 (ten years ago) link

I'm trying to use what I have because I owe so much money and don't really have prospects for getting a lot more, but I'm going to have to deal with buying some $30 moisturizer and skipping lunch a few more days because fucking A.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:42 (ten years ago) link

do not skip lunch, just moisturize more than 1x a day?

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:48 (ten years ago) link

It's more like the lotion is just not working. It gets on the surface but my skin still feels tight and peels? First turns hard and scaly and then peels like it's been burned. Around which, of course, it breaks out in oily whiteheads. Think I'm reacting badly to everything I try. Back to expensive brand counter that at least doesn't HURT me.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:57 (ten years ago) link

Been using body lotion and odds and ends of free samples on my face all winter w p good results but ran out of the Creme por le Corps (lol my French) from Kiehls and no other lotion is safe. Even this Aveda one is peeling me like an onion.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:06 (ten years ago) link

are you sure it's not the cleanser/soap?

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:10 (ten years ago) link

I've changed that up a few times, too. Same. Just really tired of "getting ready" routine having to include removing/covering up my peeling and redness for 10 minutes first.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:17 (ten years ago) link

Sorry to unload itt, it's been going on for a couple of months at different levels. Maybe I'm not eating of something? My hands split even though I moisturize them 6x a day, my arms and legs are rough...my skin hates me.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:19 (ten years ago) link

*eating enough

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:19 (ten years ago) link

are you drinking enough plain old water?

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:21 (ten years ago) link

sorry that is an annoying question but i can tell usually within a day when i am not properly hydrated from within. it's like i can feel my brain shriveling up.

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:22 (ten years ago) link

xxpost not like I'm any kind of authority but it sounds like a reaction to something yr using, or something in yr diet

stress could be part of it too imo

i would stop cleansing/moisturizing altogether with what you are using & (if you can) switch to something suuuuper mild. cetaphil or cerave. don't go to the expensive counter til you know for sure what's causing this imo, or it'll be a waste of precious moola

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:34 (ten years ago) link

yeah, also my hair/skin/nails get really brittle when i'm stressed or not eating enough!

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:50 (ten years ago) link

in orbit...would you mind posting a pic of this peeling? Or send one to me?

kate78, Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:46 (ten years ago) link

Thanks for caring, you two! I'll try Cetaphil/Cerave again and see if it works better this time; as veg says, if it doesn't work, at least it's cheap.

xp oh I forget we have a specialist! I haven't washed my face yet today so it's not bad yet but I can take one later and send to you?

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:49 (ten years ago) link

kate to the rescue!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:50 (ten years ago) link

I think the face scaliness was from using this sunscreen that someone at Sephora recommended. I said I could only tolerate physical blocks and not chemical ones, and she said it was a physical agent, but I still reacted.

Their Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve face cream was an okay moisturizer but I had to apply a lot to relieve my dryness.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:55 (ten years ago) link

that all sounds pretty bad, io - like, more than just basic-level dryness. not to freak you out or anything, just saying that it sounds like an asshole to deal with. sympathies :/

just1n3, Thursday, 20 March 2014 19:55 (ten years ago) link

hope you can get it under control inexpensively

extreme skin discomfort is a huge bummer, can really fuck with you mentally (or at least it did with me)

hang in there!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:05 (ten years ago) link

I mean apart from being named "Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve," which, come the f on!

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:21 (ten years ago) link

lol @ fresh lotus youth preserve
decent band name though?

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:22 (ten years ago) link

Totes.
