all i know is that that song 'antillas' samples a charles chepkwony song and i can't figure out which. fuck this bullshit.

elan, Friday, 14 March 2008 00:40 (sixteen years ago) link

so if you like that guitar sound check chepkwony

elan, Friday, 14 March 2008 00:40 (sixteen years ago) link

so maybe it's not a chepkwony song if i can't find the sample, but it sounds like chepkwony and he is a genius

so, all i know

^That is really good news.

I just heard it for the first time in a local record store. Even just from hearing 5-6 songs in there, I can tell it's the obvious best record of 2007 that I was missing last year.

I like this but I don't understand why Instituto Mexicano del Sonido has been overlooked while this is being hyped to the maximum.

this is pretty good - a little bit repetitive for my taste and not as murky as Person Pitch. Not sure if it was worth the $30 I had to spend on it :(

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 27 June 2008 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah when is the XL version coming out?

Alex in SF, Friday, 27 June 2008 18:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Definitely one of the greatest bits of Sonar, and he only played instead of a DJ set because Konono no.! pulled out, a mixed blessing.

it's hillllllarious how people will do ANYTHING to distance themselves from what's considered "cool" or "good", a la saying "el guincho is much better than panda bear". aside from the obvious musical superiority of person pitch, what alegranza has is utter soullessness. i think it's a great album, but one's a party album and one's art. whatever, keep striving to be different

Kevin Keller, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:03 (fifteen years ago) link

El Guincho is much better than Panda Bear. Yay for soullessness.

Alex in SF, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:06 (fifteen years ago) link

"but one's a party album and one's art"

I was trying to figure which one is which in your equation, but then I decided I didn't care.

Alex in SF, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

xposts. are you a sockpuppet?

Although I do agree that Person Pitch is the better album.

what U cry 4 (jim), Friday, 24 October 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I like Person Pitch more than Allegranza but the argument that one is a party album and one is art, or that one is soulless, is such bullshit that I want to change my ranking of the two albums just so I can be on the other side from Kevin Keller.

Tim F, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I like Person Pitch (I'm listening to it right now just to remind myself that I liked it) but Alegranza was like this year's perfect summer driving/running record (even though it came out last year) for me.

Alex in SF, Friday, 24 October 2008 22:58 (fifteen years ago) link

I think it's less that I don't like Allegranza (your encapsulation sounds about right Alex) and more than Person Pitch was my second favourite album from last year.

Tim F, Friday, 24 October 2008 23:05 (fifteen years ago) link

These albums don't really remind me of each other that much, but yeah, I like Person Pitch a lot more.

I know, right?, Friday, 24 October 2008 23:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I think each record has a similar vibe, but they are going for a very different effect.

Alex in SF, Friday, 24 October 2008 23:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Okay I've listened to Person Pitch and I still like Alegranza better so yeah apparently I'm soulless.

Alex in SF, Friday, 24 October 2008 23:17 (fifteen years ago) link

so promos of this are out on XL now, I forget what the street date is.

sleeve, Saturday, 25 October 2008 02:43 (fifteen years ago) link

It's out for real. I saw it last week.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 25 October 2008 03:11 (fifteen years ago) link

It came out on the 6th October in the UK at least. Vinyl to follow on Monday (27th).

krakow, Saturday, 25 October 2008 06:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Instore at Rough Trade East in approx. 2 hours time. Might pick up an XL copy while I'm there as my original cd seems to have packed up. Although I might wait for the vinyl instead.

Can't get into Person Pitch at all the way I got into this, although I don't get Animal Collective much either. I try, I really do.

i saw him on fri night and he was great!! hilarious show, looked like a holiday camp cabaret act from the 80s, rinky-dink keyboards and tacky lights and his napoleon dynamite-looking friend goofing around next to him. totally disarming banter between songs too. audience did a conga line. basically, awesome.

wow i just posted a huge disgusted rant about this in the poll thread. makes sense that people compare it to p***a b**r. dude sounds like a drunken tramp and i am disgusted with you all for liking this terrible music and indirectly allowing it into my world

i gotta say it made a lot more sense live than on record - having an audience brought out the carnival vibe a bit better.

Mordy, Thursday, 12 February 2009 10:44 (fifteen years ago) link

i need to listen to it some more really, but i do appreciate its range at the very least.

the lexx of extreme metal (Ioannis), Thursday, 12 February 2009 10:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I keep seeing this in the shops and keep thinking I ought to get it but I don't know about the "drunken tramp pop" thing - as long it's not like hauntology Pogues I guess it's worth checking out.

New album sounds really good on first listen. Shiny rhythmic uptempo dancehall pop, a lot sharper than Alegranza. It's ridiculously cheerful.
