The first trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV was released on March 29, 2007 at 22:00 UTC. The official GTA IV site was down before for a half hour before the trailer was up. At the time the trailer was released, it was available for about a minute before being completely overloaded. This trailer shows that GTA IV is set in Liberty City (New York City) and the main character is an immigrant with and Eastern European accent. It shows Times Square as well as many other familiar landmarks. The trailer page is currently unavailable, but some visitors were able to view it in its entirety.

admrl, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:20 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, it worked! It looks fantastic, predictably. I can't imagine a life where I won't be buying it.

admrl, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:22 (seventeen years ago) link

The first link Kingfish posted just finished downloading. It looks beautiful.

V, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Bits of French Connection, Leon?

admrl, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Awesome. Now what are we supposed to do until October? I guess I'll have to get Vice City Stories.

adam, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Liberty City is the best setting anyway. If they can incorporate some sort of pleasant countryside mayhem all the better. Crashing planes into Hamptons mansions or something.

adam, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:27 (seventeen years ago) link

i chickened out from d/ling a file called "gta4.wmv" directly to my work pc. is it on youtube yet?

kingfish, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Looks awesome, I only wish they would have stuck with a main character without a personality.

calstars, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:34 (seventeen years ago) link

fuck that, having a guy w/ a voice was great, especially when CJ would yell random shit at perfect times, like being all stressed cuz you're in a race or a getaway and hitting some random passing car, where CJ would scream "Aw man, fuck YOU" or "SHIT!" .

or CJ's idle animation, where he would start singing "Young Hearts," before catching himself.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:53 (seventeen years ago) link

is there music? some goon reported it had Philip Glass stuff on there.

kingfish, Thursday, 29 March 2007 22:57 (seventeen years ago) link

ah, here we are:

This trailer shows that GTA IV is set in New York City and the main character is an immigrant with an Eastern European accent, who says, "Life is complicated. - I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different." It shows Times Square as well as many other familiar landmarks, including the "GetaLife Building", an obvious parody of the MetLife Building. All of the cars and buildings seem to indicate a present-day setting. The trailer parodied Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi as it used Philip Glass's original music from the film as well as emulated time-lapsed filming.[citation needed] The trailer's tone is substantially darker than that of the previous games in the series.

kingfish, Thursday, 29 March 2007 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, that guy is going to look pretty ridiculous doing Sanchez motorcycle tricks while listening to The Strokes or whatever.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 29 March 2007 23:12 (seventeen years ago) link

So in what era is this mofo set?

Leee, Thursday, 29 March 2007 23:55 (seventeen years ago) link

New York. There are scenes of the Statue of Liberty, the Chrysler building, and the Flatiron building.

calstars, Thursday, 29 March 2007 23:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Get in!

Extremely pleased it's back in Liberty City/NY. And it looks fucking gorgeous.

and oooh the roller coaster !

Ste, Friday, 30 March 2007 00:03 (seventeen years ago) link

So, is it really Liberty City?

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 30 March 2007 03:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I meant what decade is it set in?

Leee, Friday, 30 March 2007 05:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Just watched it on the youtube (looks 4real), and it sounds like early Aughties?

Leee, Friday, 30 March 2007 05:30 (seventeen years ago) link

So, this coming on out both PS3 and Xbox360 right?

treefell, Friday, 30 March 2007 08:09 (seventeen years ago) link

It's Liberty City but it looks nothing like the original and a lot more like the real NY. I guess that was part of the tagline "things will be different"

The opening scene with the subway train looked the most similar to the old Liberty City tho.

Will the actual game footage have different graphics, I noticed around the ferry port scene they had a lot of high detailed garbage in the water which probably won't be there in game mode. Although GTA cut scenes have always been just in-game graphics. ?

But it's nice to know where we are now :)

Ste, Friday, 30 March 2007 08:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Why must the internet taunt me with things I can't have :(

kv_nol, Friday, 30 March 2007 09:29 (seventeen years ago) link

You're not going to get it? Or do you mean because it's not out yet?

Ste, Friday, 30 March 2007 10:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Holy shit! PC version should be out when, I wonder?

I better start saving up for a new PC by the look of that.

