God damn me, I'm kinda liking the Lakers this year. 2 dudes on my fantasy team (Kobe & Kwame) + TV announcers that don't sound like Hawk Harrelson homers (CHICAGO BULLS I'm looking right @ you stupid asses) + WTF assistance from Farmar Superstar (copyright G. Cosloy) & SMUSH + the triangle in all its glory = FUN!

I watched this Lakers / Bulls game a few weeks ago, and it was the perfect example of what NOT to do. The announcers were actually telling Kobe to sit down after he fouled out! And when they weren't doing that, they were waxing Michael Jordan's pole, because IN NO WAY is Kobe one-fiftieth the player MJ was, so let's spend 6 straight possessions belaboring that point. (I want to say Stacey King was the one that couldn't shut up, because LOL @ Stacey King.)
The Celtics announcers are total homers (I mean, god, Tom Heinsohn is King Homer), but Tommy can also make a good point once in a while, and Mike Gorman's the perfect semi-impartial, totally-professional foil for him. Joel Meyers (sic?), the Lakers broadcaster, is totally pro-Lakers, but he doesn't turn every LA contest into a "GOOD GUYS WIN" sort of dick-off.
You can support the team you work for w/out painting your face and yelling DEFENSE into the microphone. Even disregarding that these formerly regional broadcasts are now available nationwide, it'd behoove these shitwits to maybe think of the local viewership audience that'd like to watch a basketball game & not a pep rally.

the lakers have been good, but not really as good as their record. if everyone is healthy and playing, i still like houston and denver better.
those mamba slippers have a sort of post-apocalyptic burger king vibe.

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. -- A man walking down the street at bar-closing time with a $190 cake in his arms claimed Los Angeles Lakers center Kwame Brown swiped his birthday treat.
But authorities said the cake caper won't be prosecuted.
In a police report, Alexander Martinez said he left his 30th birthday celebration at the Shore Restaurant and Lounge at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday with the uneaten 2-by-2-foot cake and walked north toward the Blue 32 nightclub.
Martinez told police he first came upon Lakers forward Ronny Turiaf, who he said agreed to pose for a photograph with him and the chocolate cake.
But outside of Blue 32, the 6-foot-11, 270-pound Brown came along, grabbed the cake and threw it at Martinez, according to the report. Brown got into a white limousine and left, Martinez claimed in the report, although he didn't suggest any reason for the cake toss.
Martinez reported that he then walked up to Lamar Odom as the Lakers forward left Pedone's Pizza and confronted him about the cake, which was splattered on the birthday man's back.
A man believed to be Odom's bodyguard pushed Martinez into the street, yelling at him to get away from Odom, the police report said.
"Calm down, he didn't do anything," Odom told the man believed to be his bodyguard, the report said.
Everyone then went their separate ways and Martinez filed a police report 12 hours later.
Detectives presented a possible "grand theft of a person" case to the city attorney's office, which decided not to prosecute.
Brown wasn't talking, but Lakers spokesman John Black said the team was aware of the alleged incident and had been told prosecutors were not filing charges. Black had no other comment.
The Lakers are on a three-game road trip through Saturday.
Brown, averaging 8.7 points and 6.6 rebounds, has been sidelined since spraining his right ankle on Dec. 31. He is expected back in about two weeks.

where is the love for the los angeles lakers?
Love, I cannot say. Hate is present and accounted for.

glen rice was still pretty deadly, he was just the decoy probably more than was warranted, phil didn't seem to like him for whatever reason. what sticks out to me is vlade + rick fox over sedale ("the thief!"), ceballos, ron harper and probably a shitload of the old old timers. some players are downgraded cos of the lean years they contributed to played in, including luke imo, which is fair enough i guess.

"glen rice was still pretty deadly"
Uh not really. He was pretty much a waste in his year and a half there.

I don't know what dude you are remembering, but he was a mediocre shooter at best in his time with LA and he was a lousy defender per usual.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 03:29 (fourteen years ago) link
ok those two years he put up 17.5 and 16 ppg respectively in the regular season as 3rd option to fn shaq & kobe, in the first championship run (which saw more knee problems and yeah bad d newsflash) he averaged 41% on threes in the playoffs and was more key than YOUUUUU remember dude
― CHILLS (tremendoid), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 08:21 (fourteen years ago) link
per some article jerry west cited phil's misuse (iho) of rice as one of the reasons for leaving although come to think of it if i traded eddie jones away and wanted to play it off i'd say some bs like that too. or maybe prime eddie wouldn't make yr 12 man rotation either hmmmm
― CHILLS (tremendoid), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 08:29 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah he was keyly averaging 12 pts a game on 40% shooting, getting no rebounds and basically getting torched by whatever small forward/big guard he was pretending to defend during that championship run. No surprise he wasn't back next year.

I thought Eddie Jones was great btw. He would have been great under Jackson too.

heck yeah i mean i would have rather kept him obv. (also thought it was odd FINALLY getting rid of elden right as he started playing worth a dang, but i didn't complain, too many years of frustration there) but pure shooting helped that team like nobody's business. no minute rice wouldve meant a dynasty deferred. who knew fish wd shoot the fuck out the ball the next year