Pashmina, Friday, 30 March 2007 10:43 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not out yet :(

Also Pash very sadly OTM. I think I'll wait to see what it needs and get that instead. Or I'll snap and get a 360, I am not paying €700 for a PS3!!

kv_nol, Friday, 30 March 2007 12:03 (seventeen years ago) link

PS3 price cut in October predicted

Still not worth it.

onimo, Friday, 30 March 2007 12:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Will we get PC version a year after release like GTA:SA? If this ends up console only, I'll be rather upset.

g-kit, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:24 (seventeen years ago) link

It looks like it's set pretty present-day to me. IGN has some screenshots of the Times Square part, and the ads, cars and fashions look pretty contemporary-- and no way are they going to have the WTC in the game, even conspicuous by its absence.

Come to think of it, what'd they do for Ground Zero in Spiderman 2 and True Crime 2? Did they address it as space in the financial district, or just pretend it wasn't there?

antexit, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Is it called GTA IV because it's the fourth of the versions set in 3D? or because it goes (title wise) ;

GTA I
GTA II
GTA III
GTA Vice City
GTA San Andreas
GTA IV

or is it simply a double edged sword?

Ste, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I believe that the popular reasoning is b/c GTA3/VC/SA were more or less three different versions of the same game.

Or maybe even the third generation of GTA games, who knows how these guys think.

kingfish, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

The latter. The main series is I, II, III and IV. All are set in Liberty City, IIRC, except maybe GTA2, which had either multiple cities or multiple boroughs (burroughs?), I can't remember. London 1969, Vice City, and San Andreas don't count in the main "numerical" line-- they're more like mods. Just really, really fucking amazing mods.

At least that's how I understand it.

Will M., Friday, 30 March 2007 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Grrrrrrrrxpost

I remember each numbered game being a new echelon of awesome as I played thme (I was so addicted to GTA 1, then 2 blew my mind becuase theree were factions, then 3... well, you know. i might actually give up sex for 4, from the look of that trailer)

Will M., Friday, 30 March 2007 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

it all makes sense now, thank you

(although I think San Andreas was slightly more than just a mod for GTA3)

Ste, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

GTA2 was indeed pretty neat, but I was always a little confused as to where it was supposed to be set. It all seemed a bit mixed up with it's fads.

Better than London though, which was god awful and just seemed to be a huge rush job.

Ste, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Pash, with careful shopping and self-building, new GTA4-capable PC would deffo be cheaper than a PS3. This assumes that we will actually get a PC release, obv.

g-kit, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait, we have to give up sex to get this? I'm not so sure I want it that badly!

kv_nol, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:56 (seventeen years ago) link

GTA IV i mean.

kv_nol, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I wonder if this will have anything to do with the other GTA games, or if it really will be completely different. I just don't know how they can rationalize the old Liberty City suddenly becoming bigger and more NYC-like, especially if both GTAIII and GTAIV take place during the same time.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm willing to give them the retcon when they faithfully recreate new york that well. can you imagine, like, if it were to scale? fucking driving from staten to jersey in real time? but also running people over? mental.

we don't HAVE to give up sex... but i WOULD. well, i would if they made a dead-rising-gta-iv mashup where you have to escape a new york completely filled with zombies. THAT would be the best game ever.

Will M., Friday, 30 March 2007 16:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I am not paying €700 for a PS3!!

kv_nol, I thought you were a Yank?

Leee, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:18 (seventeen years ago) link

GTA1 had multiple cities too - Liberty City, Vice City and San Andreas were all in GTA1.

I'm pretty sure Spider-Man 2 put a park at the WTC site.

The Yellow Kid, Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:53 (seventeen years ago) link

PP, the Liberty City map in GTA3 wasn't exactly identical to its counterparts in GTA1 and 2, I don't think-- Matter of fact, aside from having the some of same neighbourhoods, I don't think they're anything alike. What's the problem? New technology, new iteration, new map. You don't really want to be playing on the same old maps anyway, do you?

antexit, Saturday, 31 March 2007 14:49 (seventeen years ago) link

They're terrible characters. Also driving those hogs is shitty

Seany's too Dyche to mention (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 29 October 2019 04:09 (four years ago) link

Srsly.

Only reason I'm trying to beat this game is because (1.) I've only got four or five missions left. (2.) I'm looking forward to blowing up that depressing clubhouse and (3.) I get to kill this guy:
